How to make a Lightsaber ( for Star Wars Day ) | I Like To Make Stuff
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
It's Star Wars Day (May 4) so check out how I made a lightsaber!
I'm a huge Star Wars nerd, and so to "celebrate" May 4th, I buckled down and completed my lightsaber project. This project has been in progress for almost 2 years (on and off) and it was finally time to finish it up. It uses a Teensy microcontroller and a prop shield to play sounds, handle motion detection and drive a LOT of LEDs to create the blade. The lights animate up and down with button presses and the sounds react to on, off and swinging the saber.
My code is available from
github.com/iliketomakestuff/i...
Some other saber projects I recently found:
fredrik.hubbe.net/lightsaber/

I've been seeing lots of comments like "oh, I could do it too if I had an expensive 3d printer". There are other options. Not all 3d printers are expensive, but If you wanted it printed you could use a service like 3dhubs or shapeways or even find a local makerspace. Also, it's basically a tube so you could try pvc pipe as a base, then add details on top. I would challenge you to use what you have to make stuff you want. You can do it!!

The joy on your face when that lit up! Made me so happy that you were happy! I have a hilt that I made last summer which has been just a decoration... until now. This video has for sure inspired me to fit it with all the electronics and make it look great! Probably the only thing I would add would be a quick disconnect between the blade and the hilt that way its easily portable and I can still have it as a decoration without the blade. Overall this was awesome and made my Star Wars day that much better!
My fave moment is the happy laugh when you switch it on when it's finished. Totally cool diy.

I like to make stuff to past I like to make stuff: "I will finish... what you started."
to slim it down, you could use a Lipo cell ( they out put 4.2v at full charge ) instead of the 4AA battery cage. With this you could also use a micro usb port under a panel to charge the cell with a small charge regulator pcb, and it all can be scrapped from usb a recargeable torch.

So, how's the battery life? Reading up specs for a 144LED/m WS2812B strip, I found that it will use 43.2W/meter. That's 8.6A current. That's probably peak current with everything at full brightness, but I suspect 4 x AA NiMH cells are not going to last very long. I'm working on something similar and planning to use a 18650 LiIon cell for power. In my project, I estimate the peak power draw will be about 20W (65 cm long strip / 3.7V supply). Last year I built a prop that had 24 WS2812Bs, an Adafruit Trinket (3.3V) and it was powered using a single 10440. The LED strip is rated for 5V, but will work fine with a slightly lower voltage. The lights were almost never at full power, so battery life was around 10 hours.

its available on aliexpress... just search for 144led strip. You need 144 leds per meter of the strip. if u have a link to the 3d files he used could you please share it..thanks!
Nice job. I like the simplistic design of the electronics and the controls.
I had an involuntary "WOW" escape me when you turned your still dissassembled saber on and off with the sound effects. I'm new to the channel and so far enjoying all your work!
Great video. The hilt in my eyes always is the important part, for it's the part that shows the most character. Not bad for a first attempt ;)
General Grievous would like to learn your Location
As a beginner, so many things to learn. Thank you for sharing this. It is inspiring to see.
i love the key sound u put in to tell u that it was on
I love it the only thing I would like it to have is a rounded end
Awesome! I love the [inner] little boy that jumps out when you turn that thing on! Is heat build-up a problem with wrapping the led strips in foam inside the tube?
May the force be with you
That red, an orange.. and what’s closer to that is Gold (the grey Jedi use em. That looked friggin siiiiick
Could I get the list of materials for the sound Effects?
