How to make a DIY live well, baitube, bait tank | Mackerel scad, Goggle eyes, and Ballyhoo

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

In this video I show how to make a DIY live bait tank. I have been using one for over a year now and it is the cheapest way to keep your hard earned live bait healthy. All you have to do is drag it behind your kayak. I use big baits to chase pelagic here in Hawaii, but the same basic bait tube design can be used on all kinds of baits.

Just had an idea for a more aerodynamic nose cone for your setup. I have been struggling with trying to think of a wayto build a bullet shaped nose cone but the solution might have been right in front of my eyes. Cut the top 7 inch or so off of a 3L bottle if you can find them. Run the towing rope through that bottle opening and then to the bait tube as configured. When you're ready to paddle just slide the 3-liter bottle top down over the front of the bait tube. It should stay in place while underway creating less drag...but is still easy to get out of the way to access your bait through the front

You can use 2 ver large swivels both on the kayak side and the tube side it stops tangling very much. Good work.

Thanks for posting this video. I have been using your design fishing from myWaverunner and it is a working exceptionally well so far. I did modify your design just a little bit because of the speeds I will be trolling at by completely closing off the front with a screw-on cap and purposely drilled my half-inch holes at a forward-facing angle so that water would slick by when I'm at speed... Then I melted the holes a little bit to try and smooth them out so I won't cheese grate my bait. I thought if the holes were drilled at a forward trajectory would prevent my bait from getting power washed if I went too fast with them. So far I have packed the tube with as many as five goggle eye and have trolled with the tube as fast is 15 miles per hour for quite a few miles and the goggle I have been just fine. Still waiting to test it out with opelu.

Okay so sea trial completed with good results. Used one live bait which got trashed by our local species of Barracoutta. Will be using stinger hook set up in future. Thanks for posting this video. It really helped. Sadly no one here will sell a small quantity/length of ABS tube so I had to make it using other black tube.

Thank you for posting this! I'm ready to make one and this is the best design that I've seen so far. As far as towing, do you think it would work to use a really short leash and keep it pinned against one side of the yak, our would the drag and bumping be too much?

I also found out that inside of the 4 in PVC screw on cap with the square plug topone of these things fits absolutely snug and perfectly so that you can light up your bait tube from the inside as it floats so you can keep an eye on where it's actually at if needed. I figure if my setup ever gets broken off somehow that will give me one last chance to find it floating in the dark. My white PVC schedule 40 does float just fine though. They are called marcala LED road flares. MARCALA LED Road Flares www.amazon.com/dp/B07KW97KZF/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_58h5EbJ187V7K

Y not just a small 3-4 gallon bucket with an air raider that u can put behind your set between the rocket launcher. I’m sure there’s something u can rig up where u can place a small bucket. Then u don’t have to worry about dragging baits along slowing u down or getting tangled.

That is just how it is this time of year. If you can’t find bait anywhere else look in 60ft. This time last year I might spend 3 hours looking for bait. The bait schools are further out to sea this time of year, the trick is getting to them right at sunrise. It takes a long time to get to know a spot well enough to predict where the bait will be. Often times I will just get a feeling and drop or troll without marking anything and will pick up one. The 30 minutes before sunrise is your best shot to catch a bunch of bait before the bait dies.
