How To Make $5 Billion Selling Non-Existent Trees

Фильм және анимация

They achieved a $5 billion market cap and even got backing from legendary hedge fund manager John Paulson. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a near total fraud and investors lost everything.

That aside, time and time again, never invest in Chinese businesses and ban them all from registering overseas stock markets. It does make sense that a tree farm would buy young trees from another farm. There are many nurseries where the sole business is taking a tree from seedling to a 1 or 2 year old tree. The reason is because that process is very specialized and intensive but also requires much less land than a mature tree farm. Also, a farm that is raising trees for the timber does not need to buy new trees all the often and the turn around time is very long. So they may not want to take the time of raising the tree from a seedling which is expensive and time consuming when then can just buy a tree from a nursery.

    EY operating out of Canada is not an excuse for not getting better quality evidence for the existence of trees. They can fly their staff out to China to inspect the trees, ownership documents, and offices. Maybe the examples I listed here aren't viable for whatever reason or leave room for fraud. However, I'm not in a position where I claim to have provided audit level assurance over the financial statements. The partners or senior managers/managers should have gotten creative as to how they could verify the existence and ownership of the trees. It is simply their incompetence, laziness, and cheapness that resulted in their inability to identify this fraud.

    Good report. There are lots of scams going on in the stock market but most fly under the regulatory radar. "Aggressive accounting", inflated sales, you name it. Even getting audited doesn't really help because the auditors are paid by the company they are auditing so there is an inherent conflict of interest there.

    You are right. The business model and ideology sounds credible when you think about it, but the way it was done without an inventory to start with is what killed the business. If i were the founder, i would have started the business from day one with a considerable large number of logs before buying up hectares for future business investment. I would also draw my attention to waste wood chipings produced in factories all over China which we all know has a good future in the recycling industry. New things can be produced from these...

    I first started investing around 2013 and I remember seeing this company on the TSX under the ticker TRE. Without even looking at numbers, it looked like a fake company. If you start a car company with the ticker CAR, I'm going to assume your company is some kind of scam. The supposed business model of just growing trees is actually not that crazy Western Forest Products is a legitimate company in Canada that does the same thing. It has real profits, pays real dividends, and I did quite well by investing in it.

    Many years ago... early 1980's, walked into the Lower Light hotel with my now late dad, for dinner. On the walls of the bar, there were many posters of chimpanzees dressed in different clothing, doing different things. One poster showed the image of a chimp in a 3 piece suit, sitting behind a desk that had paperwork falling off of it, along with an old style one arm bandit adding machine, with paper printout. The caption that was underneath? "I'm not cooking the books... I call it 'Creative Accounting'!"

    About 2:30 From what you explained so far I disagree they don't provide any value - they provide land to grow tree plus I assume they are the one taking care of the growing. My bigger concern would be the steep growth at 3:20 as I wouldnot expect big margins from such operations (basicly just farm-land renting)

    I don't think you understand the roles of auditors. Carson Block frequently makes the same point that auditors exist to make sure GAAP standards are properly applied, and not to be a bulwark against frauds. Wirecard were also audited by a big four firm (EY) and people were correctly calling it out as a fraud for years on end.

  • @davidjma7226

    @davidjma7226

    Yes. Common sense is not that common amongst the big four accounting firms is it? They seem blinded by the enormous fees charged for what is a statutory requirement! They put their juniors on it with minimal supervision and hide behind the 'going concern' provision if anyone asks any pesky questions. Remember that Evergrande was audited only six months ago......ooops!

    You can't expect western accounting and due diligence standards within the border of China, where western rules doesn't apply and prevalent corrupt government officials means usually only crooked businessman can be competitive. Unfortunely, the ordinary Chinese that got hurt the most. You can see this in the Shanghai Stock index, basically just up and down, each wave of retail investor trying out the stock market only to be wiped out, so the index been going side ways for 30 years.

    I would be say this business model is over value, in same business model like plantation its "profit" is too over value, because when you do this model you need 5-10 years to get profit. Because i am also doing side business like these. Other side there is some regulator, "Tax" will not easy thing to because it need to report every years. We do an analytical predict value to pay Tax,meaning sometime PROFITABLE, sometime TIGhT Margin.
