How To Make A Freewheel Louder

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Some viewers have asked how to make a freewheel make a louder clicking/ticking noise. I show how to do it by flushing out the lubrication and replacing it with a thinner oil. This will shorten the life of the freewheel and make it wear out faster. Fortunately, the bearings in the freewheel aren't under the same stress as the hub/axle bearings. The bearings in the freewheel only roll while coasting/freewheeling. But the pawls will be slamming down harder, which is where the louder noise comes from. That causes them to wear faster and possibly even break. So it you value a noisy freewheel over longevity, here you go. BTW, I am no way recommending anyone do this. Personally, I would rather lube the freewheel with Phil Tenacious Oil and have it be quieter and long lasting.

    This seems like a solution in search of a problem. Thanks for explaining it so well, I'm not picking on you - I'm just mystified about the love of a noisy freewheel. The noise is the thing I don't like about DT Swiss hubs, and conversely the silence is what I love about my fixie.

    I guess people related the clicking noise with more expensive bicycles. Higher end bikes use more spring tension and more paws in the hubs and that's where the louder clicking noise comes from.

    Good point RJ... and you should stress the logic... @1:40 you mention that the "unlubricated" pawls during coasting are not under stress like other critical bike components are. So, if we're not riding 10K+ miles per year, every year, what's the worst that can happen? Right!? Loud freewheel? Reminds me... when I was a budding Cat IV in the early 80's, I actually loved the classic Regina six-speed freewheels... outta the box, they gave a rather loud and distinctive freewheel noise. Gawd, I love that noise, and it brings back great riding memories. Thanks, RJ, for your great vids. -- bike dork still

    I see a lot of negativity in the comments here which is unfortunate because I know you are just trying to help people out. Worth mentioning there is another reason why an older freewheel might get quieter over time which if left unaddressed will probably wear the freewheel faster. I noticed my freewheel got quieter after about 600 miles of riding and never lubricating it and when I took a look at it closely I saw it had developed some play (which of course made it quieter because there was less contact with the bearings but is obviously not good for the bearings, cones or races) From your video on disassembling a free wheel I learned that using a hammer and a punch to turn the lock ring counter clockwise tightens the whole assembly and after doing this I can immediately see 1)less play and 2) more noise. What that taught me is that a quiet freewheel doesn't always mean it will last longer

    These comments reflect the idiocy of people! Firstly- he has shown what to do upon request. He advises throughout the video what is good and what isn't. Secondly- doing this will NOT cause any issue to the freewheel! All these people freaking out shows nothing more than ignorance over fact. These need very little lubrication in order to function! They are overly greased from the factory (some are - some aren't) The ignorance in our society these days is overwhelming. Just like the saying says- " check three times- cut once" the same should go for people and their idotic mouths. Better to keep it shut and have people presume you're an idiot than open it and confirm for sure...

    Is it normal to have some play in the freewheel (MF-TZ21) and is that to make it shift better or something?

    MF-TZ21: 31 BB top / 35 BB bottom, works better than new now. I put grease on everything and oil on the pawl hinges to keep the ratcheting sound. Also took out one of the smaller shims, had too much lateral play, It seems to shift much smoother now...

    Nope. To get thick lubrication in place in tiny spaces you use a thinner. Petrol is a good one. Use motor oil or gearbox oil and thin it out with petrol in a ratio of, let say, 50/50. Now you have a really runny solution which easily can penetrate all tight spaces. The thought is- the petrol will eveporate and leave the thick oil in place and "Voila!", there you have it.

    how about use small amount of thick grease for the bearings, but degrease the ratchets. You get good bearing life, but get the sound as well.

    Wow. loudness of a freewheel is not a requirement for high quality. If someoone is going to ruin a perforctly good freewheely flushing out the lubricant, why don't they just spend the $$ to buy a freewheel that ratchets louder? The DT Swiss spline models (which are used a lot in mountain biking) come to mind. I have a set of these, they are crazy loud and drive my ride group nuts.

    I have a freehub, not a freewheel and I always liked better to have it as silent as possible. I take the freehub off the wheel, flush it and lube it with a thick oil probably three times a year. Can't even hear it when I'm riding.

    if your replacing your chain every 1200 to 1500 miles due to stretch, you are going to change your freewheel also. Frig it, run it dry. :) btw loud pipes save lives not freewheels.

  • @rrfields65

    The clicking noise is the Paul's { Dog's } riding over the teeth slots - the proper way to service a freewheel is to break it down { Do this over a bed sheet so little ball bearings will not be lost } then place all parts into gas to clean, with a MAGNET remove the the parts when cleaned & pull them off magnet over that same bed sheet. Now after you have reinstalled the Dog's w/ spring ring wire on inside hub - take clear bike grease and apply just enough to the race of the inside hub to get all the ball bearings to stick {** Don't even try to do this to the free wheel race because it will NOT go back into place!!! **} after you reinsert inside hub back into the free wheel hub place flat down on bed sheet surface and apply just enough clear grease to the outside races - put remaining ball bearings in after you squirt just a little 3&1 oil into the crack, followed by shimming rings. Now put some clear grease on the locking race ** Remember that it is tighten to the LEFT ** !!! Now the ball bearings are all re-greased and there is just enough oil on the inside Dog's to keep them from rusting & siege up... { cause when they do the free wheel will really be a "Free Wheel"/ the clicking noise is to let you know that it is working correctly}

    This because of leaf springs,I have Hope Pro 4, which make that click sound,I just use normal grease,I put as much as needed, and around the seal, to prevent water and coming in, and after one a short trip the grease has spread, and the clicking will be back, unless you put too much grease in, which will silence it but might cause slipping,at least that what they say.

    On my road bike, I have 3 sets of wheels. Ultgera 6800 (best - race wheels) that have a loud click. Mavic Aksium Elites that have a loud click and the nasty wheels that came with the bike ( emergency spares now) and they nasty ones are dead silent. But I have a different cassette than the one RJ was showing, as the screw on type are usually for low end wheels or really old ones.

    I love the simple and reliable, almost idiot proof design of Hope pro 4,the spring make the pawls hit teeth. but hte cheap shimano freehubs, got only 3 pawls, and use normal springs instead. www.parktool.com/blog/repair-help/freehub-service#article-section-1 and use loose ball bearings, instead of sealed cartridge bearings. the difference in reliability of shimano hubs and free hubs and the expensive ones is huge.
