2:09 This is called "boggling". It is something rats do when they are very very happy and relaxed. It happens because they are grinding their teeth together and the vibrations travel through their jaw and skull and cause their eyes to gently pop up and down. It is harmless, and a little freaky at first if you don't know what you are looking at, but it's similar to a cat purring or a dog wagging its tail. :)

2:18 the water is perfectly distilled water, meaning it has next to no dirt or outside molecules inside, it was placed in the freezer, and since there was nothing to form ice crystals around, it just stayed super-cold water. It was then removed from the freezer in a volatile state, as the water would crystallise if the particles bumped into each other, meaning it would have to be handled with extreme caution. When it was poured, the water particles started to crystallise on the solid surface, then building the solid surface up via the water freezing and creating more layers.

for those wondering, "super-cold" = the water is below it's freezing point without freezing. at risk of anthropomorphizing chemistry, the water "wants" to freeze but it can't because there is nothing for the crystalline structure to build off of. A disturbance as "small" as smacking the water bottler, or scratching the inside can create a nucleation point. Alternatively an existing crystal is a fantastic nucleation point, such as already frozen water, i.e. an ice cube.

0:40 the dog is not happy, the dog is insecure and tries to appease the other person. This can be clearly seen in the “tonguing”, the trembling and the tail wagging (and no, tail wagging does NOT mean happiness). After a few hundred years of domestication, humans should finally be able to understand the dog's body language. So the dog is anything but happy in its kennel, but rather anxious/insecure.

Thanks for the explanation! Some additional cool details - agitation or adding impurities that cause the supercooled water to freeze is referred to as nucleation. That alligator be banging his fist knowing he missed his biggest opportunity 😭
This is one of the very few channels where I enjoy every video you produce. Thank you for sharing the good stuff and putting it together.
2:13 sometimes when water goes under 0ºC but stays stale it does not freeze the reason is its molecules did not arrange to the pattern of frozen water (ice) once you make it move or give it a little 'energy' the molecules have the chance to rearrange and then it forms ice this phenomenon can also happen with beer

i am not 100% sure but thats not whats going on. its a chemical reaction. in fact it actually generates heat in this chemical reaction.
@nou8953
11 күн бұрын
@@theleoshowm3010no, it's just a change of state here, crystals need a "seed" to start formation so still water in a smooth container can remain liquid while sub freezing. Basically, it would take too much initial energy to start forming a crystalline lattice as the liquid form is currently stabilizing the water; a crystal lattice is more stable at those conditions (sub freezing) but to transition it would need to pass through a very slightly less stable state where some is crystalline while the surrounding water still wants to be stabilized as liquid, so without any seed to provide that opportunity it has to remain liquid. Agitation from pouring is more than enough to disrupt that fragile state.
@onlylonelystars9268
11 күн бұрын
@@nou8953 that's a perfect explanation! To add to it, the movement of pouring/colliding with the ice already in the cup is plenty of kinetic energy to overcome the barrier for the phase change. Once crystallized, extra energy is radiated out to the surrounding air as heat. There are lots of cool videos of supercooled ice. :)

When water cools down below -1°C it first needs a trigger to freeze. This means that you can have liquid water below -1°C but as soon as you hit the bottle on the table or let it contact with anything else the water starts freezing. Love your content.
That dog looked absolutely terrified. Shaking from stress and fear.
2:17 The water is below freezing, but becouse its super pure, it had no nucleation sites, which is the origin any ice crystal, no origin, no ice, but when you pour it on ice, that is a perfect nucleation site, and the below freezing water really really wants to turn to ice, so it does that quickly

The 'broken' water is superchilled water. It happens when purified water is below its freezing point temperature wise, but has no impurities to start freezing around. By pouring it out onto ice, it causes it to instantly freeze into soft, slushy ice.

You can also apply that same principle to boiling purified water. If it gets to the temperature that's hot enough to boil, it won't boil until you break the surface tension. It then instantly boils and, in some cases, explodes! In both cases (Freezing and Boiling) what causes the reaction it the sudden excitement of molecules when the water is suddenly in motion. ie: shaking the cold water bottle, pouring the cold water, poking the cup of hot water, adding salt to hot water, etc.

Thanks for the interesting fact. I've seen that phenomena before, but didn't know it was the lack of impurities that caused it.
@DrDeuteron

*supercooled. You can have impurities, they just can’t be macroscopic. I mean a sodium ion is not a nucleation site. It also needs to be in a smooth container, as roughness provides nucleations. At best it can get to minus 40 and remain liquid, which is really cold.

about the 'broken water': pure water can be cooled to down to nearly -20°C without freezing, as long as there is nothing to crystalize around. and the ice starts growing from a seed crystal, in this case the ice cubes in the bottom cup. so if you pour the water slow enough, the freezing can even reach the upper bottle and spread through the water in the bottle, creating a kinda of ice sculpture. alternatively the freezing process can also be started with a mild impact. so if you flick a cup full of super cooled water or punch a bottle full, it will also start freezing.
2:12 The water is in a supercooled state with means its temperature is below the freezing point but it didn't froze. This happens more often in low/demineralized water on a smooth container with low vibration since it will be hard for the water to find a nucleation point to initiate crystallization.

