How to Make a Crossbody Bag
Here is a brand new bag pattern and video for the Oriole Bag! This project is available in 2 different sizes, small or large. You can make this bag in the material of your choice (I made one version in cotton fabric and another in cork fabric). The bag comes together quickly in just 23 steps and uses front and back fabrics that creatively form a 3-dimensional bag using darts. The video for this project is 50 minutes long and shows the entire project from start to finish.
Before you begin, download the pattern and templates here: sewsweetness.com/2018/05/vide...
What you'll need for this project:
1/2 yard of exterior fabric
1/2 yard of lining fabric
1/2 yard of foam interfacing (By Annie’s Soft and Stable, Pellon Flex Foam, Bosal In-R-Form, or automotive headliner; if using Flex Foam, it is only 20” wide so please purchase at least 1 yard)
2 yards of 20” wide Pellon SF-101 Shape Flex fusible woven interfacing (or medium-weight fusible)
Twist lock or 1/2” magnetic snap (find them at Emmaline Bags)
Two 1” metal rectangles
1” metal slider
Other supplies that I used during the video:
fabric glue (I used Beacon 3-1 glue; Fabric-Tac would also work great!)
Seam Wacker - tinyurl.com/y8k6qxzl
Fasturn tool - tinyurl.com/ycgudvfz
Precision Turning Tool - tinyurl.com/y8opb59h
Clover Chaco pen - tinyurl.com/ydy4hgb5
Frixion pen - tinyurl.com/yd5dhcu9
Cork fabric - tinyurl.com/y6w7arsy
I made the large version of the bag using Cork Fabric (the color is Candy Red), and the small version of the bag using fabrics from Cotton+Steel (the lining in the large bag is also Cotton+Steel).
I can't wait to see your finished bag! Make sure you post a photo of your project in my Facebook Group - tinyurl.com/y93kpphw

