    Man, you crush this stuff Alex - I wish I only knew half of what you've forgotten about knife making. I grew up in a household of master auto mechanics so when things broke I never got to fix them. Instead, being the youngest I got a slap to the back of the head followed by the words, "Gimme that!" So that's my story about why I'm mechanically deficient and fascinated by engineering marvels like this video. However, I can fix the crap out of a computer so who's laughing now. Next time they've got malware I should reciprocate the backhander and say, "Gimme that!" Great video man!

  • @scottecooke

    Honestly the more types the better because you will find a use for them eventually. The best ones would be the flat, half round and round. A pack of needle files is also very useful (and cheap). A really long flat one for a file jig and make the dimensions to fit it. Watch aaron gough's file jig video as well as this one for another perspective on it. He uses a 12 inch one.(kzread.info/dash/bejne/pG2dsKaLp9qogbQ.html). Also he has a file video (kzread.info/dash/bejne/noOGlLewirWop9Y.html) and a hacksaw video (kzread.info/dash/bejne/e4xpm86Rfduendo.html). Also if you don't have a sander, rasps are very handy as well to help remove most handle material. Get them in a good brand like nicholson for the 3 main types and the long one.

One is a ca.1911 G&M Barnett 19 inch metal file,boack diamond works before Nicholson bought them out. File was barely used,saved the name on tang to show on knife. Rest some I actually use..More usable files make it to scrap yard. Ones with not much filing texture,I utilize for knives..SALVAGE YARD PEOPLE!!!!

    With the added height you may need to adjust your file angle. With a longer I bolt you could adjust your angle without drilling a different set of holes. You could cover you file in sandpaper or a thin stone to sharpen your knife.

    Could work as a wetstone sanding rig as well and its quite sturdy. Looks very cool nice DIY. If you notice the rod moving too much thru the eye bolt you can place a grommet in there. Might change the angle very slightly but will be smoother with no noise ( use some grease of course)

  • @OUTDOORS55

    @OUTDOORS55

    I used it the other day and it worked great for what it is. Nice even bevels 👍 The grommet is a good idea! Ill see if I can find one that fits. I was wondering if I could modify it to take whetstones. Have some more thinking on that one though lol!

  • @bluej511

    @bluej511

    Maybe jbweld a bracket that fits the stones or something then use this rod just for bevels. If the grommet doesnt fit just fill it in with epoxy or rubber and just drill the whole out. I think it would help quite a bit especially against the metal on metal sound.

    Anyone in the UK know where to get this size eye bolt? I'm assuming it's 1" Inner Diam? B&Q only do 12mm and Screwfix only give the thread size (m6, m8...) and bolt length. Too cold to go outside!

    Any updates to your file bevel jig? Did you add aluminum & a board where the bolts were? Any other modifications? I'm making one now for my first knife. As the Disc sander with table angled exactly how I need it, works Great on the down stroke side but the other side lifts the blade... if it was reversible & variable speed it would be great i think.

    You can also put a wood handle on the file handle just as you would a knife! That would be more comfortable. Cool video, not a bad design! Basically just like clamped sharpening systems. And can you adjust that eye bolt to different heights with the threads? That would be good for different height grinds
