What's the secret to shooting an indie documentary? What's the trick to shooting a micro documentary in 4 hours? What are the best dumplings in New York City? Today we met up with documentary filmmaker and fellow co-host Griffin Hammond to find out!
Our Gear: kit.com/IndyMogul
Aside from being a host on Indy Mogul, Griffin Hammond is the director and creator of "Sriracha" (2013), an award-winning documentary about the internationally renowned hot sauce that is available on VOD: amzn.to/2UlM18g (prime video) and apple.co/2G4qqgC (iTunes).
In this episode, we discuss Griffin's experience filming short documentaries about the Hilary Clinton, Bernie Sanders & Donald Trump political campaigns for Bloomberg news during the 2016 Presidential election.
We then put these lessons to action by filming a one day documentary in the heart of New York city's Chinatown. Griffin shows us how to create a story and shoot coverage for unscripted and unplanned documentary filmmaking.
How do you choose a topic to make a documentary? How do you create a story and structure for your film? What are the best dumplings in New York? Tune in and find out!

I love filmmaking channels, but please, if you are reading this, go out and film something. Anything. I am a 4th year theatre and film college student and it surprises me how many other students do not go out in the field. Even if you just interview a family member about a job they had or how they got a job out of college. Literally anything. Make that opportunity for yourself. No one else is going to hold your hand and walk you though it. Mess with lighting them, mess with your camera settings, work on getting b-roll shots. Just please go out and film a little story. Everyone has a story to tell, no matter who they are. Just ask to interview them and work on crafting your story. It'll pay off faster than you think.

Most of my short docs are filmed in one day or two. It's challenging but definitely doable. I usually like to do the interview early in the morning so than it helps me get ideas for the BRoll afterwards. The editing tho, takes much more time than just one day. However, I think shooting in one day is only possible in interview based documentaries. If you want to follow the person and film their struggles, conflicts and overcoming obstacles on their daily lifes, I think it needs much more time. And I definitely agree with "just start shooting". I've picked up a camera for the first time last year, I've been doing docs for 6 months, and they only get better because I keep learning and practicing, as well as researching.

I'd love to see more on this. Tips on shooting documentaries, how to do them well, what to avoid, etc. It's unfortunate things didn't pan out exactly how you would have hoped, but then again, you did set out to think of something to shoot, research it and shoot it in 4 hours, so the odds were stacked against you. That being said, I would love to see a documentary that doesn't overuse slow-motion. Any chance of a "No-Slomo Challenge"? I know it's so pleasing and buttery smooth, but you've gotta admit, it's everywhere, and it's a bit much.
