How to make a leather workshop apron

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This has been another really fun project. I’ve had an off the shelf apron for about three years and while it has served a purpose, it was never that comfortable. Cheap, thin, leather straps that constantly slipped through the retainer made for an irritating if not uncomfortable wear.
I have long wanted to make my own leather woodworker’s apron. A few years back I spent some time on a welding and blacksmithing course up at West Dean College. In the forge they had these lovely pig skin suede full length aprons and they were fantastic to wear and to work in. Now I didn’t want a full length blacksmiths apron, but I did use the same materials. Design was based entirely on my existing apron with a reduction in the number of pockets as didn’t want to overly complicate things.
Materials were brown pigskin suede with solid brass D-rings and sliders along side brass swivel spring hooks. The apron is entirely hand sewn, which accounts a little for the slightly wavy lines, but is solid, robust, has a certain weight that makes you feel good wearing it and will last me (hopefully) a good 30 years.
With regards to the webbing used in the harness, I am making no statement. The 12 year old in me simply likes the colours. 😊
… and that’s it. It’s taken me 4 days to complete (it is completely hand sewn and there is an awful lot of that), 3 Saturdays and a Sunday. Hope everyone enjoys the video.
Videography, as always, by my very good friend James who was also responsible for all the editing, music, colour balance etc. Check him out here:

Andrew. Thanks. It really is comfortable. A little heavier than the canvass shop bought one, but that's a good thing. Am absolutely NOT wiping glue all over it like the last one, am tucking a cloth in the pocket and using that instead. 😁

A good plan 😂, glue in the old apron and create fantastic objects in the new one. 😊
