How To Lead Worship On Zoom (the tech stuff)

Zoom was not built for worship leaders. Seriously. It’s not good for live music AT ALL. But in times like these we use what we must to the best of our ability. And for many small churches, house churches, and small groups, zoom is a godsend...literally.
Today I show you how to optimize zoom for leading worship as well as an incredibly cool but overly complicated hack to take your zoom worship to the next level.

Just wanted to say thanks so so much for taking the time to share this stuff, the info was _exactly_ what I needed today. We already stream worship most weeks (using obs, transparent lyrics, with sound desk and multiple mics, etc etc) - but always on fb live. This weekend - for reasons I won't bore you with - I have to use zoom instead and wasn't sure how to get the best out of it, thank you thank you thank you!

That's a great idea. I would never have thought about using google slides that way. One thing that may help in the middle, is that you can crop live in OBS to get the exact size you want by holding down Alt while clicking on the frame and crop any of the four sides to wherever you like. Thanks so much.

Hi Brother, what can I say? Wish that I knew you in Oct 2020. We are still using Zoom because of we don't know where to put our money and we were thinking that by using Zoom, we don't need to go too deep into the tech areas. As we take turns to PA and manage the PA as well. I like OBS, but we came across other issues such as two way communications with member and more importantly, our guest speakers for Sunday services as well. You have pointed out great ideas that I never thought of such as the transparent Google slides and using OBS as well. I hope that God will richly bless you and your ministry. Wai from Australia.

The host can allow you to share the screen, I'm not the host on mine either. As for the prayer, just wear headphones and turn down your headphone volume when playing (so you don't hear delayed audio) and back up when they are praying.

Great stuff! For cropping in OBS, you could also just hold OPTION or ALT key and then drag the corners to crop. :) For presentation software, I use *VideoPsalm* (Windows), or *Holyrics* (Win, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS). Both *free* & *portable* (meaning you can store them in a USB and run on any computer). For more advanced audio mixing & audio routing, you can also use *VoiceMeeter Banana* or *VoiceMeeter Potato.* _Both donationware but free to download. Although Banana is donationware, it's optional. Potato gives you 30 days to try it and then asks you to donate after that._ This is very useful esp if you want to feed your OBS' audio through your webcam and also actually hear Zoom or Yourself through VoiceMeeter to your headphones or monitor. You also don't need to be the Host to share your sound. Although audio quality is not as good as when you use the Share Screen option in Zoom, it's a workaround for non-hosts. It's good to have many options. :) For more advanced stuff, if you have group chat running in the background, you don't want those notification sound to be heard by people in Zoom. You can also do audio panning for each audio channel/strip, sending Zoom's sound to your left ear, while sending other media applications/notifications sound to your right ear. Lots of things you can do with VoiceMeeter. Also, depending on your use case, you may need to install VB-Cable (Virtual Audio Cable) - Free & Donationware available on their site. Good Luck

It's kind of ridiculously complicated as you said, but it's really very logical. It all makes sense. We have horrible audio problems with our live Sunday services on zoom, a whole list of concerns. We're not even to the level of using OBS yet. that's a gleam on the horizon still. That said, we have all the zoom selections selected in zoom that you talk about here. It's still baffling. I'll report back when we make progress. I might even make my own short video about how we're working and what is and is not working. Question though... if not zoom, then what?

Even better way for lyrics - use OpenLP (it's free) and output lyrics on mobile local server (the last settings menu). So OpenLP puts out lyrics on a local IP address. Adjust OpenLP's default theme and use transparent background. Then open OBS and add a Browser/URL, paste the IP from OpenLP (give it the IP your device has on the network) and OBS will neatly display lyrics as overlay on the video feed. You can even use OpenLP remote on your mobile phone to remote control the lyrics. Have fun, be blessed ✌🏼

in terms of getting your OBS feed into Zoom, there's also a plugin called "VirtualCam" - obsproject.com/forum/resources/obs-virtualcam.539/ that I've seen people using, which just makes the OBS feed show up as a webcam. Would require spotlighting the video in Zoom so everyone had it pinned though, whereas screen sharing does that automatically.

