How to make a cheap standing workbench with 2 by 4s when you have very few tools?
I needed a standing workbench because I spend too much time sitting every day, I really wanted a custom workbench made of 2 by 4s and MDF board to keep the cost low.
So how do you make an ergonomic workbench that fits your body?
I explain how I determined all the dimensions such as height, width and depth. So you can build yourself a custom DIY wood workbench ready to tackle any precision job (and be used as a shelving unit at the same time because we all need more storage room).
The finished workbench is 63" wide, 31" deep and 45" high

I used 12 2 by 4s in 8ft length and 2 boards of MDF 3/4in thick.
The Home Depot can cut to your requirements and depending on the mood of the associate you will pay all your cuts or just a few, your mileage may vary…
At the time of purchase I spent exactly $136.97 in raw material
Dimensions of cut lumber:
For the 2x4s:
2 60" for the top side rails
6 26.5" as top frame stretchers
6 44" for legs
4 57" as side rails for shelves
10 16.5” as shelves stretchers
2 49" as diagonal "rigidifiers"
As for the 3/4 inch MDF board, I used:
1 for the bench top in 63" by 31"
2 for the shelves in 57" by 23.5"
