I was a competitive swimmer as a child, high school and swam All Navy. I had a spinal cord injury in 1990 and have had 3 fusions with hardware. I live in pain and have just turned 59. I was depressed, really overweight and frustrated. We moved to the villages retirement community in FL. They have lap and sports pools and a swim team. I have been back in the water since June. I have dropped a whole size, my blood sugar is great and I feel empowered. I swim 5 to 6 days a week. I used flippers, gloves and have a mixed routine. I am finally getting better. Still live in pain but I am motivated! #bestexcerciseever!

Thank you I didn’t know that! I’ve lost weight swimming but I noticed saggy skin. To be honest I wasn’t trying to lose weight. I sent a video to my mom about my progress in learning to swim. By the 7th video she said YOU look so skinny lol. I said really maybe it’s my black swim suits lol. I actually looked at 1 video on my laptop and one on my phone at the same time and YES I’ve lost weight! Now I got to get my husband to teach me how to lift weights correctly which is boring to me lol.

The problem with the weightlifting suggestion, is that for some folks weightlifting can be dangerous. Very obese folks can be prone to hernias, which can require surgery to repair. Plus many morbid obese folks walk around with hernias. Folks with arthritis issues and heart issues also have to be cautious with this activity. So anyone going to do weightlifting type excercises need to see their doctors first to be sure this activity can be safe to learn for them. Also anyone starting out on weightlifting or resisting machines should receive instruction on proper form and doing sets that will work for them. And which lifts or equipment probably are not going to be safe for them.

I have been watching your videos for more than a year, and they have helped me immensely. Of course, I have lost weight, but I have also gained speed. I’m now competing in the Masters for a club in France. In my age group, I recently won eight French titles and beat two French national records. I want to thank you for all the tips I picked studying your lessons. I only started competing three years ago, so my advice is that it’s never too late to perfect your skills and at the same time dramatically improve your health, which has been my case. Swimming is a great sport!

I only started competing four years ago. I want to add that swimming has helped me mentally as well. After the recent passing of my husband, it gave me moments of peace. I also find my memory has improved. Other sports are great too, but for a person like me who has undergone operations and long medical treatments, this is the best medicine for my body. My Town hall recently made a video about me called "Une nageuse d'exception". You find it on KZread. All the best to you.

I've lost about 45 lbs since September. Since I was swimming before that, I had no idea how much of a difference it made vs. diet until lockdowns. In September I went from a moderate carb diet to a keto diet. The first week of swimming was ROUGH, like moving through corn syrup instead of water. ROUGH. That got better pretty quickly (or the lifeguards stopped filling the pool with corn syrup). Life and weight loss ticked along until lockdown. I stayed on the keto diet and added some daily workouts and walking to replace swimming. Then MSP came out with the dryland training, so I did that almost every day. I didn't gain any weight during lockdown, but didn't really lose any either. Things opened back up on June 1 and I started swimming every day and doing dryland workouts 2-3 times a week. I've lost about 1 pound/week for the past three weeks. So yes, comparing pre lockdown to lockdown to post lockdown, swimming does make a difference in my weight loss. My exercise goal is to do one dryland and one swim workout each day. I'm not there yet! I don't count calories and eat twice a day because I'm just not hungry more often than that.

I'm a new swimmer but have been dancing for years (modern/ballet). Due to leg injuries I decided to learn to swim for the first time at age 48 as a way to stay in shape and not kill my legs. I had four lessons last year and have been going it on my own the last few months. It is slow going and I still find myself exhausted after a 45 minute lap swim (with lots of breaks in there trust me). I actually think I am eating too little as I have dropped several lbs and am now borderline underweight just from adding in swimming to my exercise routine. It's a learning curve figuring out how much food energy I need to sustain myself with swimming and I have actually had to increase caloric intake to maintain energy level and keep from dropping more weight. Also, I can not eat for at least three hours before I swim or I get digestive issues, partly from nerves being a newer swimmer, that interfere with my ability to swim. I love the whole body workout I get with swimming, and the cardiovascular workout without a lot of wear and tear on my joints. I find I am paying more attention to my breathing outside the pool now too lol.

I was a big time recreational swimmer, lakes, open ocean, rivers, pools, wherever. Plus a career in military search rescue training/conditioning in the pool. After I retired I really let myself go for 8 years and gained nearly 80lbs. Just returned to the pool last month (age 50) and surprised/or maybe not so surprised how quickly my conditioning is coming back. Also already seeing a reduction in body fat, though not really losing weight yet due to muscle gain. So yes, swimming is a completely enjoyable, effective, and addicting way to reclaim yourself as long as you control your calorie intake. P.S. Been doing this on my own from experience but starting to think about picking up this app.

