Have you ever practiced drums while sitting in traffic? Maybe tested out some rudiments on the dashboard? You can get even more sounds out of your own body while your hands stay safely on the wheel: by singing your drum parts.
Gregg Bissonette is always singing drum sounds. As someone who does a lot of sight reading, he often has to figure out the drum part before he sits down on the kit. He assigns a different vocal noise to each drum or cymbal and sings out the patterns. A long crash might get a 'pssshhhhh' sound, and a short hi-hat hit might sound like 'tsst'. Even just remembering a series of sounds - for example, short short long - can cement it in your memory.
The rhythmic pattern is just as important as the sounds you assign. How would you play the phrase 'follow the yellow brick road' on the drums?
You'd follow the syllables, and maybe assign different sounds to full or partial words. Like the food-themed rhythmic exercises some drum teachers use to teach young students, vocalizing rhythms can help us internalize drum parts.
So whether you're in the car, in an apartment or in an airplane, sing the bass drum, the snare, the cymbals and the toms - even if it's just in your head - and then translate it on the kit when you can.
In this video, Gregg explains how vocalizing parts helps us learn and internalize them long before we actually get to try them on the drums. We aren't just drummers who hit things - we're musicians, too!

Definitely!
When I first started playing the drums, I didn’t know how to read music. I did the same thing singing the parts. Eventually I took music classes and learned though. Great video. This will help many beginners.

Drumeo holy crap. You’re really Greg? Man you’re the most underrated drummer. I appreciate all the great music you’ve given us through the years. Lots of the drum parts that I practiced to was yours. Would love to know if you have any new music out. Thanks
Bissonette is always entertaining! I love his enthusiasm for drumming.
Gregg is the most eloquent and funny drum teacher I know. I always enjoy his lessons.
All the lessons here at Drumeo are excellent, but for me this is probably the BEST lesson here!! Greg Bissonette is a true living legend and total Drum Master!!! One of the most musical drummers ever!!! Thank you so much Greg for bringing light with this magnificent approach!!

He also played with Ringo, Carlos Santana (Supernatural - Song: "El Farol"), David Lee Roth... 03:35 Donald Duck my friend.
I find this works for me if I'm playing something tricky but I actually mouth the parts as I'm playing them, really helps!
This guy is a drumming legend. Many many many many (sorry had a Commandant Lassard moment) moons ago I used to read various rock magazines, and Gregg would have a drummers section from time to time. I enjoyed what he discussed and how he wrote about drumming.
I literally asked myself this question yesterday

I've been beatboxing my parts to remember them for a long time, and this guy just clarified the process even better
YES!Thank you!I totally understand. This is one more element for me to learn/practice.This will help move me forward.
Thank you so much for this tip! Love it! Definitely will use on my way to work now.
Outstanding stuff from Greg. Wish he'd been around teaching this stuff when I first started learning drums.
"Drum-Singing" is an essential technique that also non-drummers should learn. It is the easiest way to communicate an idea for a drum beat to your drummer! I feel like most bandmates I've had are illiterate to tell me what kind of beat they had imagined for that particular riff. The other way around as a drummer you should know what downstrokes, powerchords etc. are
Cool approach. Gonna give it a shot. Thanks Gregg!
I'm definitely no "drummer" , though I do occasionally play drums, and have done many jam sessions. I have always ( for years) tried to "mouth" a beat, or perhaps mouth it in my mind, when I'm not on the kit. I find that playing with words and syllables often helps. I thought I was bat sh*t crazy for doing this, apparently I'm not lol. Thanks a million for this ! Keep up the great work 👍👍👍☮☮☮

This reminds me of Changuito, in his solos he used to make these sounds and playing them on the drum set and timbales, now I see he was doing what he's showing on the video. Nice
Remember meeting Greg years ago. Top guy and an awsome drummer 😎
Excellent video! Amazing message and way of putting it in perspective. I've basically been playing drums my entire life then (even though I haven't owned a kit in around 6 years). I never stop "singing" drums. 🔥✌
Great drumming waoo the enrgy on this man is insane 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I'm an awesome drummer in my head. Thank you for this!!
Such a cool guy. Great drummer, great energy.
I'd give a million dollars..to take classes whit him.He his the best.
GB is definitely one of the GOATs !!
This video is pure Art
Cool video, great drum teacher and performer!!
Outstanding Greggorio!! 🎶
Why’d this video have to come to an end?! So glad to have found this channel :)
Gregg's "Private Lesson" (1988) - the best drum school ever!
"once its in your heart you play it" damn
Ha , always nice to watch and learn from Greg
I am a beginner and I use this method to remember the rolling and fills that I have to do whenever I am playing. In every part of a drum set, there is a designated sound but at first, I thought that it was a weird thing to do but it really helps me a lot.

Great video! Most people forget to be a drummer you need to be a musician first!
Greg is also an awesome guy , met him a few times here in Detroit. Greg is a MONSTER player camouflaged in a super nice guy body ! Greg is our Hal Blaine ! Peace from Detroit.
Wow sir I love to drumeo and I love to play my drum I love this 😍 video sir

Not even a drummer, but I saw the thumbnail and was like "'IS THAT GREGG BISSONETTE ?!"
nice sir❤️❤️
I usually sing the melody of other instruments. I also visualize the parts in my head and air drum a TON. Air-drumming is so important to learning motion and range. Because im applying a physical motion what im saying in my head.

My wife become mad with it ! ^^
Amazing beatboxer
Singing the drum part or singing the melody line? I always was told to sing the melody line of the song. Sure, singing the drum part when in the learning process, sure. But on a gig? I'd be singing or at least keeping the melody line of the song in mind. That's what the drummer is supporting. the melody.
Can someone please make a compilation of him making drum noises?
0:59 DING DING!
very interesting I am already doing on my guitar; in fact, at my current drumming level I can play drums better with my voice than with my feet and arms; I have a long way to go...
shoutout to all of the marching drummers who have been doing drumspeak since 2005.
What is that monster song he's playing at 5:03?! 😲

What is Greg using for his stack?
Literally every drummer you see tapping fingers on something at work; we are hearing the parts in our head.
What spring tension do you guys use, because I'm really struggling playing doubles with one foot
My elementary school gym teacher was the first person I knew who was a good drummer and I remember hearing him scat sing drum beats when answering questions I had, and silly little me thought it was funny and I would chuckle. Then he set my little punk ass straight, he said “this is how drummers talk and you’re gonna have to grow up and get used to it if you wanna be drummer, kiddo” 🤣🤣🤣
cool, I like the donaldducksound and some sounds like beatboxing 🤩 but that's a good thing thx
Someone knows the name of this band that he's playing the songs ???
Is that Sabian 14" Artisan hh ?
I knew it, I just knew it. I'm apparently not an idiot. 😆 ha ha .. I make sounds like this all the time with my mouth, to think of various rhythms, etc. Lol..🤣

I'm pretty sure i've been doing this for 45 years. 😂. (Always wanted to play drums since I was 5, mom ignored it, life took over and here I am 50 years old and still no drums.....). 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️
"Let's do that track again but we need more daffy duck"
Ah, so beatboxers are just drummers who can’t afford a drum set.
I practice with my teeth. I can "play" more complicated that way. Just move your jaws around rubbing ur teeth together. Singing is also great. If you can't sing it, you can't play it.
If you can say it you can play it.
His funny I’m lean to do the drum and I’m a kid
