How to Make a Histogram and Calculate the Bin Width (grades 6-7 math)

As a review of 6th grade statistics concepts, I show how to make a histogram using quiz scores as data. In a histogram, data is grouped into "bins". Before we can do that, we need to calculate the bin width. Simply find the range (maximum - minimum) and divide that by how many bins you'd like to have. A rough guideline for the number of bins is: take the square root of the number of data values you have. In this case, I have 20 data values, and square root of 20 is between 4 and 5, so 4-5 bins is reasonable.
I also discuss the central tendency (using mean) and the variability (using mean absolute deviation) of the data.
The 2nd part of this lesson (where we look at a box-and-whisker plot and more data analysis) is at kzread.info/dash/bejne/dJ-T2ZKepbjAk7A.html
This lesson can be used in 6th grade (when students learn to make histograms) or in 7th grade (for review).

I don’t get where this is said to be for 6 and 7th graders. Really? We didn’t come anywhere near statistics in grade school, junior high or high school.

If you check Common Core Standards for 6th grade math, histograms are included. www.corestandards.org/Math/Content/6/SP/ CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.SP.B.4 Display numerical data in plots on a number line, including dot plots, histograms, and box plots.

@@MathMammoth in other words, when I was in grade school in the mid to late 70’s there was no Common Core and anything related to Algebra or Statistics was pushed to high school and/or college. I’m middle aged now, attending college, and just now taking Algebra and some Statistics, and I simply cannot keep up. Common Core is awesome but we still have a surprisingly large gap of adults who do not have these skills because they were not taught them. I sure hope todays kids are ready to tutor senior citizens on higher math?
