I'm building my second sauna with this technique for the benches... let me tell you they look amazing once they are in! It takes the whole sauna up about 2 levels!!

Great video Adam, I'm about to build a sauna myself and was wondering if you put a drain in the floor of your sauna ??

chahuna1976 I did not put a drain in my sauna. It is primarily dry or steamy, but not actually wet. I had read that drains are needed for commercial or large, heavily used saunas that require frequent cleaning and sanitation. This is not really necessary for a smaller and lightly used sauna. I decided that the hassle of installing a drain outweighed the benefits. I put in a slate tiled floor that can handle some moisture if needed. Good luck.

Drain is always a good idea in a sauna room for cleaning purposes.

I'm a Finn, and your bench Hights are wrong. Your bottom bench should be the same height as the top off the stove, and the top bench should be as high as u can get it without hitting your head on the ceiling when sitting. But other than that, it looks good.

Nice vid, dude every sauna need a drain,it dosent matter if Its big or smal sauna.when u throw vater on the (kiuas)ower the Stones,it always runs thru and on the floor. And second you always svet when u are on sauna. Its going to smel bad. Look how Finnish people build saunas. Greetings from Finland,the land with 3miljons saunas.

I have had this sauna for years now with no drain. The stainless steel tray holding the stones does not leak. The amount of water I put on is minimal and steams away quickly. I think commercial or high use saunas should be designed to be hosed down for cleaning. The benches can be easily removed for cleaning.

Here is a quick tour of the sauna I designed and built as well as a step by step video on building a cedar sauna bench. Put some legs on it, and this would also make a great bench for the garden!
