At any real larp event though the metal golf club rod would be a no go, has to be a graphite or fiberglass core

Yes that's something I'm aware of. It's just a second option for people who aren't planning on going to larp events.

Great video for quick and easy creation! I definitely prefer the golf club shaft option, as it is obtainable via thrift store finds (golfing store finds if they have throw-aways)

Great video! Really liked how you explain the steps and showing the procedure! I'm a member of a Hungarian Larp group witch started back in 2004. Made some Buffer Swords myself too. They were very similar to these ones you make. One extra choice to share. If you use flat polifoam sheet, and not a tube, that could produce a more sword like blade. But the tube is also a great and universal option too!

Awesome, thanks for the info! I used what I had on hand for this project but if I get around to making another one, I'll definitely try out the flat foam sheets! :)

Hey, great tutorial. I'm about to make this kind of sword myself and would like to ask a question. What dimensions bamboo stick and tube isolation are you using? It's hard to see on a video how thick things are.

the insulation is called pipe insulation and its for pvc pipes

Would the bamboo work well for a spear or greatsword(like a claymore or zweihander) or would it bend way too much or easily break?

bamboo breaks more when used as a cutting weapon core but it doesnt droop as easily as pvc when its long so theres pros and cons

This sword is more of a cheap alternative to a regular larping sword. It's not made for super intense combat. I would suggest using pvc as the core and getting Higher quality foam if you want it to last longer.

Instead of tape, have you tried some rubber flex seal with paint over it?

  • @TristanMaker

Unfortunately, the foam would absorb the flex seal and you would not get a smooth surface. In another video, I made a sword the same way, but I covered it in EVA foam before painting. This could be a good alternative.

Yes, but make sure you have a good thickness of foam over it to keep it safe.

Before fiberglass cores became the norm, PVC was the standard way to make boffer swords. We used to get Schedule 40 (heavier/2handed sword) or Schedule 20 (lighter/1handed sword) 5/8 inch PVC and matching 5/8 inch foam pipe insulation. Cut to length with PVC pipe cutters and tape over the ends to mitigate fraying of the foam at the ends. Then tape up the foam, add open cell foam thrusting tips, tape over those, add grip tape and you're done in less than 1 hour.

Boffer. The word is Boffer, for these. Not buffer.
