How to make a Great Bushcraft Knife Handle || ModifyFällkniven F1x with Desert Ironwood Handle
Fallkniven F1x has a superb blade for bushcraft, survival and general outdoor.
A great knife... with a terrible handle, at least if you want to use as your main knife for hours everyday.
So I decide to make a new handle for it with one of my favourite handle material for bushcraft knife: desert ironwood. Suddenly it become my favourite bushcraft knife!
Don't get me wrong, I believe that the original design is very clever, and has some clear advantages: the slim handle is great for a tool that you must carry but that may be you'll never use in normal condition. So great choice for a pilot survival knife. If you are in cold climate probably the handle texture, shape and feelings doesn't matter because you are wearing thick gloves...etc...
But in my experience and in my daily use I carry a knife that I use a lot. I don't wear gloves but 3 month per year. From a knife handle I need first of all versatility (allow different grips), confort, feeling, and grip "by shape".
For "grip by shape" I mean an handle with polish surface, something that helps to avoid hot spots and blisters even after hours of use, but that sits secure in the hand thanks to the shape.
The so called "Coke bottle" (somenthing that Bark River Knives use a lot) shape is my favourite choice to achive this "grip by shape" feeling.
In this video you see how I design, I compare and I make this kind of knife handles.

I have the CoS version of the F1x, because of the handle I hate it and so don't use it. I've been considering rehandling it for awhile now and this video has given me the motivation to get on with it. Can't decide between ironwood or micarta though.

Well, I'm very happy you watched this video and you got some motivation!! Well, if you want my opinion I prefer hard wood way more for my kind of applications. Micarta as well as G10 are more sturdy materials but unless you are really into extreme condition environment hard wood is usually durable enough... and has been like this for centuries! I believe anyway that it's matter of personal preference. PS: in my opinion the shape and the finish of the handle are more crucial than the material...

Awesome awesome job. I love it. Just purchased the exact same knife with this in mind. Very inspiring to make my own personal handles. I even picked up the skill to make some checkering in the wood. Your version is so smooth it deserves a nice brown leather sheath as wel.

Omg. I just got my Fallkniven F1X Elmax Tungsten knife and as much I like the handle it would have been times better if it was made out of wood. So the first thought that came to my mind was to swap the handle with wooden one at some point. After watching your video I know I will have to do this :) The result is amazing - youe knife has waaaaay bigger personality now. Thanks very much!

A great video, thank you for that. I'm also thinking about transferring the handle from the Fällkniven TK2 to the F1x. It's such a shame that after the long time the F1x has been out, there are still no 1st & 2nd market handle options offered. But it's like always, if you want it right, you have to do it yourself. :)

Great job you did. The x-series blades are great but the handles are a joke. I wrote Fällkniven and suggested they should offer thicker scales as an option. The were not interested in the idea and quite rudely suggested that I was not the right type of user for their knife and I should propably try some other knives. Well, after their suggestion I have bought about 15 Bark Rivers and zero Fällknivens. After seeing this I will go forward with my earlier plan to replace the original scales on my S1X with something like this. Thank you for the inspiration.

@@servicetreeIT Thanks very much, they're my favourite type of rivet, I want to get some to use on a modified handle. I'm not convinced by the current trend to just glue pins in place with no peening or mechanical fixing.

Sorry, I didn't see your comment.. I agree with you. Many times I notice that people are very concerned about the scales material.. they want something almost unbreakable.. but than, they do not pay so much attention on the way how the scales are ensure to the tang... Glue plus rivet for me is something crucial. The glue is important mostly to avoid dirt going in between and start corrosion or ruin the wood... but the rivet in my opinion are the element that make an handle solid. Thanks to share your opinion!!

Hi! Well, I think that there is a great majority of knife users that simply like enough there handles.. than there are probably fewer perplessità like me that they like the blade (i honeslty love this blade) and they have the skills or the possibilities to rehandle one... But at the end in the community seems to be more this fewer people just because they have a situation to share... As I written in other comments above: I sincerely believe the original handle have some good point, that handle simply doesn't fit my necessity. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!!

Yep, as I write in the description I can see why at Fällkniven they decide to do like so: a slim handle designed to be use mostly with gloves; very slim handle for a knife that a pilot may carry for years without really use it, but when it happens it needs to be there; a care free handle... But for for the use I usually do it's a terrible handle. First the "grip by textures" is not an option if you want to use a tool for hours without gloves. Second it's to slim. Third ... well, it's an opinion, but looks bad. Thanks for watching and to share you opinion here!
