How to Line a Leather Belt

Here is how I line all of the double layered belts that I build. I use Hermann Oak vegetable tanned leather and prefer the main body of my belts to be 9/10oz and the liner to be 3/4oz. The thickness is all personal preference but I aim for a total thickness of 12-14oz in most of the belts I make. I cut both the main body and liner of my belts from the bend section of a hide, with the butt end being on the tip of the belt. The bend section consists of the back and butt of a hide, which is ideal for belts and most other projects due to the consistency in the grain and thickness. Some people add extra materials in between the body and liner, such as poster board, an extra piece of leather, etc. which can give the belt more body and thickness. I have experimented with some of those methods and still do use an extra piece of leather in the center if I do any filigree work on a belt; however, if I am building a regular belt then I prefer to just use the two regular pieces of leather and nothing else. If I do filigree work and will be using an extra piece of leather in the center then I prefer to us 5/6oz for both the body and liner. The liner leather can be anything from regular veg tan to chrome tan leather if you desire. English Bridle is also a great choice if you want to add some luxury to the inside of the belt. Let me know what you think in the comments and please drop any additional information or tips if you have any!

    Your tooling is the best I’ve seen, absolutely amazing. Being relatively new to tooling, I have an appreciation for the care and work involved, but man your crafting is next level! The lines, the detailing, the antiquing, just insane. Time to go practice some more…

    Crazy story lol earlier today I went to message you to ask when fall orders would be open. I got side tracked watching shorts and neglected to message you. I checked my email an hour ago to see my olight order and come across your email saying all fall orders are finished. No sweat just a funny story. Quinn Gibson on this end. Love your products. Thanks for all the wonderful work you do.

    The leather weight, approx. at 14:45; that is lying on the table. How heavy is it and what did you fill it with? Your leather belts are awesome, so beautifully embossed and painted. Fantastic!

    What stamps are you using for your letters?

    Do you add length from your center hole to the tip, especially in cases where you’re tooling? An example would be tooling someone’s initials or last name at the tip, so when they pass it through the buckle it will show. If you do add length, how much?

  • @Girtyleatherco

    @Girtyleatherco

    4 ай бұрын

    I usually give 7 inches from the center hole to the tip. It can sometimes depend on the type of buckle someone uses, but if they’re in the center hole, that is usually plenty for just initials. I will sometimes go up to 8 but more than that could start to be too much overhang in my opinion.