I was 288 pounds 3 weeks ago and 2 weeks later I've lost 4 pounds, but I think I've gained muscle. I've cut my calories from 5000 a day to about 2000 and swimming 3 times a week but stepping it up to 4 maybe 5. My aim is to get to 210 pounds, (15 stone). But trust me from experience its not always about your weights, its actually getting off your back side and making an effort, that's it. Mental state and not putting even more weight on, is just, if not more important 👍👍

I have some questions...I tried swimming after several years and I kept taking IN water in my mouth which I NEVER used to do...I am wondering if it might have to do with my weight (I fluctuate 180 to 190) am a type two diabetic and my height is 5"3 and I should probably be 130 in weight for my body frame and I am out of shape) I can still do the breast stroke and back stroke etc...but,for.some darned reason I seem to have forgotten how to do the crawl stroke because now I keep swallowing water! I am 58 amd this has been happening for a long time now. I also went to Hawaii in the past 15 years and was too frightened to use water fins on my feet. I kept trying to stand up and breathe(which you can't do in them) and I kept having panic attacks of not being able to breathe to the point where I had to return the water fins and snorkel. I was really really frightened. This is NOT normal for me. I do have some neuropathy in my ankles...and my lower limbs hurt when I kick the water because of the neuropathy...so am I suffering mentally as well as a physically from my diabetes? Or something more? P.S. I used to swim a LOT. My swimming instructors thought I would make a great lifeguard, when I was much younger..but,I didn't want to be one...mind you and this was years and years before I got diabetes which was in 2006 in my 40's. I am thinking that I must be pretty out of shape by now...(I think anyways).

The canal here is narrower and tends to trap water. I have finally found fantastic earplugs and I use alcohol to release any trapped water, however, at times I still get a painful ear. When this happens I stop swimming and will often lose days perhaps even a week or two. My question is this: What are the best dryland things to do in order to maintain swimming fitness? Great and inspirational video. I love swimming and I miss it. It's my favourite sport and thanks to it I lost weight, over 20kg, had more energy and I felt like meditating during swimming. However, when I go to a swimming pool after some longer break (eg a month) I always feel sick afterwards - I've got temperature, runny nose, headache, I feel weak and like having a flu. That's why I had to give it up:( What's going on? What can I do? I asked a GP about that and he said it might be some sort of allergy but I'm not allergic to chlorine or ozoned water. I'd really appreciate your help/advice.

Glad to hear swimming has helped you! We are definitely not doctors, but you could be trying to do too much after your long break. The general rule is that for every day out of the water, it will take you 1/2 a day to get your feel for the water back. So don't try to hop back in where you were in terms of intensity or distance! Give yourself time to readjust.

Hoping to get rid of cellulite on my legs, fix the fluid retention and just literally change my legs overall (I’m 35.. generally happy with my body just not my legs) (I’ve been working out for a few months and am not seeing any changes in my legs (fat and cellulite etc) (cupping seems to work for fluid retention but that’s about it). My only concern is my shoulders. I really do not want broad shoulders (I like my feminine figure).. would you suggest/recommend I buy a child pool kick board and do laps with the kick board instead of using my arms? (Its a 25m pool), is thinking if I do maybe 3x Laps (using the board each time) of freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke.. Do you think I’ll accomplish my goals that way ? I can't help myself but the calories in calories out model has been debunked. It's insulin resistance and the high carb diet flooding the body with huge amounts of glucose. Ghrelin the hunger hormone and lectin the satiety hormone that control fat storage or fat burning. You're right about swimming and weightloss, though I didn't start losing until I started the LCHF diet added to swimming an hour 3x a week.

My problem is that not breathing for too long creates extreme anxiety for me, so I need something to help me slowly get used to swimming and breathing. I actually used to be on a swim team in middle school, but left before competing because of anxiety. I still love swimming, but I need to go super slow and focus on breathing with proper form. I am now 27 and doing my own thing. Also, my mother taught me to swim at a young age, so swimming is second nature to me. I do stuff in the water and I don't know how I do it! I can do a crocodile roll because of my brother grabbing my feet when I was little... I think I have good form, but I can probably improve it.

Lost 4 kg in 1 month, swimming 2 days and on the third day running 6-10 K because of knee problems. Had 5 parties in the weekends, ate loads, on mat leave n breastffeding so cnnot cut down the calories right down. 4 kg is not a lot but I suppose swimming has increased my overall wellbeing. My leisure centre takes £27 a month direct debit, it is a lot of money in this inflation but I look it as an investment to my health and well being for the sake of myself, my career, my children n family.
