✅ How to Make a Live Edge Wood Bench

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I make a 5ft x 18in red oak wood slab into a garden bench by adding some simple metal rectangular tube legs (3x1.5x16 gauge). I go step by step on how I built it including cutting the metal, welding the legs, painting the legs, sanding and coating the wood as well as assembly and pictures of the finished product.

You should spray some WD 40 on the bit while drilling through the metal. Helps lubricate it and not work so hard Great build and explanation through the entire project.

Valid point to use a lubicant when drilling metal. I prefer cutting fluid. WD40 is not an actual lubricant.

Good video. Thanks for posting. Thoughts on keeping the rough bark on, I've seen live edges with bark removed and with bark on. Thinking in summer with shorts it could be hard on back of legs.

Agreed, bark on is more form over function. Wife said leave it on though so 🤷 I wasnt going to argue..lol.

Hey Nate, is there a specific reason you left the center of the underside unfinished?

There's debate on if you should leave the bottom side unfinished to let it "breathe" or seal it up on all sides. The polyurethane instructions say cover all sides but some "pro" contractors have told me they purposefully leave undersides untreated. I did the border to protect for water drips on the edge.

Nater Tater Interesting! I figured a single untreated section could promote long term warping, but I really don’t know what the effects would be. Trusting real world experience is a good bet though. Looks great BTW!

@@Team_Trash_Dog I'll let you know in a few years how it's going...lol. This was air dried flat and has ~9% moisture so biggest warp risk should be passed now.

I thought the bark would attract insects and mold..
