How To Make A Cheap Digital Projector From An Old Laptop

Make a cheap projector using an old laptop and an overhead projector.
To do this project you will need an old laptop or an LCD screen that you don't mind tearing apart. You'll also need an old overhead projector. This is just a basic tutorial, and is only meant to be built upon.

I would put some space between the LCD screen and the surface of the overhead projector for airflow and heat dissipation. If that LCD screen gets too hot, it will be ruined. It might not be a bad idea to add a few fans to get some air moving across that thing, too.

This was a really clever idea, and I think it's gonna be a lot of fun. I don't see many limits for something like this, it's a genuinely fun DIY-media toy!

You can, I just assume he used the laptop because he already had it and it has a computer built in. Also I'd imagine it would be safer because most laptops don't have any high voltage circuitry, while a lot of monitors do. If you do do it with a monitor, I'd only do it with one with an external power brick, as exposed high voltage circuitry is potentially lethal.

I made one of these like 10 years ago. Instead of just taking the screen and laying it out, you can cut the back of the laptop case behind the screen with a dramel and return the screen keeping the laptop in 1 piece. OR what I later did was instead of a laptop I used a car backseat dvd player where the screen folds down. This has AV inputs and a DVD player and can connect any gaming system. Great for entertaining the kids with backyard on a 100 inch screen for movie night with friends.

Here he combines a laptop screen with an such old transparent projector to make a home made video projector. I don't know about you but i think it's pressy awesome to use your wall or ceiling as a screen for 30$. Add a nice sound system and you're good for some bed time cinema. You can easely replace the laptop with a raspbery pi and an LVDS/LCD

I see so many comments crapping on this video. But those people are so small minded. The projector may be "old tech" but the physical aspects of it ie. the mirrors, theories and lenses can be used well into the future. This "old tech" does not have the bottle necks of "new tech". New tech has so many custom and specialized pieces that they rarely can be feasibly upgraded. Mirrors replicate whatever you input, 720p, 1080p, 4k, 6k, 8k, 10k. Your $50 320x480 projector will always be 480p.

3M made a device that worked on top of the Projector back in the late 1980's. I used to use one in presentations for the Life Insurance Company I worked for. The problem was, leaving the device - a "see through" screen - on top of the Projector, caused the screen to get hot, and the image to fade over time. It worked good or about 12 minutes before the screen images denigrated. I suspect the same thing would happen here.

wow! that's the old way of doing it...now and days...you just connect the monitor cables into a projector and you got yourself a projector laptop..easy as pie!

This is a great fast project that keeps 2 items out of the landfill. Great primer video, with clean, clear presentation. Those old overhead projectors made by 3M were of pretty great build quality, so even ones that were heavily abused or neglected still function, and for decades, practically every public school in the US had at least one.

Don't forget to add ventilation. I used a 12 cm fan powered by a 6V wall wart. It spins at half the speed, but doesn't make a lot of noise, and the air current on top of the LCD screen is sufficient.

I took this idea one step further using a 3.5" LCD monitor, lenses and a 30 watt LED, the results were quite impressive for the cost. But to be honest, now you can get a 50 lumens micro projector with SD card and a host of bells and whistles for less then $40 it somewhat defeats the exercise.

You may want to look at synergy. It's a program to use one keyboard and mouse to control several computers. It makes a hack like this very practical.

i did this with a lcd monitor works the same plus the pc is removable and you can play any hd device that uses a screen on it so yea it works for movies, added a light tent to it so it would stop the bulb glare in the center