I have made sure to share your comment with Sara as it is so kind and I know will make her day!
The first time I use a pattern I always make a little unnoticeable mistake then the 2nd time is perfect...I love this bag...mine is so cute...I've been sewing over 40 years thanks for the pattern@
Thank you for such clarity with instructions ; I’m trying this ready for my holiday
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I love the shape of this bag!💕
Thank you Sara, I am feeling confident that this will be my first bag! I downloaded the pattern and now I need to hardware shop.
Thanks Sara for such lovely bag videos I am enjoying them very much.Hope to make some of them soon
Lovely, lovely, lovely. From a small pouch to a backpack, they are all beautiful! Thanks for sharing your patterns, videos and sewing tips. I have to confess, I have to fast forward when your sewing seams. Let’s face it, it’s pretty much self explanatory newbie or not. Just a reminder to back stitch start and finish would be enough after the seam is started and you cut away to the next step. Thanks again!
Thank you Sara for this free pattern ...I am sewing one for my granddaughter. Very quick and easy pattern!
This is fantastic! Thank you......so glad I just found you...👍👏😁😃
Thank you for your time to provide very good instruction, very much appreciated!
Sara, You are a very talented lady. I am in awe of the generosity you exhibit by providing all the free video demonstrations and patterns. I've been sewing for over 50 years and have learned a thing or two from you. Thank you. Deb
I’m glad you show us how to put the pattern together because sometimes I don’t know how to do it
Wonderful tutorial - you have a wonderful voice to listen to!!!
Thanks so much for sharing this bag I love it and I’m going to make it! ❤️❤️
Hi, I’m Isabel in Spain. Thank you for your free pattern . You explain very well . I will try to make the bag.
Love your work. Every step is clearly demoed!
Oh my gosh this is so cute and so simple. Very classic bag for dress or casual! Going to make it for my granddaughters as Christmas presents. I might quilt the flap just because.
Wow! Nice bag, thank you for the tutorial 😊 This is my next project!
One of the best sewing videos I’ve seen in a long time. Love the tip on cutting out the dart and marking it.
Everything is super, work, colour of the fabric and of course your idea.
Sara, you are an incredible teacher! I can't wait to make some of your bags. I'm between novice & intermediate sewing but I would never try any of these using just a pattern but your awesome tutorials make me confident that I can and I will. Thank you for sharing your talent! 😉
Thank you Sara for another excellent pattern and video! I love this bag!
I made this bag yesterday. Great instructions, nice pattern. It turned out very well - nice gift for my daughter-in-laws birthday. Thanks for posting.
Love the cork fabric! Fabulous!
Your tutorials are incredibly detailed and perfect for the less experienced sewist. Thank you!
This just crossed my feed. It's such a beautiful bag. Thank you so much for the free pattern and great instructions.
I am very exited to make this bag for some women I love! Thank you for sharing your pattern and showing how to make it. The detail is great and your instructions are very clear!
Sara thanks for another great video. I took a trip to Worthington Ohio to the sewing sTo speak where you got your juki serger and told them it was your mentioning them on your Sunday night videos.
Amazing video. Great tutorial! You give me confidence.
Great instructions, love the way you teach.
Thank you Sara ! You are truly a professional who operates with a big heart 💜! I am a novice sewist , started with face masks in 2020 and got more interested as covid months got longer and longer. I am very interested in making bags , and this tutorial is exceptionally well done , all good tips and instructions! I am certainly going to make one . Thank you for your generosity with pattern and instructions we can print out 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻! I made your card slot ( I got your template ) for my Fanny pack. That was soooo good of you to show me how to do this. Now, my Fanny pack is one of a kind as I modified it to add the things I like . My family and extended family have requested it as birthday gifts for 2022. It feels so good that my skills are improving with help from youtubers like yourself. Please continue to produce your tutorials because you’re an excellent teacher , very detailed , great explanations, very professional. Have a great week and May God bless you abundantly! Greetings from Toronto.
Beautiful work! My hope is to get as good at sewing as you and other sewing Goddesses 💗
This is going t make myself a great project for this winter...thanks for sharing your experience
Thank you Sara for this very detailed tutorial and the free. I am definitely going to try to make this bag and if it turns out I hope to be able to figure out how to send a picture of the completed. I have a couple of ideas for modifications on it. I love watching your Sunday night shows and I get a lot of good tips.
Love love this tutorial I will have to make this bag you make it look so easy thanks for sharing.
Great tutorial ! I love making handbags and this will definitely be my next project. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for this tutorial. You are an awesome teacher!
Another excellent tutorial. Thank you for this free project. So please which reached the target for April. ⭐️
Thank you for sharing your tutorial. I am anxious to make it for my next project.
Happy birtday Danny!!!! Great show !!
Thanks for including us 'Bag Dudes"!
Great job, Sara! Thank-you.
Thank you for this pattern and video. Very generous! Going to try this one soon. After I make my 3rd Tower Crossbody. 😁
Excellent video. I love this bag.
Thank you for such a detailed video and a FREE pattern! I made this bag today. I added a recessed zipper (my first time!) The bag was surprisingly not too complicated to put together. I did appreciate having a semi-industrial machine to go over all the cushy seams, though. I used fusible foam interfacing, and after birthing the bag, it looks very wrinkly :-( I think I will give sew-in interfacing a try next time. Other than that, I love this bag. It is adorable! I learned a lot from making it as well. Thank you, Sara. You're awesome!
💟lichen Dank für das tolle Freebook
Your videos are awesome. I just found you this weekend. I plan to make some of your bags. I sew a lot but mostly do quilts and sometimes bags.
Just finished! Will post pics in the morning!
Love the bag and thank you for sharing :)
Thanks for such a cute bag and video
Excellent tutorial!

