How to make a cocktail smoker - a wood turning project. (Plus announcing a future giveaway!)

I hope you all enjoyed this project. If you’re a fellow wood turner, and want to give this a try, please tag me in your video. I’d love to see the variations, and any potential improvements you make, to the overall design. Either way though, please let me know what you think.
I used white oak because of its history in being used to age whiskey in barrels. Why change what works so perfectly? That said, I am very interested in trying different types of hard woods to create different smoke flavors/profiles. I used ambrosia maple here, but there are so many intriguing options to consider.
I gave this project an A-, but will improve as I make more of these for the holidays. That said, when doing this yourself, please learn from my mistakes with the wood chips. Just lightly dampen the chips so they don’t immediately go up in flames. And more importantly, don’t pack the wood chips in too tightly. That only prevents smoke from going down into the glass. The looser they are the more airflow will get pushed down by the butane torch. In any case, I do love my design…and I would suggest not adding a smoke hole to the very bottom, as that will allow ash to fall into your drink.
After editing this video, I also see that my background should have been darker when I was trying the cocktail smoker out. As you saw when I opened the glass each time, there was a good amount of smoke trapped in the glass. Until I lifted the smoker from the glass, however, the smoke wasn’t as obvious on camera as it was to me seated at the table. Anyhow, what’s most important is that the smoke really did change (and enhance) the flavor of the whiskey I was drinking. That was my first time trying it, and I think it’s pretty obvious that I enjoyed it. 😂
Thanks again for watching. I truly appreciate your support. 🙏
It’s nice to switch things up a bit every now and then, and turn something other than a bowl.
Like I said, once you get me to 500 subs, I will do a giveaway for one of these cocktail smokers. Will make it and ship it (minus the torch and whiskey of course) free of charge anywhere in the world for one of you to enjoy. Cheers 🥃

Thanks for the clear step by step. I’m new to turning and hoping to turn one this week as a Xmas present for my son.

Nice project! I have a smoker I showed on my channel that's a little different style, so good to see other styles for sure! And one can NEVER go wrong with some Basil Hayden's!

That’s the truth! 🥃 Thanks, DD. I’ve been a subscriber for 4 months or so, but will go back and look for that video. Very interested in seeing different designs. My camera angle/etc was bad, so the video didn’t look as good as it was (in terms of smoke). I added a short last night from a better angle that did the trick. The design I tried worked very well, and it collects any loose soot/ashes on the bottom.

Hey John, what a nice idea, and I don't know that bourbon you have there yet, I usually have a Jack Daniels old 7 or what is also very tasty, an Auchentoshan three wood 😋, the funniest thing is that I am also busy this week for something with fire 😅, good luck and on to 500 subscribers 💪

Thank you, Jens. I’ll have to look for that Auchentoshan. I’ve never heard of it but sounds great. I do have plenty of Jack around the house too. 😂 Look forward to seeing what you’re working on. This is the first project I’ve done where I’m doing a batch, so will see how it goes…and how it might change.
