In this video I make a green screen (chroma key) using PVC pipe, plastic party tablecloths, and a 2x4.
First I drilled 1" holes into the 2x4 to act as footings for the 3/4" PVC pipe. I then inserted the 6 foot PVC pipe into the 2x4s and used elbow joints to tie them together with a 4 foot PVC pipe across the top.
I screwed another 4 foot PVC pipe across the footings to keep a consistent width and prevent the pipe kicking out.
I then draped 2 layers of 54x108" party tablecloth over the top bar, creating 4 layers total. This provided enough layers to reduce transparency and produce a solid green.
A few pieces of tape later and the job is complete.

can you cover your process used to get such good keying on your videos
if you want to use specifically pvc, no tape and no wood for support, you can always use the pvc t-joints and create feet for the stand out of more pvc.
Still a great, brief, simple video on how to construct one of these things. Thanks!
Great idea! For static I believe dryer bounce sheets would work. Appreciate all your tips and videos. Very best to you Cheers, Pete
Ok this was 3 years BUT THIS WAS USEFUL. THANK YOU FOR DOING THAT
Brilliant. This is exactly what I was looking for.
awesome! after seeing how much money they were I figured there has to be a way to build one cheaply. I'm going to use PVC to make the stands as well

Sounds good. One suggestion that others have made is to use a fabric material instead of a plastic cloth like I did if you can affordably find some. Real fabric is less reflective and better suited for green screens. See if you can find some on the cheap.
great Idea! very helpful nowadays where I am on a Zoom call half of my day... I sometimes really wanna hide the mess behind me ;) Greetings from Germany By the way: Did anyone else notice the funny artefact with his glasses getting translucent in the end ;D
Thank you for sharing. Great tips!
I know this is an older video, but I think I'm going to use this a reference for making one in 2019! Thanks so much!
This guy is a genius thank you very much for making this video you are very helpful.
Yo, that's so clever! The video was funny at the same time as well.

Excellent DIY; very useful, simple, thrifty, flexible and funny. A little life hack that may be helpful; I keep a dryer sheet in my woolen coat pocket, and lightly run it through my hair when it's statickified.

This hands down is the best Gerald undone video of them all... How does a million$ badonkers cine camera review even matter to a normie Joe n joelina like us all 😁😂.
I wondered if the dollar store table cloths would work...thanks!
This video was very helpful. Since Covid -19, so many meetings are on Zoom and also my family gets together on Zoom calls often. I had purchased the green tablecloths at the dollar store and I am glad that you suggested using 2 because the one did not work well by itself. Also, I have a projection screen from watching home movies years ago and I wondered if you think that I can just tape the tablecloths to that. I am not too handy with a drill but, if necessary, I can learn.
I'm trying this out.
I'm just discovering this now. My Mom actually suggested using green plastic tablecloths... So I guess I'm off to the shops to get some materials to replicate this. Thanks!
Dang you have a good setup you need more subs

Thanks for this! The other day I was looking for a cheap green screen and I think I'm gonna do this! I do a lot of ghetto alternatives to things like this like let's say instead of pvc wood and super glue! Or thumb tack it to the cealing!

Green is not the only option. Red and blue are also used if there are neither of those colours in the video/photos.
I wish you used such great music nowadays. You can't beat Trance :)
Great video and explanation, did you get plastic tight with tape?
Quirky. Amusing. I still don't wanna drill but I can adapt your ideas.
*oooooohhhh yeahhh*
This is literally what I have.
Constantly kick myself for watching stuff like this and just not doing it xD Glad to have found it though dude, you seem a cool and helpful dude! Cheers for the video maaan! :D
Still relevant in September 2023
Recommendation if you don't have a drill and paddle bits: get the T shaped fittings, 3/4" x 3/4" PVC tee and just cut a few more pieces and put that on the bottom, rather than drilling and cutting wood. All can be done with ratcheting PVC cutters, can be found for $5 or so.
cool and funny intro lol

Gerald Undone well so far it kinda works. But that's cause my lighting is horrible. Gonna tackle that and I'm sure it will be fine.
@geraldundone

Yeah, from my experience and research the big difference between good green screen and bad green screen is all in the lighting. Gotta try and make the green as even as possible regarding shadows and bright spots.

Gerald Undone well lighting is def my issue, however I changed it up and went with neon green poster board paper I glued onto a big piece of cardboard. Works good for what it is. Now just get the lighting and I'm golden.
Have an emerald green table cloth for $2.40 and will be using 12 12" white noise cancelling flat foam behind it.
I did mine for around $10 using some wood I had at home.
Now we know where your safe is.

Do you think something from a fabric store would also be viable as a green screen?
@geraldundone
5 жыл бұрын
Totally. Try and get something as far from human skin tone as possible. Fabric is better in many ways because of the way it absorbs light better than the cheap stuff I was using.

I get the idea of keeping it as cheap as possible but you could have bought green screen muslin fabric for that size would have cost $20.00
@geraldundone
6 жыл бұрын
For sure. Or anything else really. You could use it for other purposes with other fabrics of different colours too. The frame is the useful part.

Good idea under 20 pulls out a drill lol
lol wtf bc we all have power tools at the house
I would personally invest in a piece of GREEN FABRIC at Jo'Anns or something than cheapy plastic tablecloth that will tear and get thrown into a Trash Dump...
