How TO Make A Pill Bottle Survival Kit (DIY)

Ойын-сауық

I recently put together a small survival kit using common household items including a pill bottle. The contents of the kit cover many of the uses you may find yourself requiring in a survival situation such as cutting tool, first aid, fire starting, cordage, signaling, navigation and fishing. Hope you enjoy the video, it was fun to make.

I build my own kits, too. Suggestions: roll up a grocery store plastic produce bag to use as a water container; they will hold more than a liter. You can fold and roll them tight enough to secure with a slit drinking straw. Fill it from a stream, add a water tablet, and carry it inside one of your socks for added strength. Shorten your straw of antibiotic gel, you won't need that much. Use the room gained to fill another short straw with Vaseline, and use that to rub into your cotton ball for an improved tinder. Don't use Steri-Strips (or the antibacterial gel) on a puncture wound; only use them on small gashes/cuts. Using them on punctures traps bacteria inside and promotes infection instead of wound drainage. And maintain your tetanus inoculations.

Yeah, the old 35-mm film canisters were GREAT for holding damned near anything! More than 20 years ago, closer to 50, they sold those rolls of 35-mm film in little round metal (steel) canisters. Back then, they weren't rust proof, and they had "pry-off" lids that had sharp edges and you could really cut the crap out of yourself, but they were handy for small parts and tiny anythings!

@@jasonland455 ahahah sorry I speak manly french so sorry if its not a english word I thought it was! Film are the thing you put in those old picture camera before it was electronic. You had to put a film in the camera take all your picture (Normally 24) before you removed it and put it back in the canister. And after that you'll have to bring all your film to a photo shop or a walmart or a drugstore and they had to print the picture on picture paper ahaha. You could do it yourself if you had the chemicals the materiels and what we called a Dark Room.

If you have it, wrap a couple of ranger bands over the Kevlar cord. They do a couple of things: 1) Protects the cord. 2) Adds friction to the outside of the case which helps to prevent it falling out of a pocket. 3) Ranger bands make a very good flame extender. Very helpful if your dealing with marginal or wet tinder.

nice. I use the small bottles for my matches. Since my girl is pregnant, I keep her prenatal vitamins bottles, much bigger and they hold a ton of stuff. I also keep a smaller bottle full of cotton balls impregnated with Vaseline and since the other has the UCO Stormproof matches, those two bottles alone make for a decent fire kit. they also work great for sewing and repair kits, don't have the worry about the needles in those. These bottles are great in conjunction with an Altoids tin.

Actually working on something similar to this myself. I found a small waterproof capsule with carabiner top at Dollar Tree (who actually have lots of cheap survival stuff). It came with earbuds, but I just got it for the case. Your kit really needs a micro light of some kind. Yes, fire gives light, but you can't waste a match every time you need to light up a particular area or signal for help. A few needles and sewing items wouldn't be a bad idea either. And a ferrocerium rod to compliment the storm matches.

I would use a smaller hook size, #8 or 6, a coil pack of 6 or 8 lb test leader and a few small split shot. It is more probable to catch small fish than large in fresh water and this size hook and leader will hold a large fish should one bite - if you don't try to horse it in. The hooks and shot can be carried in the leader package which is usually 2 plastic disks on a center spindle. Carry extra hooks! Use the pill bottle for more important gear such as matches or meds

I like this idea. I'm always over helping my mom at her place about half a mile from home, and I will break a fingernail, get a splinter, or cut myself and I often have to go home to get a magnifying glass, good pair of tweezers and a splinter remover or neosporin. I kinda keep a lot of that stuff in my man-bag, but I frequently don't take it with me that short a distance.

An Altoids tin can also come in handy when wanting to use the tin in emergency situations (e.g., making char cloth/rope; boiling a bit of water; as a candle holder w/ windscreen; and other modified uses). The variety of useful techniques are only limited by knowledge, skills, and one's imagination.

I would glue thr compass on top of the lid. You can use the fishing line as dental floss or pick your teeth with the fidh hooks or safety pin so the flossers are unnecesary. A plastic dog poo bag takes up the space of a soda straw and has many uses including water collection and purification. The water tablets can be individually wrapped in tin foil to save space. I would include a few baby aspirin, too. Instead of that giant knife, I would put a couple of exacto blades (you can use fishing line or filament to tie it to a stick to make a handle) and use the extra space to add a tube of alcohol or acetone (important to getting a fire started in damp conditions) and I would glue the striker for the matches onto the bottom or side of the bottle and include a coil of fine floral wire.

Great idea! For a container you can use a bag from the produce section of most grocery stores. The .youtube channel MeZilch gave me the idea. You can actually roll them up an put them in a larger straw. You can then use the bag and straw to create a drinking device. I would be interested in knowing how you affixed the string around the bottle so it did not roll off.

  • @livingsurvival

Old Fart I have seen those bags too on his channel. I’ve gotten lots of ideas there. To wrap the cordage you double the one end up making a loop at one end (top) then starting from the bottom with the other end wrap around the bottle and the loop until you get back up top. Then put the tag end in the loop and pull from the piece sticking out at the bottom. It secures the tag end and the other end is wrapped.

Not sure I could start a fire with a very small fresnel lens. I’ve tried it with the credit card sized ones and it’s difficult. A convex piece of glass works much better. Great video, Ben. Love this - Is there any way you could get a very thin bag in there for water or a bit of foil?

Don't know if it would fit but they say a condom holds a great deal of water (non-treated of course)

Great idea to glue the mirror in the cap. What glue did you find works best? Put a cover on the fishing hooks please, please 🙏

Some KZread videos on survival kits show the creator building a fire with the contents of the kit. How about a video showing you using your kit to catch a fish.

have you thought about using the tubes that soluble vitamin tablets come in yes they're long but it's a lot more space for things like a sail needle with thread, and the pop off caps on these things have a little pocket full of a dessicated to help keep contents dry personally I use them to store 'civilian' heating blocks in (the disc shaped ones) I'm wondering if the Coglans tablets would fit.
