Two-faced putty
Adjustable jigs
Steps:
1. On base cabinets with drawers, keep pulls on lower drawers slightly higher than center. They’ll appear centered when viewed from above.
2. To visually check the location of a knob without making holes, use two-faced putty.
3. Use a combination square to measure the center location and transfer that measurement to other cabinets.
4. Use scrap wood to create a jig to ensure consistent placement of hardware.
5. A basic plastic jig can be used for marking with several offsets located.
6. An adjustable jig can ensure consistent placement and acts as a drill guide.
7. Another adjustable jig offers spacing for both pulls and knobs on door and drawer front cabinets.

Every young man should be made to watch this show.
Always the best quality instructional videos! Thank you
love this channel thanks for all the videos
There actually is a very easy way to determine handle or knob placement on your doors. It's all based on the height of your top drawer. If your top drawer is 5 inches tall, you center the hardware at 2-1/2" inches. So now you know that the rest of your hardware will be started at 2-1/2" up or down on your doors. This way, if you have a bank of drawers next to a door, your top handles or knobs will all be on the same level. To make it clearer, if you have a 3 drawer base cabinet next to a 2 door base cabinet, your top drawer handle and the handles on the doors will be on the same plane.

This is how I do it as well!
Very constructive, informative.
Have been so needing this forever!
if using a store bought jig I put tape over the holes I am not using to ensure I don't mistake them for my intended holes
In my mind, I had that exact (well, something pretty darn close) DIY jig in mind. I have plent of scrap wood to do it with and 17 knobs to install.
Love this dudes accent
Good video from Brownsville Texas

Draw
Tom sound so patient and relevant
What size drill bit should I use for most standard cabinet/draw pull screws/bolts?
on those drawer pulls... yes it might look off. however if you have a flush style pull... centered is better.
But when you have a handle that needs two holes, how do you get the proper holes on the jig he made? How do you know exactly where to drill them?

Jefferrey1 The Kreg jig is perfect for that. I used it for my diy bathroom vanity I built a few months ago. Perfect for 2-hole pulls and setting the right distance between them.

You measure them onto your jig, and then drill them out.

Shoot, I just took 2 pieces of wood made an L and place it where I want the hole :) 1 5/16 away from bottom and top and all will be the same distance and height .
Instructions for making that homemade jig anyone?
Can we get the product information on the jigs Tom uses?

The one that he uses is True Position Tools TP-1934 Hardware Jig

The jig he uses would only be necessary if you were doing this professionally. It's close to $190. If you're putting pulls on 20 or so cabinets in your kitchen, pick up that plastic jig he showed - $9 at your orange box store, then use an Awl to mark your holes. Don't have an awl? Use a dart, ice pick, nail, pencil, welding tip, or anything else pointy... $9 rather than $190.

@@poetnk Um, don't know where you shop at it but Amazon sells it for $17.99 not the $190 you quoted. Search for "Cabinet Hardware Jig/Punch Locator Drill Guide Template Wood Drilling Dowelling for Installation of Handles, Knobs on Doors and Drawer Pull with Center Punch Cabinet Knobs Tool"
Make sure you’re cabinet doors are all level before you start drilling.
Nobody making a jig for door knobs... Let's dummy it down a bit for us common folks 😭🤣

I would much rather the pulls BE centered than LOOK centered

That's true. If I moved into a house and saw the pulls off-center by half an inch, I'd just figure the previous homeowner had no clue what they were doing - SURPRISE it was Tom Silva!

This is really nice but if you just need to drill one hole here and there I don't think it worth to buy the jig or to prepare one....
@JeffOstroff1

Moran Guy it is definitely worth it to buy even a little plastic templates that they sell at Home Depot and Lowe's because they're only like $4 and they work pretty well but if you're going to do a lot of cabinets definitely the way to go is like that Kreg Jig that he showed or even the one that he claims he used because you can get an infinite number of settings where is if you buy the templates from Home Depot they only have three or four rows of holes and if your knob placement doesn't fit in one of those holes then you're screwed you have to choose one of the holes on the template.

I think it's such a waste to have a workshop in such a beautiful building! You're so lucky to have this but please convert it back to a living accommodation! I can imagine how breathtakingly stunning this place could be! Thank you for your very useful video!
Lee Valley sells Bushing so when you make your own jig you don't end up drill out the hole toomuch and have your bit start drilling at an angle. www.leevalley.com/en-ca/shop/hardware/jig-and-fixture-parts/40089-drill-guide-bushings also the insert www.leevalley.com/en-ca/shop/hardware/jig-and-fixture-parts/101378-drill-guide-insert It makes the template last through the job.
This is great if you have a billion tools...
@richardlug6139

No you really just need a drill, something to measure with, and a pencil. If you want to get fancy you could make or buy a jig. Not many tools at all!
