    Just bought the plans and printed them out! I love that this doesn't use any metal fasteners or hardware and still folds up. Super clean look and no small part choking hazard. My son has started to climb up wobbly bar stools, chair legs, my legs, dog food bowls, basically anything he can get his hands on so this should keep him safe and entertained. Thanks!

I'm making a desk for my wife right now out of some 3/4" Birch pre-finished plywood, do you think that would work as a substitute for poplar on the legs? I think I'll have enough left over. If not, it's never a bad thing to have some extra plywood on hand.

    Plywood is fine! If you have even a 2'x4' piece left over that would be plenty of material. Some people just don't like the look of plywood layers, but that's subjective. Be especially careful not to chip out the veneer when drilling holes and using the jigsaw.

    My old Pikler had 30" dowels (I show it at the very end of the video for comparison). It was probably sturdy enough for a toddler but not for an older child (or multiple children at the same time). But I also used pine dowels which are inherently weaker. You'd probably be ok with hardwood dowels but you should test it out first.

    Hi Peter, Very nice design and great tutorial! I just bought the plans to make one for my 15 month daughter. I’ll use Ash for this project. I saw in the video that the extra piece of wood to make the « head » of the leg is simply glued to the the leg. Have you ever faced mechanical weakness at this junction? Would you recommend using dowel or domino to strengthen the assembly? Thanks for your help and for the plans!

  • @PeterAnglea

    Hi, just bought the plans this looks great. If I want to use slightly wider dowels (wife's preference) will these plans still work? It doesn't seem like it would make a differencebesides of course the material needed for dowels but thought I'd double check before I make a dumb mistake.

  • @PeterAnglea

    @PeterAnglea

    5 ай бұрын

    Hi! Sure, you can use any size dowel you want. The thicker, the stronger it will be. A 1 inch dowel (which I used) is plenty strong to support lots of weight, as I demonstrated, but you can certainly go thicker - it will just be more expensive.

    Hi Peter, there are slight gaps between the inner and outer legs. I love this design and I'm leaning towards it but worried about getting tiny fingers and palms pinched between the legs at the top. Wondering if you've had any issues there? Thanks!

  • @PeterAnglea

    @PeterAnglea

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Jason! No, I’ve never had an issue with that. The gap there is just so that the legs don’t rub too much when opening/closing it. But you could make the gap smaller if you want, based on how long you cut the dowels.

    I clearly didn’t read the instructions well enough and used only 1x4 inch boards (instead of 1x4 and 1x6) so I just added a third piece like you did in this video. I was concerned with how close that U shaped cut was to the join on the 2nd and 3rd board. Have you found that yours has held up well enough and it wasn’t an issue, does the locking pin help with that? Or would I be better off starting over with the correct size?

  • @PeterAnglea

    Great design bought the plans from the store. Want to show my brother in law a better version than he has and the folding is amazing and simple. I am a little scared that all the head of the legs (where you joined two pieces of wood with glue) only has glue to hold it. Would a few dowels strength it? Does it maybe need that? Also am looking to add a slide function to this with a board. Just ply would do? Maybe some added support on the bottom?

  • @PeterAnglea

    @PeterAnglea

    2 жыл бұрын

    In my opinion, the glue is plenty strong. This Pikler Triangle actually holds my weight, as I demonstrated. If the dowels were to break under excessive weight somehow, it would probably be because it was not strong enough along its length, not at the point of connection to the legs. This assumes, of course, that you have a good, tight fit in the dowel holes. As far as a slide goes, yes, you can totally add one to this! In fact, I have recently done this. I used a 4'-long piece of plywood (about 18" wide) with some 1x3 boards fastened to the sides (kind of like guardrails) which have some notches cut out for it to hang on one of the rungs. It worked really well for me.

    I order a set of your plans and are reviewing them now. i know you mentioned making the rungs shorter saved you money by needed only 7 dowels to complete the newer version. did you notice if the new version was any less stable then the older one you built ? i was thinking of making the rungs 30 " and 28", thinking it might make more stable. I'm not an engineer so this is just a WAG. any thoughts

  • @PeterAnglea

    @PeterAnglea

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey, Gregory! The new one with shorter rungs is way stronger than the old one. I think I made 30” rungs on my first one, so you can get a pretty accurate idea of the size difference by looking at my side-by-side comparison at the end. Ultimately I felt a little nervous having older children climb on the old one, but the new one is much sturdier for everyone so that’s what I recommend.

    I've already started making Jeremy Young's version, but the wife isn't keen on the colour of plywood I've got. (It's quite orangey, from the orange-themed B&Q in the UK. They were the only local place selling plywood that cut to length or sell smaller sheets, as I couldn't fit the nicer ones from the other merchants in my car!) So instead of going out and trying to source nicer looking plywood (and buying a battery operated saw to cut it in the carpark), I might make your version, as I can easily fit a few planks in the car (and have done multiple times!). Thing is: I like aspects of this and aspects of your V1. Do you still have the designs for that available so I can combine them myself? (I'm not so keen on the new locking mechanism and the fold, I quite like the old simple one, though I've yet to see either in practice!) Thanks.

  • @PeterAnglea

    Hey, thanks for the comment! Jeremy felt that my V1 design infringed on his intellectual property, so after talking it over with him, I decided not to distribute my other plans anymore, but still leave the video up. I do give most of the measurements needed in that video so you might be able to reconstruct it even without formal plans. That's all I can share, I'm afraid. But I hope your triangle turns out well!

    @@PeterAnglea It's a shame you can't share it, but I can understand why. Other than the width of the dowels, and the inclusion of a new locking mechanism, is there anything dimensionally different between v1 and v2?

  • @PeterAnglea

    @PeterAnglea

    3 жыл бұрын

    Nothing else substantially different. The legs are slightly shorter (by about an inch) to keep them under 36" long so people can buy common board lengths off-the-shelf. If you like the hinge from V1, I *think* you should be able to follow my plans for V2 and just grab the measurements for the V1 hinge off my other video. The distance between the dowels is the same (5") on each version, so in theory it should work. Cheers.
