How to locate an internal toilet leak

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

www.VideoJoeKnows.com How to locate an internal toilet leak.....what do I mean? Water could be leaking internally, from the toilet tank to the toilet bowl, yet you won't see any visible water on the exterior of the toilet but the toilet keeps filling up with water, every 5 minutes or so. This could mean you do in fact have a water leak....a water leak from the toilet tank then leaking down into the toilet bowl. That's what I'm referring to when calling it an internal toilet leak. How to locate an internal toilet leak, is an important step to then be able to figure out which repair is needed. You mean there's more than 1 way to have an internal leak to a toilet? How's that? I'll have "joe" explain that one to you!

    Solution two concerning the little black tube was the fix. The bathroom was recently repainted and I suspect that the painter may have accidentally pushed the tube down when he had the tank lid off. The toilet started running every 20 minutes even after I replaced the flapper. I was just about to replace the tank gasket when I looked at this video and found the 30 second fix that saved the day. Thanks! Tom

    God bless you! Your tip on the fill tube siphoning water as one of the causes to leakage RESOLVED my issue. The last plumber I paid to replace my defective flush valve left the fill tube sitting inside the verticle tube, so the leak has been going on for months since. So I pulled it out and have it rested correctly on the white support that is on the verticle tube. The leak stopped immediately. That is why the fill tube must be rested on top of the verticle tube not rested inside it. You are an excellent instructor to mention that culprit. Thanks.

    Bam! That's it. I replaced the flapper and it was still leaking. Then I watched your video and you mentioned that the filler tube can be too far down and siphon water into the tube. This caused me to remember that I had pushed the tube down farther so that it didn't come out. As soon as I saw that part in your video, I said to myself, "That's it!" Thank you for your video.

    Thank you for the video. I have no experience with plumbing and after replacing the overflow pipe, I was at my wits end at why the tank was still leaking. I found your video and after listening to your three diagnoses, I figured out the issue. 1. It's a new flapper and it's not the source. 2. Replaced the overflow pipe with a new gasket 3. Stupid water fill tube was several inches deep inside the overflow pipe and it was siphoning water into the bowl. Thank you again. Problem solved.

    Thanks for the tip Joe Our one year old toilet had tank water trickling into the bowl. After changing the flapper (no dice) then removing the tank and sealing the gaskets with caulking ( nope) I shines a light down the overflow pipe and could see the little hose dripping down into the bowl----It was siphoning. I had pushed it too far down into the overflow stand pipe.. The easiest fix is sometimes the one we overlook....Thanks for the video.

    #2 got me. My tube was only about 1/4" down the pipe, but the tank water level was about 1/4" below the top of the pipe as well. I adjusted the water level down another half inch and then made sure the edge of the tube was resting on the top of the pipe. I have one of those s-clips so I can't really go higher than that without it spraying into the tank. I replaced the flap first and I was sure that was going to fix it because the flap had started to decompose and leave residue around the area where the flap makes a seal. That flap was going to be a problem soon, so it wasn't a waste of money.

    I would not recommend cutting the hose a little shorter & just leaving it, as it could start flying around when it fills with water. You could fashion a little "S" hook out of a paperclip & do it that way. I've done that before & it works good, if you get the "S" right. Or you can go to the hardware store & purchase just that part. Thanks for commenting. Joe :0

    I think the number one problem is that fill valve diaphragm is leaking filling the tank and dumping it on overflow tube. So you have to flush it, clean the diaphragm every two years, check water height every 2 months, if water on overflow rim, flush/clean the diaphragm or replace if cracked, advise from apartment owner. Second is flapper, clean algae, replace if stiff/deform, fill tube hose is not a problem even if you put them below water line.

    Yes there are always lots of ways a toilet can be leaking & not all toilets will be leaking at the very same place. What did you end up finding?

