How to make a nest box

Join Dartmoor Ranger Stuart to find out how to build a nest box for our feathered friends. This step by step guide will show you everything you need to know to make your own nest box including where to site it.
All the measurements are covered in this help sheet which can be downloaded from The Wildlife Trusts here: bit.ly/2N44JmK
Things to note:
- A nest box in essence is a dry home, safe from predators. With a roof, some drainage, and facing in a north-easterly direction away from cats you’re almost there!
- Only use untreated timber, avoiding wood with a green tinge when cut (a sign of pressure treatment). Lengths of untreated larch, Douglas fir or cedar are perfect. But pine or untreated exterior ply will do.
- If you must paint it, use water-based paint on the exterior only, avoiding the entrance. Use light, natural colours to prevent overheating and attracting unwanted attention. Have a go!
