I saw a video with a guy who made an easier solution. He cut out 5 pieces of thick leather, and glued them together with wood glue, under pressure. Afterwards he sanded it perfectly round on the actual grinding machine. It turned out very well.

As I watched this video I was wondering if that might work. I didn't know what type of glue would work for leather but I figured there has to be something out there. Didn't even think of wood glue.

How about gluing a leather shoelace onto the wheel?

I know there are hundreds of conditions that would determine the thickness and density of the leather, when it's stretched. I wonder if it would be possible to build a mdf wheel with a slight taper that would allow the leather to have consistent stretch across the surface. I don't know if that makes sense. there are probably too many variables in the way different leathers stretch, to make any kind of standard taper. Anyway, it would seem the grain on the stretched side would be under more stress. I'm curious if or how much the stress created would make the stretched side thinner, and if the grain structure/consistency difference would even be worth considering.

It would be interesting to see the construction of the jig you use with this set up. Thanks for sharing this.

I had a real problem with sharpening, then I built a small platen behind the top wheel of my KMG. I can use 1" belts if i need too(though the compound recurve I made still scares me to sharpen, so i haven't tried that.). I love the idea of how you cut the leather ring and stretched it. I was gonna suggest putting down 1 circle of leather(or maybe even G10), then stretching another piece over that. that way you have a barrier, but you idea looks like it is working great. Maybe 1 day I'll have to try it. Would love to see the update once you build a table. I'm building a disc grinder table right now.... Take it easy...

The much easier way to do your leather wheel is to cut 5 or 6 8-inch circles out of leather and sandwitch them togeter.

The amk 1x30 is the best sharpener I have used by far, figured you already seen it but just thought I would throw that out there.

I've used my 1x10" wheel on my KMG and just a plain 1" belt on the regular platen. I even built a platen behind my top wheel that is adjustable, it makes sharpening real easy.

With the leather strop that is hard to get the stropping paste to stick, get your wife/partners hair dryer or heat gun to warm the leather up first before you add the compount to it will help it to stick to the leather

so i gotta know. razor sharp sells a 2 wheel mdf system, on loaded with carbide, the other, rouge. Is it NECESSARY to have a 3rd wheel made from leather for extra stropping?

Would adding oil to the leather help the compound stick? You oil the Tormek leather wheel before adding compound. Nice system.

There's a knife-sharpener guy in my town who works out of his truck, and he has a leather stropping wheel that's all leather. It's a custom-made, 8 or 9" x 1.5 inch wheel, and I'm wondering if this would be a difficult project for a leather craftsman. what are your thoughts? Thank you!

A really useful video. I hadn't even considered stretching a one piece band around the wheel, so I'll definitely be giving that a go. I think I'll make the leather band first, and machine the wheel size for a snug fit. I am going to try gluing a strip as well though, and if are careful about angles, and grind the finished leather band, I'd have thought you could avoid a noticeable bump. Do you use a converter to generate the three phase? And is three phase needed for the variable speed controller? I just looked, and Bangood does a very affordable 1.5Kw converter - if you don't mind using Chinesium products. Why where you concerned about keeping the stropping wheel the same diameter as the diamond wheel? A smaller wheel equates to lower surface speed of course, and the diameter is not so critical if you are not using a jig or guide. Had you thought about or tried honing directly on MDF? I currently sharpen my wood chisels and plane blades with DMT plates and hone on leather and MDF, and while the leather is definitely better, MDF does do the job. BTW, a great video, but it would be nice if you could take care with your audio levels. I had everything maxed out, and could barely hear you at times. Nice camerawork, so obviously put some effort into your videos, and this is the only one I have seen. Tell you what... I'll subscribe and see if this was a one off. :-)

Your end product is a grand idea but I see your dilemma, I'm a Chef and I use stones to sharpen my knives. I am also a straight razor enthusiast who restores vintage straights and I also shave with them exclusively. That takes "sharpening" to an entirely higher level than knives because the edge I give goes directly on the face....that being said, why not use a pasted strop? I hardly ever use the pastes but I do have 60k and 165k grit pastes that bring my edges so keen they seem to melt into my face, I refuse to use them...anyway. Interesting video..
