    Great demonstration, I made very similar vault. One tip, make sure the holes allow for space of the screw on coupler inside the box. I drilled to close to outer edges so couldn’t lock down with coupler. Ended up using corner brackets on outer part.

    I did it. Works pretty well havent had any problems. Only thing is that the pipe fittings didnt get that snug with the field box and the box is droopy. Thankfully hasnt affected the rods at all. Thinking about securing it with flex seal or something alike.

    Great Idea. I just completed a 4-banger. Works great. One comment for those planning on making one. Just make sure your stripping guide will pass thru the ABS fittings.

    This is a great idea for a DIY. Did you notice the black made the rod holder too hot for the rods? Did dirt or dust enter the box while off road? And would you change anything about the design now that you have used it for a few years?

    Execlent idea! I’m building mine today! I wonder if I used a bigger (50 cal ammo box) I could have 4 holders as the reel may stand vertical.. and I’ll line the tubes with pipe insulation. Thanks for the video!

    Such a rad idea! Thanks. Since I don’t have crossbars on the camper shell I’m wondering about installing the box on the crossbars above the windshield and the tubes pointing to the back except it might be a little harder to get rod and reel out

    Excellent idea Scott, only really works for fly rods/reels though, I'm a float/spinning fisherman myself and we don't have the luxury of the reel seat being at the foot of the rod :(. Although I suppose that it'd be an easy fix to mount a box that has no hinge for the lid and just a couple of those pop latches with an extended length of pipe which slides to accomodate the longer rod handle of spinners and float rods.

    Attempting this now...I can't get my fittings to really since down tight. Any issues with the front bouncing around too much? I'm putting this on a hatchback car with 11.5 ft of pipe. So I wasn't sure if there was a lot of flex.

    Say i’m not clear on the box fittings. You call them couplers, but would like to know what they’re called on their labels. What I’ve found are pipe threaded fittings which yours don’t appear to be. Thanks for the great DIY.

    Scott, this is an awesome design! I have been looking over several videos and this one seems the best for what I want, now I only hope that I can find all the components out here in Japan (ammo case might be tough, but I think I can find something similar). I do have one question for you: Not knowing the balance point of this box, do you think it would work on the roof of my Subaru Impreza or am I getting a bit too ambitious?

    What do you do so that the rods, tips and guides aren't slapping on the pvc on rough roads and bumps - I tried this but had guides snap after two weeks of travel - still trying to figure out how to create some buffer on the interior as you'd find on the professionally built ones. Great ideas here - just trying to mod the rest of the way.

    Genius, some ammo cans come with a detachable lid, so if you have longer handles than a fly rod, you can just put them through

    You didn't seem to have any problem snugging the male/female couplers at the box. Is it because it's ABS? I tried some PVC at Home Depot but they won't close enough due to their thread design. My new nymph rod is being shipped and I'd like to have this ready for it. Thanks.

    @@DrenalinAdventures Finished my rack yesterday. Only problem I ran into was the stripping guide on my 8wt is too big for the 1 1/2 tubes. So, one of my tubes is a 2 incher. Thanks again for all the great info. It will be nice to have my longer rods already rigged when I get to the river. Also won't have to tear them down if I'm changing locations.

    Ok so I bought everything and got my ammo box ready. I cant seem to get the ABS male and female parts to screw in all the way to pinch the box in between. What am i missing here?

    I cut a couple of 5/16" spacers from a 2" abs slip coupler. That way you won't have to screw them all the way down.

    i used ABS fittings. The fittings will not screw tight to the box. About 1/4" space between the flanges of the fittings??? now what??

    The problem with this is it's not very secure compared to the ones that are purpose built. Save your money and buy something this properly designed and tested. . Let's be honest if someone truly wanted your rods it would be very easy to break into this contraption.

    Locks are only meant to keep honest people out. Even if you bought a $1000 rod carrier, if someone wanted in there bad enough, they'd get in

    @@Bradley-sl2uv Sure if you have a cutting torch you can get into just about anything. You'll trash the contents through . Purpose built metal rod boxes can't just be broke in with just your bare hands or a screwdriver.
