The advice is excellent! Roof work has torn my back and body apart and I'm young. 😢 But 90% of calls are these 2 issues, 10% pipe and panel flashing failure.

Excellent video , sounds very sincere and honest which is not something I can generally say about many people in the roofing industry and from my personal experiences, Sadly I’ve been ripped off by a few so called roofers and a friend in the construction industry calls them hit and run merchants..

I find this problem in every industry. My personal friend is a Dentist, and he ripped me off; a surgeon told my wife he would fix her knee, but come to find out, it was a foot problem that caused the knee to hurt. Everyone is in it for money. Roofers are no exception. That is the nature of the beast.

I agree , I will try to continue to be informed and think for myself and do as much research into something as much as I can possibly do.Incidentally my friend was a dentist and one of his all time greatest remedies for oral hygiene was to swirl your mouth out with warm salt water every night, works wonders and kills virtually everything, unfortunately there’s no money in it for our friends in big companies to promote this course of action.

Thanks. All good except... Torch down seams can usually be sealed with a trowel and 1lb propane torch - and no added material. Open seams are always because 1. Original seal wasnt done with enough heat or 2. Top was applied to granulated bottom. So either, 1. Reheat and seal or 2. Heat bottom, scrape off granuals, reheat & seal.

Had 4 roofers come out, I knew I just needed some patch on 10' drip edge lifted. Have 20yr old sbs 100lb. Low slop. I've always painted roof granular with latex white paint, about every 8 yrs, is that a good idea? Thx

That roof needs replaced. The decking is compromised and the roof membrane looked pretty old anyway.

This video couldn’t have come at a better time. I live in Philadelphia and started to have a leak in our kitchen where the AC pipes go through the roof to the compressor unit (compressor unit on the 1st floor roof). We had the AC unit moved off the roof and then had new torch down put on. The new torch down was done because the existing roof wasn’t in good shape and had cracks where the water was getting under the roof and making its way to the hole. Unfortunately, we are still having water get under the roof and it is because the roofer did not seal it against our house properly. We have aluminum siding over brick. Now they’re saying we need all new siding. Should this have been part of putting down the new torch down? Also, I can’t see or feel any metal flashing under the siding so how would anyone even properly put down new torch down without taking the siding off? I’m trying to figure out if I can get under the siding and tar it myself.

Taking aluminum siding off without damaging it is almost impossible. I think your best bet would be to try and remove the bottom panel of the siding, then seal the roof against the brick wall. I think you could remove the screws that holds the siding to the wall. But if it is nails, you will have to pry them out. I suspect that there is either a window or door in that wall above the area of the leak. Water will get in behind the siding at the window sill or above the door drip cap. Just areas you could look to see if you could seal that instead of removing the siding.

I think that’s the point of the video so the owner can save money doing a repair job themselves rather than having to pay a roofer. I believe the title of the video proves the point whether it’s a whole new roof or not.