I have been using Zoom for our small church and I'm able to use our sound system using a separate mic to pick up the piano (I play piano during worship) and another mic to pick up my voice. My question is about lyrics. I use Open LP for projection during our service. (It's free for worship settings.) I hare the screen, so all everyone sees is the slide while we are worshiping. I have to minimize the Zoom app in order to manipulate and advance the screens. My problem is exiting the Open LP once we are finished. The only way I have been able to do it is hitting alt, control, delete and choosing task manager and stopping Zoom. Once I do this, my Zoom screen pops back up. Been experimenting with this. Running macOS 10.13.6 on a MacBook Pro. I am using iSingWorship (a FREE app for macOS, Windows, Android, and iOS where you just pay for the songs you use - about $3 each) for responsive (you can repeat sections, cut out the other instruments and leave only guitar, add/remove lead vocals, etc) backing tracks and lyric projection (cropped and chromakeyed into OBS) and the computer's webcam for video. It all 'works' but when I record a practice session from Zoom I find the video lags behing the audio somewhat. I am using the free iShowU Audio Capture plugin to capture the Mac's system audio (coming from iSingWorship). Do you have any experience of how to sync the audio with the video? I've tried the audio sync timings in the advanced properties of the mixer, but it doesn't seem to make any difference.

I’ve got the iShowU Audio Capture driver running as a virtual mic input into OBS. This captures the Mac’s internal audio. So, when iSingWorship plays, OBS is receiving the audio. I’ve then got OBS sending it’s monitor output to the ZoomAudioDevice as per your video. I then screen share the OBS preview window in Zoom.

Update. I found a way to fix it that also works with StreamYard (I need Zoom for Sundays and SreamYard for Thursday nights). I bought the Loopback and AudioHijack bundle. In AudioHijack I created a session that captures the system audio, immediatey routes it to my monitors (e.g., headphones) and then routes it to a delay block (250 ms) and then out to Loopback. I then use Loopback as the input device for Zoom and StreamYard. Et voila! I can monitor the audio in real time, but the signal that goes to Zoom, etc, is delayed so that it syncs with the camera feed. By the way, I love your channel. I too came here via the $4 autocue.

Great, I didn't know about Stomp. Sadly, we can't buy one on our zone. Quite a lot of tech stuff is not available on Amazon for our part of the world. Yes, I agree that everyone needs to be muted during the worship time. But you might want to make sure the settings are set to mute all on entry, and don't allow others to unmute themselves. I have had too many times where people have joined late, and they unmuted themselves during worship (inadvertently) and started having an off-screen conversation about their lunch or whatever. Not a great experience for the rest of us! I had originally tried to have co-hosts set up to mute and unmute people as needed, but it didn't work out so well. So I am sticking to having full control, and keeping tabs on participants. I would like to try OBS studio, but with only having space for one screen atm, it's a bit tricky to use Zoom to its best, so wouldn't be able to use all the features of OBS you described (and would have to change slides by hand). Doing full screen share in Zoom has been problematic, as I can't access other software (such as word doc with the scripture reading) while full screen. If I do a "partial screen share" by using settings in powerpoint for lyrics it gets over that when using one screen, but isn't ideal as you have to mess around with the shared image size and keep the control bar out of the way etc. But then you only have the lyrics on screen and have to switch back to speaker view when the song has finished. We preferred to have the lyrics on screen while the songs were playing than rely on pdf or song sheets sent out and have someone switch the pages when needed, or make a video ahead of time where you didn't have to switch pages at all. I do have a second screen, which was intended to replace my current one, and is a lot larger, but that means I don't have space for both. Thanks for the worship sets on Reawaken that help out in regard to "live" worship when things aren't always possible to get a band or group together.

Dear Nathan, I am currently having 3 inputs (vocal, guitar and a keyboard) in worship leading on Zoom. I have the instruments plugged into a mixer and sends out the MAIN OUT to a DAW (Reaper) to convert the analog sound to digital. I get a member to share screen on lyrics (using Power Point), which means to say, people will only see a little window of me..... so you can understand how precious is your idea.