  • @a1930ford
    @a1930ford8 жыл бұрын

    4th possibility is that previous installer of tank cracked the tank by over tightening the bowl bolts that have the rubber washers holding the tank in place. You may or may not see the crack, but when sitting down on the bowl it can rock the tank just enough to create a leak there. Also, you may find small chips inside the tank that give it away as a clue. Get down and watch as you flush the toilet and sometimes you can even see the water leaking from the bolt area of the tank.The siphon tube was something I was not familiar with. Unfortunately, it was cheaper for me to replace the entire toilet than to just replace the tank in my old Crane toilet. That particular style was no longer manufactured and the comfort, low flush toilet was a good replacement to do at this time, anyway. In fact, I'll be doing just that in a few more hours.Thanks for posting the info. Unless I missed it though, you didn't follow up to say if your leak was resolved or not and if it was indeed the gasket or not.

    Another place to leak is a hairline crack in the overflow tube and also it can leak pass through deteriorated washers under the tank bolts inside the tank.

  • @VideoJoeKnows

    @VideoJoeKnows

    onemon22 Did you put the rubber washers on properly for the two long brass screws that hold the tank to the toilet bowl? Are you seeing the water dripping from there? You might have to tighten those bolts up a little bit more but not too much or you could crack the toilet tank or the toilet bowl ledge. Look carefully & see where the leak is coming from before trying to tighten the wrong screws that are not leaking. I hate working on toilets. Don't give up on it though. I'm pretty sure you'll be able to stop that leak! Let me know how you do.......

    @Mrsprstewart Did you replace the water fill valve with the kind I show here? You should be able to adjust the float so you will have less water in the tank. The water should be an inch lower than the overflow pipe. How high is your water in the tank? Sounds like your float needs to be adjusted. Joe :0

    Thanks for noticing the clean toilet tank! Yours can be like that too. Just turn the water off at the wall gate valve then flush the toilet. Now you're ready to sponge the rest of the water out. You can wear gloves if you need to!.....eeeeww! Now you can wipe up the bottom & sides, spray some disenfectant in there even, & presto!....good as new. That's "joe" for you.....always trying to help you out! :0

    Joe, should the mouth of the hose that clips on the overflow tube be clipped to the inside of the tube or the outside? Since this is overflow, where does the water that flows into the tube go? thansk!

    The tube usually gets clipped so it goes to the inside of the drain but I have seen them on the outside as well. This water just goes & fills up the toilet tank after you flush that's all. Great that you're trying to learn to save money around the house! Way to go! Joe :0

    Sounds like your gasket under the flapper is bad, & is draining the water very slowly out of the toilet tank, & running into the bowl. Most people call it a doughnut since that's what it looks like. This is the big black round gasket that is between the tank & the bowl. I think that's where it leaking, since your tank is dry. How old is your toilet? Are the bolts loose at this gasket? (probably not). Your gasket is clean wore out sounds like. They can be replaced though. Joe :0

    Hi Joe, by any chance that you know how to fix the leaking from the upstair toilet down to the basement? only leak when somebody flush the toilet upstair. last time it happened once. i got some plumber to help and it only took him like 5 minutes. this time it happen again, but i want to try to fix it myself first (too expensive to call a plumber :)) thanks Joe

  • @VideoJoeKnows

    Well it sounds like the toilet wax wing is leaking so everytime you flush the toilet some of the water leaks out from under the toilet then eventually will soak up your floor area on the 2nd floor enough to then start trickling down to the first floor ceiling or adjoining wall when you flush up there. That's my guess but then you could also have some other issue like your toilet bowl could have a hairline crack in it or something else that is causing the leak. What did you end up doing to fix it? I have lots of videos for toilets if you want to learn more for next time you need to work on a toilet. Go to my main KZread channel page then click on playlists & scroll down to toilets. Thanks

    If the gasket between the tank and bowl was leaking, the water would run down the outside of the toilet bowl onto the floor. It would not leak into the bowl itself as stated. Now if the flapper was leaking, that would leak into the bowl.

  • @VideoJoeKnows

    @VideoJoeKnows

    I would say you could be correct but then on other toilets it could just leak into the bowl without leaking onto the floor as I have seen it happen.

