How To Make A Jo (Wooden Staff)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hi juniors and parents!
We're excited to have everyone make your own jo!
IMPORTANT: Juniors please stay away from any of the sharp tools. Assist and help out but please be careful. This video is for parents to help their children make a jo at home. When using a jo after, juniors please be mindful of people and objects around you.
What you'll need:
Broomstick / Wooden Dowel with diameter of 20-24mm
Hand saw or drop saw
Sand paper (fine - 240+ grit)
Natural Wood Finish Oil (eg linseed or orange oil)
Optional: Chisel
Steps:
1) Measuring the length/height of your jo - you want the jo to be around arm pit height.
2) Once you've cut the jo, this next step is optional - chiselling the edges to get a more flat finish and bevelled edge.
3) When sanding the jo, be sure to use light even pressure. If there is any imperfections that cannot be sanded down, you can use cellophane tape around that area so the juniors keep their hands safe when using the jo.
4) We used orange oil to finish the jo in this video. Once dry, your jo is ready to use!
Enjoy! :)
