Near infrared light seems to have an regenerative effect on the skin. Also, infrared light seems to be needed to boost melatonin production in the mitochondria, leading to an increased antioxidant capacity. Alpha ketoglutarate seems to increase procollagen production. Glycine is to be the rate limiting amino acid in collagen synthesis with more needed than even a high protein diet can provide. Specific hydrolized collagen products such as verisol (skin) and fortigel (cartilage) claim to work in part by acting as signalling molecules to increase collagen production. For fortigel, we also have at least one mri study showing actual thickening of cartilage in the knee. Microneedling seems to be more effective than laser therapy to induce collagen production in the skin and even has some lifting effect. It also seems to reverse visible photoaging. Oral Astaxanthin and tocotrienol can have a protective effect in regard to photoaging.

A great video again, thank you Brad. Btw a thing that imo is overlooked when it comes to aging of the human body is the stress hormone cortisol. Apparently with too much stress you cause increased oxidation in your body and your cells get damaged. I looked around the internet for a bit and saw that meditation and breathing techniques, when done regularly, can decrease the average amount of cortisol in your brain. I think this is a thing that is greatly overlooked, not even Sinclair has been talking about this.

Most people think the integrated stress response causes damage based on viral infection or aging, but stress hormones dysregulate it was well. Overactivated integrated stress response compromises protein production, waste management, and repair throughout the entire body. ISR>GAS6>Claudin-5 = hair loss, and compromised blood brain barrier in vasculature based dementias. That is just two of the issues IRS drives, out of hundreds. Albumin production decline, skin issues, etc.

This overview was actually exactly what I was looking for. And... actually I'm quite happy to see how you increase the health of not only a few people, but as many people as you can :) For the future, do you think you could also create some review videos where you could compare the effect sizes to some extent? As for example, I can imagine that comparisons between retinoid applications and collagen intake could be quite feasible. So that people can always handily prioritize, which health behavior should be maintained as much as possible in busy daily life. That said, many thanks already in advance, and thank you for the continuous quality and sincerity that you put in really each video. Please know that people do see it; and we appreciate it

Great video and summary :D I take lower dose collagen (taking high dose in pre-menopausal females long term can sometimes almost stop menstruation happening and interfere with it), hyaluronic acid +vit B3 with Zn creams or facial serum. Creams with retinol are also great or AHAs/glycolic acid. People also swear by Vit C + ferulic acid (or at least an acid that lowers the pH to allow Vit C absorption into the skin) .The thing that has had the most impact on me is time restricted feeding (I do 20/4 to OMAD) +/- longer intermittent fasting eg 48h - you will see an amazing "face lift" with removal of wrinkles, acne, skin issues over several months without pills/creams /cosmetic procedures (so long as you aren't too wrinkly in the first place). As you have stated prevention is better than cure

When it comes to skin health, I think it would be useful to discuss how exogenous and endogenous AGEs and are formed - (eg. burnt foods and blood sugar spikes respectively). And how sunlight damages the skin in the presence of AGEs. Lastly, it could be useful to discuss natural compounds (like leutolin found in great quantity in radicchio) can clear AGEs.

That's interesting. I heard someone talk once about how the skin burned worse under UV for people who had followed a diet overly high in vegetable oils (omega 6 or polyunsaturated fats being the culprit or something) - is that separate from the research you're referring to about AGEs? i.e. Your reference has nothing to do with that one? Also, some other recent paper where sunscreen chemicals applied to the skin would react under UV to create new molecules that damaged the skin 😎

  • @arentjack4224

@@TheBroSplit retinol is not the same as tretinoin. Tretinoin is retinoic acid & retinol has to be converted in two steps into retinoic acid. Retinol is available over the counter and tretinoin is prescription only medication. Tretinoin is 100 times more effective than tretinoin. You can also opt to use adapalene which is a third generation retinoid which is available over the counter in some countries like the US. Adapalene has to be converted into retinoic acid as well but only in one step and is much more potent than retinol. But if you can get your hands on tretinoin I highly recommend using this. Check out Dr. Dray’s youtube channel for more information on this subject.

Because I felt a little pain on my knees and fingers sometimes. I started to go out between 1 pm and 4 pm without sunscreen on my body. Though still protecting my face with sunscreen, a mask or a hat. After one year of doing that, I feel much better with my knees and fingers pain now. Almost gone and now feeling like normal. Other benefits of the sun include charges cell mitochondria, improves circadian rhythm, improves sleep, and improves all factors of health by improving sleep quality, improve mood, and decreases stress. Vit D supplement is good but doesn't have all of these benefits.

Pasture raised meat/fat and wild fish contain the most important nutrients for skin health in the highest concentration talked about in this video and comment above (retinols, B vitamins/niacinamide, collagen, hyaluronic acid, omega-3 FA). For most people, they experience aging of their skin through fat loss under their skin; getting enough meat, fat/oil, salt and minerals, and exercise is the best way to prevent this. The plant-based trend is the biggest fad diet out of the 20th century. It has helped people take a break from highly processed, but it will fill your body with too much omega 6 FAs, overtax your liver and kidneys, increase your insulin resistance, and deprive you of the nutrients that literally keeps your skin together and produce energy efficiently. Going plant-based too long will age and wither you.

A great video. I appreciate Dr. Stanfield giving advice on how to keep our skin healthy (and I would also love a video about how to get good sleep). I do have a few notes, however. There are other issues with sunscreen, the price, the environmental impact of even mineral sunscreens (we need something that is completely proven to be safe for the ecosystem), the discomfort on the skin (especially for people with sensory issues, like me, I am diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, ADHD, and GAD, and find sunscreen very uncomfortable unless I am using the smallest amounts which would no longer be an effective amount), the constant reapplication (especially on non-facial skin that is exposed), the risk of mineral sunscreens oxidizing, and so on... I used to take a cheap hyaluronic supplement before I realized I needed a high molecular weight, but the high molecular weight options are too expensive for me. As for botox, I am uncomfortable with the idea of injecting a neurotoxin into my skin for the purpose of paralyzing my muscles. I also want to be able to care for my skin at home and not have to go to a professional which takes time and money and may be uncomfortable.

@Slavery is Freedom, War is Peace Well some things can. The way finasteride works is by reducing and inhibiting the conversion of free testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is a much stronger form of testosterone and is both responsible for the hair follicles on our bodies getting the signal to grow more hair as well as the hormone that shrinks hair follicles on the head over time leading to male patterned baldness or hair loss. Finasteride is commonly taken to both reverse and slow head hair loss and reduce body hair. Unfortunately it has some side effects that reduce libido and lead to sexual dysfunction. Finasteride is also taken to shrink the prostate and prevent prostate cancer. It is being studies for other longevity, rejuvenation, and anti-aging effects.