    Ok....i put all new rubber seals, and a new flap...my tube has a fastener so it don't go too far. Haven't checked the gasket yet...but my problem is my tank draining...theres no water on the floor or leaking from tank but I'm having so obvious floor damage all of a sudden and it keeps leaking with no signs of where it is going. If it is the gasket under flap...how am I getting water damage? I'm kinda freaking.

    Your toilet floor gasket sounds like it's leaking just a little causing a little water to seep around the bees wax ring every time you flush the toilet. Hey Joe. I have a leak inside the actual toilet bowl. There is a constant flow in the front part of the bowl. I already opened up the tank and pressed down on the flap but, that didn't stop the flow. What can it be?

  • @VideoJoeKnows

    @VideoJoeKnows

    8 жыл бұрын

    +pepelepew02 Your toilet spud nut/rubber gasket could be in need of replacement. That's the gasket just below the toilet flapper & if this gasket is loose or not holding water anymore it will drain your water from the tank to directly to your toilet bowl. That could be your issue or your water fill valve tube if it's pushed down too far into your tank drain outlet, it could be siphoning the water out of your tank without you even realizing it. Check those things out. it's prolly one of those if you don't think its your toilet flapper. Play this video again to see what I mean.......let me know what you find... Joe :0

    I just replaced the entire inside to my toilet. When I turned the water back on, then the tank filled up. Later, I heard dripping and went in to find the water was overflowing through the handle. The floater did not stop the water flow. So I know where the leak is coming from but do not know how to fix it. Any thoughts or suggestions?

  • @freespirit9655
    @freespirit96556 жыл бұрын

    Someone told me that my invisible leak (noticeable only because the tank periodically fills on its own) is caused by a "hairline crack" in the tank (that leaks water into the bowl) and that the only solution is to replace the whole toilet. I like to keep my original toilet and would like to fix the hairline crack with something like Flex Seal. Could you explain how to go about that? Is it possible that there is a hairline crack somewhere in the tank that would let water through incredibly slowly? how could I locate the hairline crack? Thank you!

  • @VideoJoeKnows

    @VideoJoeKnows

    6 ай бұрын

    Yes that is possible but I would certainly try other things first like the stuff I show in this video. did you check all these things? I have some other toilet videos for checking a few other things too. Just go to my main KZread channel page then click on playlists & scroll down to toilets to find out. What did you end up finding? If you haven't done anything I would see if it's something else first....Could also be a leaking doughnut connection where the water can still slowly drain from the tank to the bowl without you seeing it. I would rule out all things before assuming a crack that just happens to be where you can't see it & no where else & no water seeping anywhere where you can see it or leaking on the floor. Seems highly unlikely to me...but not impossible.

    I know for sure that my toilet has a leak somewhere but i know for sure it's not in the tank portion BUT in the bowl portion. After a proper flush, water is refilled properly in the tank and the bowl but shortly there after, water in the bowl disappears into the drain. There is no water anywhere on the floor or other parts of the toilet. Can someone explain what they think might be going on? Thanks!!!

  • @VideoJoeKnows

    @VideoJoeKnows

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Arbknight Wow not sure what is causing your water to disappear in just the toilet bowl. I am going to guess you may have a hairline crack in your toilet somewhere below your toilet bowl area that holds the water then the water is going directly down the toilet drain in the floor thus you are not seeing an actual water leak anywhere. This same thing will continue to happen until you change out your toilet. I'm sure that is what is happening since there is no other explanation on why your toilet bowl water is disappearing. If you have any questions go to your local hardware store & discuss your issue with a sales person in the plumbing department & see what he comes up with but I would wager he will say the same thing. Not sure why your toilet "bowl" is not filling up. How long has it been this way? Have you noticed anything unusual happen to your toilet. Do you have water in the tank? If you have water in the tank, when you flush the tank, that water goes directly to your toilet bowl. Is your tank not filling up with water? That';s what it sounds like.
