For DIY folks. Make sure the ground slopes away from the building slightly. You dont want storm water runoff going towards home because it can deep down to foundation eventually causing problems. Use a long level to make sure ground is level but sloping away, you don't want dips because then you get puddles once gravel compacts from being walked on.

That’s why you gotta spend the extra money and have someone install a drain pipe around your house if it slopes towards your house.

@@TheHolyMongolEmpire the problem with foundation drain pipes is with time they got holes in them due to tree roots and bush roots. I just installed a French drain on a house that was built in the late 80's and the foundation drain pipe was worthless due to holes.

For diy’ers keep in mind for drainage it’s recommended to be at about 4” or 100mm deep of your gravel. Use cubic feet or cubic meters if you’re on the metric system instead of square ft/m

I live in Queensland Australia so definitely no snow here! But we have had a lot of rain and it is totally fine. I think as long as the path has boxing on each side to hold the gravel in place then it should hold up really well over time.

The area is angled towards the garden. So the water runs down the slope and into the garden bed. I need to make a video to show this. It is really important so that water doesn’t build up and get into the house.

This is great thanks. When you say its cheaper to get the salt and pepper from Bunnings, it works out about 540$ per tonne, when you say it's much the same price as from a landscape place are you meaning by the time you factor in the delivery for the smaller amount?

  • @Diyladytradie

    @Diyladytradie

    Жыл бұрын

Yes absolutely. Also depends on you local landscaper but I found so many are overpriced if not on the supplies, on the delivery fees. It’s not their fault just how the economy is going and they need to stay afloat. Wheres, bunnings can buy products in bulk which reduces their costs. I guess at the end of the day everyone needs to do the maths and decide what is best for them. In this case, the cost was similar but slightly more but the bags were 100 times easier than shovelling and wheelbarrowing so I went with that.

There wasn’t a lot to do in that location to be honest. I was going with the natural shape of the area because that worked with drainage away from the house already. But you have made a good point. I would prep it the same way I did in the video about laying pavers. Use a string line and gradually slope away from the house. I find with gravel not as much prep work is needed as it shapes itself and fills in any dips or holes itself. Way less prep needed compared to paving 😁

  • @ericgrajeda2671

So mow the grass or prepare the dirt and lay down the bags to prevent weeds from growing. I guess weed need oxygen to grow and the bag prevents it with the gravel on top ...

  • @Diyladytradie

Yes. All plants and weeds and grass need sunlight and CO2 to grow so if you smother them they die.

I hear grass and weeds still grow over the black bag or plastic. Nevertheless people recommend to use vinegar, water , salt and dish soap mix in a solution and spray yearly or quarterly on the gravel to prevent anything from growing.

When you already have the border there really nothing else to it?except spread rocks. The time consuming, cost and hard part is making a border and adding fill dirt or digging.so unless you have a perfect set up like this it’s not 200 dollars and it’s definitely not just spreading rocks.

Where the hell are you that bags of gravel are cheaper than getting it delivered by truck? Here in Pennsylvania, a small bag of pea gravel is 5 bucks and gravel like this at Lowe’s is 10 bucks a bag. I got 3 tonnes of pea gravel delivered to my house for 250 bucks this year. If I’d have bought the same amount at Lowe’s per bag it would have cost well over 1.4K. Guess gravel somehow is cheap as hell in Australia…

  • @Diyladytradie

Hi, I explain this in previous comments. When only buying a small amount, delivery was the major expense which made it around the same price. Sure, if I needed 3 tonne then it would be worth paying for it be delivered. But this tiny area delivery cost of less than half a tonne was ridiculous.

Next time I will post a pic of the receipt. 😂 gravel was $144 total and then some weed mats as well. It cost less than $200 all up. And by using bagged gravel it saved a LOT of back breaking work shovelling and wheel borrowing it to an area with difficult access. 😊
