How to Make a Dig Box for Rats!

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

One of my rat's favorite enrichment toys by far is their dig box. So for anyone out there looking for fun enrichment toys for their rats that can be enjoyed both inside and outside the cage, I highly recommend making a dig box!

    Ooh!! NICE! I was just thinking about how I would do a dig tank! :D Thanks for the tips! I'll probably be using a clear plastic bin instead of a shoebox, as I want to see my babies all the time, but DEFINITELY will be using your tips! Thanks!! Your channel has been awesome in learning all sorts of things I can use with my boys! (sadly, I don't think they'll learn tricks the same as your girls would, but I'm happy with that).

    This whole time I was making dig boxes and didn't even know it! I often make what I call texture boxes using tissue paper, fabric scraps, and some other fun textured things. It gets dirty and stinky fast but its fun!

    I've been using the same bedding for my rats digboxes for a while now (they are on fleece so I really wanted to add that element for them) and 9 out of 10 adore it! ^^ They especially love to drag all the bedding out of one box to drag it into another box lol, whatever they want to do I guess.. I have 1 stubborn guy that prefers to dig in a bunch of blankets, so I still provide both options.

    Oh yes. if you want some pet rats, you should get 3rats or more. Rats are very social animals so you should get them a buddy. But two is also not very enough because is one dies, the other rat will be sad and then not eat so the other rat will also die early. So it’s always best to get 3or more rats.

  • @ShadowTheRat

    I change the bedding in the tank whenever I do a full cage cleaning - so every 2 weeks. Even then I usually just take out the top half and mix in new bedding. Since the rats avoid peeing/pooping in it it stays pretty clean so this works out nicely. The bedding in the dig box outside the cage I change every 3 or so months, again they avoid pooping/peeing in it and instead go in their travel cage so its not something I have to change around much. Generally I open it once a week to take out stuff they've stashed inside and that's when I might spot clean it some as well, but for the most part they keep it very clean so it needs little maintenance.

    :( I made a dig box with a bin (translucent) not an aquarium. I sprinkled some food with a few cheerios in it and jiggled the filling so they'd sink a bit. They liked it. In and out regularly. This morning I found the dig box empty. They seemingly spent the night pulling shredded paper filler out of the box. I thought (hoped) a dig box would save my fleece and bottom pan from being destroyed. Next step Bass pan perhaps.

    What tank size tank did you use in your cage?

  • @ShadowTheRat

    @ShadowTheRat

    2 жыл бұрын

    This one is a 20 gallon, but I’ve used between 10 gallons and 25 gallons in the past depending on how the cage was sectioned. I think 20 works best for me in terms of ease of cleaning and not being too bulky while allowing lots of tunneling and burrowing.

    this is an old video, but does anyone know where the tank is from? i have a DCN and my girls are really messy with bedding, since it has a flat pan they push everything out. also, what other beddings will hold in the shape my ratties burrow in? Thanks!

  • @ShadowTheRat

    The tank here is just a regular 20 gallon long which can be found at any pet store. Personally I got mine for $5 used at a garage sale years back, so that’s another option. A similar sized storage bin will work just as well though and be cheaper and easier to move. As for the bedding I recommend you check out my video on bass pans here because they are metal deep pans for the critter nation that work incredibly well - I’ve had mine for over a year and a half now and I wish I started with them back when I got the critter nation (they’re a bit pricey, but should last forever - plus the amount of time I spent trying to find a good solution before them made them more than worth it to me): kzread.info/dash/bejne/dGuWt8RvqafMn9Y.html&app=desktop Bedding wise a good pelleted bedding like yesterday’s news is best for a flat or shallow pan because it’s heavy enough that the rats can’t easily kick it out while it’s also great at odor control and urine absorption (I’ve used it since before I had the metal deep pans and it’s so much less of a mess than wood chips or pure paper bedding). And as for the dig tank I use crinkled paper because it’s the easiest to care for and holds shape, but eco earth bedding is another common dig box filler for many rat owners (it does require more maintenance since it’s soil, plus it can be a bit more messy, but otherwise it’s great stuff and the most common thing used in bioactive rat enclosures).

    I have a question, what if I use colored crinkle paper? Will it harm them? Cause I've thought of doing a cage theme and I thought of crinkle paper as bedding since many colored beddings aren't safe for them, Thanks!

    It shouldn't, I assume its the colored version of this bedding that your talking about in which case I've used it myself in the cage.
