Amazing idea! I'll take this chair to my next camp.
Finally real wood worker with real tools and skill to match! Thx
WOW! I haven't seen that type of measuring device since I was a child, my daddy had one use to love to play w/that
Really great idea! I am going to make a couple for my next camping trip!

Love your channel. I have to make one of the chairs for going fishing.
Great Chair for using with a travel trailer too as you usually have plenty of flat storage space eithe under interior furniture or exterior storage compartments a nice thing about this build is you can still stack other items on top of the disassembled chairs without worrying about damages

Hi Joshua. Nice work. This reminds me of elaborately carved chairs I saw when I was in Malawi. Same design but carved. Those Vikings sure got about. Cheers from Oz.

I have made a couple of these but used a 60 degree mortice and bevelled the bases on both the tennon and the back. Some times they are called Star Gazer chairs but I like Celtic Chairs. Great video, thanks for sharing.

GREAT JOB
Very cool, and I'm going to make one. However, I do plan on tipping over pretty easy since the "rear" leg is so narrow. I may cut an upside down V in the front panel so it sits on a tripod, so to speak.
@BorderRef
Жыл бұрын
Yes it will be lighter weight but the rear leg is way to narrow.
Who the heck did u learn your tool usages from? I learned alot of new ways. Nice chair!
I built mine jigsaw speed square and a 3/8 drill
Thx for the video. I have recently seen this chair in another video. The question I have is how hard is it to get up and down if your knees are not in the best shape? Have you experimented with the location of the mortise to change the height to allow easier access for mobility? Thx
@WoodAndShop
4 жыл бұрын
Hey Gumby! Yes, you could experiment with different angles, which is why I didn't include measurements in the video.

a fine chair! easily justifies the expense of that shop and all the tools...
I don't know, I'd be pushing my limits with this one. Wish there were more details.
Is the tenon kind of small? Would a wider one be stronger?
It reminds long discussions around the fire with friends, when I was doing viking reenactment. As you say, this chair is simple but really comfortable. Nice video as usual :)

The people who originally built these didn't have detailed plans. I've built 5 of these from these plans, and they turned out fine. The plans were drawn to accompany the video, but the measurements aren't critical.
I sealed mine with a bees wax oil olive blend. Its a numeral wood sealer. Won't shut toxic fumes near the fire like regular wood sealers ,polyurethane or paint

I wonder if you can do this from a 1x10 to knock down weight. id like to make a couple for a hunting seat.
@pachnacykwiatuszek
3 жыл бұрын
I've seen them sold 9" wide but all were 1.5-2" thick. Unless you're a featherweight I wouldn't risk it. You don't want to buy all of that material, make it, only to find out on your trip that it snapped.

Welcome aboard!
would you be able to make one with a 127 degrees angle?
@WoodAndShop
4 жыл бұрын
Probably not...I'm not that precise :)
Which is the length of each piece of board?
I've seen this type of Viking chair a lot on KZread, And I ask, wouldn't a notch cut out of each piece and then notches placed together give the same strength as this style ? Because if so, doing 2 cuts at same time with a saw would make this a lot faster made. Then really only a saw (powered or not) and a jigsaw (or chisel) would be needed to make it in about 5 mins (little more if staining).
@WoodAndShop

Hmm, not sure I understand what you're saying Colin. But I'd be interested to hear more.
@markdudley3831
4 жыл бұрын
Colin Crowley ..... we are "notch" catching on here ! Too many notches ... Maybe the chair you mention is a different " style " . 😄
You sure are getting pretty precise for a project that you said didn't need to be precise. Wouldn't it be easier to just drill the four corners of the mortise area and just cut it out with a jigsaw?

This method reduces the strenght of one of the boards by 2/3. Seems to me if you did an identical cut from opposites sides, halfway across both boards yoiu would retain equal strength in both boards.
@WoodAndShop
4 жыл бұрын
Yes, but you would have no place to lay your head, and the wood would cut into your legs.
Add a cushion and a ottoman and I’d have it in house. Lol , looks comfy 😴
Regarding safety I was adding a small office in my church, just stud walls and sheet rock for someone else to fling mud and paint. My pastor happened by and asked why I was using a handsaw. It was a Japanese pull saw and I was using because it kept my tool box light and I like it. I t's quiet. My reply was that it was a safety issue as no one keeps sawing after the teeth hit their fingers. A moment after he had gone I managed to catch a finger with one pull of the saw. At least the cut was fairly clean and I quit cutting as soon as it registered.😒

U need to shorten up for your sweetater so her feet can touch the ground
You should sell these to Minnesota Vikings fans. Their chairs will collapse just like their team has for 54 years in a row.
At 6:21 you said that you always go a hair past the mortice. I would argue that you've gone at least 2 hairs past the mortice. But hey, lets not split hairs, ok? Just sayin'.
Why not just drill 4 holes on the corners and use a jig saw instead of useing a chizel. Your a wood worker with all the tools in your shop. Yep, you have great chizel skills...