I don't think it specifically needs to be a colder surface. Just something where ice crystals can start forming, such as on other ice crystals, like in the video.
@matthewrayner571

So you're talking about supercooled water here. It lacks a nucleation point (point for the crystal to build around), so when one is provided it all freezes. This could be, but I feel like the whole bottle would flash-freeze as soon as you picked it up, as that's what it does in videos that circle round every time Canada gets sub-zero. Other explanations might be that she is pouring it onto some sort of hydrogel?
@SuperAronGamerMNO
12 күн бұрын
@@Intersepter9 Impacts can cause it to freeze, but the impact is not powerful enough in this case. Ice can definitely work as a nucleation site for more ice to form, and it's also the reason for why even when it's caused by an impact, it slowly spreads throughout the water. The spreading of the ice is because the water that isn't disturbed can only freeze when it is next to other ice crystals.

0:30 sup ladies.
2:13 YES i know why it did that it did that because the water was super cooled so it would have turned into ice if it had a please to form on how to do it what you do is you put clean water in the fraser and then you gently take it out and pour it on a cold serfise
The thing with the water is pretty simple and it's easy to do at home. So, the water's temperature is under 0 degrees Celsius, but it do not froze. Why? Because there is super low mineralization. Because of that, even the temperature is under the zero, there couldn't be made bonds in the structure of the water, so it do not freeze. After shaking the water, the particles swirl in the bottle and since they are now closer to each other, the water begins to freeze. The same happens when you open the bottle slowly without shaking and after you pour it over ice. Because of the ice, the water again forms its bonds and freezes during the pouring. The ice is not solid as the usual ice, but it looks just like the one for a smoothie, which makes it perfect for that kind of stuff :D How to make this? Buy a bottle of water with the lowest possible mineralization. Put it in the freezer for about 3-4 hours. Open the freezer carefully, remove and open the bottle slowly and have fun watering things XDD There are times when this do not happen, it depends on the bottle of water. This experiment can't be repeated with the same bottle of water. I hope that explained to you all this wonderful and fun phenomena. :DDD
0:45 That bicycle wheel transition was smooth. I watched it multiple times to figure out the technique.
Dude, the tire juggling is actually insanely awesome
the water turns to slush because its super cooled. its colder then freezing but doesn't have enough impurities to have a nucleus for freezing. the moment you agitate it (i.e. poring it) the turbulence of it landing causes a nucleation site and causes it to instantly freeze.
@2:15 The water in the bottle is in a liquid state at a temperature below its freezing point. This is known as a supercooled liquid where the liquid is cooled to below its freezing temp at a gradual rate and doesnt solidify because it has little to no impurities to act nucleation sites. When it is poured out of the bottle, the agitation causes it to freeze due to mechanical interaction between water molecules.

It is called supercooled water. The water has beed cooled way below its freezing point, but it has not formed a crystalline structure yet. Giving it something to grow off of can make the whole thing solidify, even hitting it or pouring it like in the clip.
@PersonCuber
11 күн бұрын
@@oliverwatson6634thanks for doing all the typing for me bro, I was prepared to give a whole explanation
The water was cold enough to freeze, it just didn't have the energy to do so, the impact of it hitting the cup was enough to make it freeze.
The water in the cup is probably super-cooled. This can happen with distilled water where the water gets below freezing but it doesn't freeze because there aren't enough impurities in the water for the ice crystals to grow off of when the person pours the water then it hits the inside of the flask, where it can crystallise due to the imperfect surface and all of the ice crystals being agitated enough to crystalize off of each other. the same thing can happen if you get a bottle of super-cooled water and hit it against a surface. On the other hand, it could just be a concentrated solution of vinegar and baking soda. The vinegar and baking soda react to form sodium acetate and CO2 gas and, if done when heated, when the solution cools down to room-temperature it will become super saturated with sodium acetate crystals. at this point, much like the super-cooled water, all you need is an imperfect surface, such as the bottom of a flask, for the hole solution to spontaneously crystallise and become a solid that looks very much like ice.

It's also some pretty amazing camera work. If my back-of-the-envelope calculations are correct, in order for those people to appear so small compared to the Moon, they have to be almost half a mile away from the camera. That's an impressive amount of zoom for such a clear image.
2:18 Sometimes, when a beverage is cooled to or under its freezing temperature, under the right circumstances (usually the absence of physical disturbances and solid particles) it will remain as a liquid until roughly disturbed. It's known as a supercooled liquid. You can do it with soda as well. If you were to hit the bottle on the counter, the shock of the impact would rapidly slushify or entirely freeze the contents. I used to stock sodas at my old pizza job and the cooler was set low enough that I'd occasionally trigger the response if I wasn't careful while restocking it.

At a guess, it’s distilled water that has been chilled to below freezing point, but won’t freeze until it comes into contact with a condensation nucleus or is hit by a shock wave. The cup probably contains ice, so when the super-chilled water hits it, it freezes / solidifies instantly.
