How To Make a DIY Fret Bender.

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video, I need to radius some fretboard wire, so I build a simple fret bending jig for my vice, using nuts, bolts and washers I had in my junk box. My first test didn't give a constant even curve, but with some other washers, and a little tweaking, it works very well.

I like it.A quick look at the price of these is completely ridiculous. Stewmac wants $176.00. Even a cheap one on Amazon is $40. Looks like I have a project this afternoon. Thanks for the video.

Yep, a tool you can't really live without for a refret, but very pricey. Putting on a vice like this makes it very simple. I got the idea from seeing another youtuber make a knurling jig on his vice.

This was perfect with all the measures and even showing the failed first try. Thank you.

Fixing the radius? Well done! Thanks for the idea to do it myself and for showing me how do it. Cheers!

So I was wondering how you would do this on a Les Paul ... Then I realised Fender nuts has another meaning :-) excellent work as ever.

Fantastic. I would like to try and make this. Now I've just got to source the parts.

Try a little Lanotec or candle wax to lube the handle shaft. Might stop the lumpiness. Joe

Hi Rob, great job! I really like it being mounted in a vise, where you can dial in the bend easily. I made one today (sans a vise) and ran into that same issue you had with the fender washer inner diameter needing to be snug. Home depot here is so generic - lol - off to searching the web ->

Nice one. Yeah here in Australia I doubt Bunnings would sell fender washers (AKA panel washers). I bought them from an auto parts store...

Nice wee jig. Could something like this be used for bending steel ski edges?

I'm not really sure. I don't ski. But here's the video that was my inspiration. Perhaps it will help with your idea... kzread.info/dash/bejne/qnxp08uhedGbnKw.html

What radius is it bending to? I want to do a guitar with a 10-inch radius. I've never done it before and am trying to save as much money as I can and get as much info as I can before I decide to go ahead.

You can set it to any radius by adjusting the distance between the vice jaws. I'd recommend buying some radius gauges. You can see mine hanging up behind me in a lot of my videos. They are quite cheap on ebay etc. You'll bend your frets to a slightly smaller radius than the fretboard. Best of luck with your first refret!

@@RobMods Thanks for the quick response! I just realized that your design needs that kind of bench vise, which I don't have. But I have to say, that is a brilliant idea for a bender! On to more diy videos!
