I really like using it to break down Japanese sentences into their grammatical parts. It's way easier than having to ask questions in learning forums or websites. It's very useful.

It's good for beginner-intermediate level grammar explanations in Japanese (most of the time). I'm fluent and I've tested it on more advanced grammar like N2 or N1 grammar and it sometimes can't translate them back to English properly or will still bs some explanations (making it super convincing), so you gotta be a bit careful depending what level stuff you are having it do in Japanese. Yeah, it's way more convenient though than having to wait a long time for a response from humans. I wish it was slightly better at Japanese though, I tried learning psychology with it in Japanese and it keeps mistaking 原型 for 元型(アーキタイプ) I have to check it quite often or it'll teach me the wrong kanji for psychology terms in Japanese or complicated things lol

I love using ChatGPT for learning chinese. Whenever I have trouble understanding characters with really slight differences in meaning, it comes in super handy! It really spares me the hassle of going through different dictionaries definitions, and it provides endless example sentences adapted to my level 👌 Definitely a must have during a language journey

Now I'm on board with the idea of using GPT to practice foreign language oral skills, but you have to have really solid pronunciation and something like intermediate level proficiency already for it to go the way you want it to. If you say something with really poor pronunciation a human can mentally work through what they think you might mean, using context and possibly a better understanding of you or of common mistakes made by language speakers with the same native language as you, and work out what you mean. GPT isn't that smart right now, and it will simply listen to a garbled word you said and interpret it phonetically with closest approximation. The more often that happens the less a meaningful conversation you'll have. That's true with a human language partner too, but humans are much better at understanding each other through other cues. We're running a much better algorithm than GPT when it comes to comprehension of others speaking our language, and for GPT's part that algorithm is hard to learn or imitate because it's a complex cocktail of communication skills including some that are linked to the real world.

I’m using chatGPT as a writing buddy for my research papers. I’m not a native speaker, and chatGPT helps me to get a decent result very quickly. However, I’ve detected a strange problem with my prompts. Usually, I write a paragraph and then ask chatGPT to revise it. I would tell it to sound academic and so on. An I also ask it to use British English. Unfortunately, I always get a revised version in American English, for example emphasize instead of emphasise. Maybe I should take more time to write better prompts, but I thought giving me answers in BE shouldn’t be a big problem. Nevertheless, it’s a great tool to improve my academic English skills

I asked exactly as you have but now receive something like this: Moi / toi / moi / etc Toi : Salut ! Comment ça va ? Tu as des plans pour ce week-end ? Moi : Salut ! Tu as choisi quels livres à lire ? I can't seem to get it back to responding 2-way?

I would rather have an AI that fact checks it's responses. I'm still looking for an answer for how to learn computer science topics using AI. The problem is that right now you need to already be an expert both in prompt engineering and the domain of computer science to obtain responses an actual expert would give you. You need to correct ChatGPT way too often...so much so you're better off just learning by yourself than wasting time with insanely detailed prompts to get quality output from Chatgpt. For language learning ChatGpt is just fine but for any actual domain like math or computer science it's mostly a waste of time.

I'm not sure there is a "Modern RP" -- I think linguists call that "Standard Southern British English" _Real_ RP should offer no clues at all about what region a person is from, as I understand it, and most people who speak that way these days learned English in like a fancy English boarding school, or something, *_abroad._* As in Freddie Mercury.

I wouldn't use chat GPT as a key resource for listening or speaking practice as you won't learn a natural way to speak, the accent is very robootic and stiff and you don't want to base your listening skills on an unnatural speech pattern as when you come speaking it with people each with different accents, flows, intenations, etc with their speech you will be lost.
