4:00 Gesso is not a barrier! Gesso almost always have absorbent properties and oil over the years can (and probably will) slip through and penetrate the canvas. Gesso's purposes is to provide a color ground and a proper grip for the paint, but it is not a barrier! A barrier is called Acrylic sizing (it is different product from gesso) or historically - rabbit skin glue. The process is called "canvas sizing" - this isolate the canvas from the actual ground!

Can you say why you didn't sand the smooth side of the MDF to get some tooth to apply the gesso? I don't understand. How can the gesso stay put for long time?

Nice video thank you! What about warping from moisture accumulation? e.g. do you protect the other side?

You can still attach larger panels to a frame.

Thank you for your video! I painted a large painting using an MDF woodsheet, very thick, however during summer, the heat caused the board to warp quite a lot, any suggestions to avoid this to happen?

Hi. I know you didn't ask me, but as a fellow artist who likes to paint BIG, panels can be fastened down to any type of wooden frame. The larger the panel, the larger the frame. I will build a frame like I plan to stretch a canvas then fasten a panel on in place of the canvas. The nails may be countersunk then filled before gesso to keep the surface even. Hope that helps.

The cotton seed fibre SCW is composed predominantly of cellulose (~94%), and there is one report that it may also contain lignin at very low levels (0.4-1% of dried weight) This means it is not part of the seed itself, but the nesting around it. Linen does contain lignin, and that is why it was much more durable and preferred by artist as a surface to paint upon. Lignin, is the fibrous material that give a tree its strength, like a web of interconnected threads crosslinked into place.

Need a coat of gac 100 to block oils from substrate? I’ve heard oils can leach through gesso. Also clip some 4 mil. Plastic to table, it lasts forever and drips peel off.

I prefer plywood to MDF. Ply won't leak anything through gesso. Smooth ply is going to cost more though.

In your experience what is the largest size you would go with this 3/16 panel board?

Hello! Don't you need to put white glue first to make the gesso adhere better to the mdf?

Great video quality and you seem like a really nice guy. But the information is bad. He did not seal the panels first and did not seal both sides. These panels are doomed to future failure. .