This looks so easy! I. Going to make this next.
What a great tutorial, I’m going to make one with ultra suede.
Apesar de não entender o idioma, a bolsa é linda e super bem explicada.
I ❤️ your tutorials......
Thank you for the tutorial Sara...
Very well explained, thank you
VERY GOOD TUTORIAL!!!! THANK YOU:)))
Cute bag!
Wow, beautiful fabric and bag. Great tutorial.
A very blessed birthday Danny🎂🎂. Thanks for the tutorial. I want to learn candy cotton minikin. I am not able to Get the pattern.
thank you for the great video
GREAT video
Thanks for the video! When you did the cork strap did you sew it the same as the fabric one? It almost looks like the cork is just 2 layers on the edges.
Lovely video how do I get the pattern please you are very good at explaining everything for a beginner like me thank you 🙏
I just started on my first Oriole Bag today. I have some beautiful hand dyed fabric that has been gently aging in my stash for about 15 years. I bought the foam interfacing (which is new to me) and started assembly. When I sewed the darts on the main body my machine started skipping stitches. I have a new 90/14 needle but only have coats and clarks regular cotton wrapped poly thread. Are there any adjustments I need to make to thread tension or stitch length ? I have a 2year old Janome that sews everything I've tossed at it so far, but it's not liking the foam too much. Any suggestions?
Thank you Sara!
I’m going to try this. I know I’m late to the party but better late then ever. I want to try the twist closer so wish me luck
Hi Sara, thank you again for another great tutorial, can you give me in inches for your 4mm basting stitch, thank you bunches! 💚
Thank you for this video and pattern. What is the material that you used? I love the print.
Thanks for your tutorial and I love all your videos very much. One question: Is the small one suitable for adults too? U only for kids?
The last strap in the slider before sewing it down, I put it in different where the edge is on the inside of the slider strap, not the outside.
Sarah do you put the shapeflex on the outside fabric before the foam
Wonderful video with great instructions. Thank you. Also for the pattern! One quetion. What kind of sewing machine do you use? Is that a machine that you would recommend to use for bag making? I know sometime one will have a lot of layers (depending on the kind of bag and material).
Sara, what the 4mm stitch length you use equal in inches, thanks so very much! 💚
hii i saw the bag video and it is very nice. thanks for sharing . can u please tell a bit more about the foam used here.. is it available on e bay or where to but it from.? also the main fabric that you have used is it simple cotton or some other cotton.? also is there a course that u offer for beginners.. if yes how can one join it.. please if you could help me with the above queries. thanks !
What was the name of the material you need to reinforce the snap? Peltex?? I couldn’t hear it clearly. Awesome video. I’ll make this on Mother’s Day during my “me time.” Now that I see how detailed and clear your video tutorials are I’ll be purchasing lots on your website!! Thank you for this
Can I use the Heat-n-Bond Ultrahold Interfacing? instead of foam
I just found you and I love your tutorials. I am so impressed by your generosity and the clarity of your tutorials. I love making bags for my Family and Friends for gifts. They get so excited and love personalized bags. I need new patterns. How can I order your patterns? Your bags are beautiful and I think I can make them with your instructions. Thank you.
I was just wondering why you don’t sew the straps to the main fabric?
Because you attach the straps to the flap does this make the flap come open if you carry a lot in your purse? I know it wouldn't come open if using a twist lock but if using a magnetic close I was thinking weight might make the flap come open?
Thank you!
Do you have to use foam in the pattern? Can you just use interfacing if you don’t have foam? I know the foam gives it that nice structure but just wondering.

I've usually had to use whatever I have on hand, mostly pickups from estate sales, and although the foam is nice and fleece is great, I sometimes have had to double up on the amount of interfacing or triple up depending on the heaviness of the interfacing. If you are worried about the multiple layers shifting, you can always quilt them together (the interfacing only) and together with added stiffness of the thread you'll be surprised by its strength and rigidity.
can you use pinking shears for the cornners? Instead of all the triangles snipped out?
Hi Sara thank you for you tutorials, is the large red bag made of cork ?

Thank you for watching! Yes it is.
Thank you 😍👏
hello there Sara, how do u navigate those VERY thick layers?
Can I use fusible 987? Vs. Foam?
Would Picking Scissors do the same effect on any curves that you cut v's into? If not, please explain =) This question can totally be answered by anyone as I am sure Sara has a lot to of comments to respond to.

I have used pinking shears to cut notches around curves and it works very well. Just be careful not to get carried away and cut too close to the seam.
thank you 😊
Hi Sara o was wondering how do you press a bag once it's made i tried but very difficult to do ?
Gostaria se possível, de ter acesso aos moldes, desde já muito obrigado.
Hi, can I put the taps on the side? Like it is in your Kennady bag? :) thx
Awesome
Does this bag have any inside pockets or zippers?
My next project :)
