I just wanted to thank you for your great instruction! I took my first boat out today and launched it and retrieved it using the technique you showed. It worked great and made that part of my day super easy. I even had a guy at the launch ramp laughing at me and then he saw how well it worked and he didn’t laugh anymore. I can’t thank you enough! Take care Sir!

Glad it helped !! what kind of boat do you have? you can also try the drive on the trailer method. i also use the trolling motor method but you have to pull it up before it hits the trailer lol (can be risky)

Amateur boater here and your instruction videos are PRICELESS! I will always refer to them until I get comfortable doing it alone. Matter of fact, I will save this one and the docking video to my file. I would like to email you with questions I may have because Spring 2015 will be my first time doing this. I took a Coast Guard sponsored class and received a SCDNR certification but it was some things you covered which a classroom cannot properly teach.

After all these years, this is still the best how to solo launch on KZread. Came back for a refresher since I've started solo fishing again. One addition I've been doing is backing up in neutral, letting gravity guide your truck and boat to the water. That way, if the foot slips off the break, you don't accidently slam on the gas while reversing. I've found its also easier managing the trailer direction with the slower approach to the water.

Good job, video. I launch a 24 ft. Center Console, often by myself. My trailer has tall guide poles in rear, which help to center boat when recovering, especially in wind. I like your idea of tying launch rope to post in front of trailer, ensuring your bow is remains centered when boat floats off. I think I could use your technique, and "skip" rope over the rear guide poles. Thanks for posting this. Appreciate your interest in helping others. You set a great example to boating/fishing people.

i always say you either get out of your car and help me or shut the f**k up when launching solo with impatient people behind me. normally shuts them up. if you see someone looking clueless or having a hard time, ask if they need help. It will make it quicker for you too.

Ahh... revisiting this old video. Offering help at a boat ramp more often than not gets a big "fuck off" response. People don't like being made to look incompetent. The best thing to do is take responsibility for your own education and visit your local ramp during less busy times and learn how to do things correctly instead of trying to blame everyone else for your lack of skills. If you can't do things efficiently, than why are you going on the busiest times knowing full well you'll hold everyone up? If you still ignore this advice, if you know you are incompetent and need assistance, why not take responsibility yourself to find somebody to help before you get to the ramp and make an ass of yourself and than start seeking help after the fact?

I go out alone most of the time, but I usually just back in until it floats, then take the bow strap off, put on a pull line like yours, and push the boat off the trailer. I use the pull line to beach it, or bring it to the dock depending where I'm fishing. When I load up, I beach it to the side, back my trailer in, push the boat out, and use the pull line to guide it on to my trailer, then winch it on. I never power load. Nice set up btw. I'd like to have a Power Pole or Talon, they're just so damn expensive.

The trailer and rollers on it guide you on. Why hand crank it all the way? Just line the boat up and let it drift in, then the trailer will do the work for you.

Hey, thanks for the awesome tip. Saved the day from a disaster. Launched my brand new boat the first time ever and I was with moms who can't swim and needed to hold the ropes. So I thought. First attempt, mom lets go of stern rope out of fear of the water no biggie. 2nd attempt, mom is in the water knee deep with shoes on and not letting out any slack. (mom is 73). Then I remembered your tip, "tie the rope to the trailer". Thank God no one was at the ramp till I had the boat setup right on the dock like I've done it a million times. I'v learned a ton from your videos. Cheers!

Best launch and load tutorials on KZread. Thanks Tony. Especially love how you point out the importance of leaving the winch connected until you are in the water. So many other "solo launch" videos here on KZread don't do that and it's just a matter of time before they experience why they should leave the boat connected to the winch.

Nice of you to post, thanks--just a comment or two. Often places that wire the trailer do not use the correct wire connectors, don't know if that is way your starboard trailer light is out. And there are variances that work. On mine, I learned I don't need to back down too far--I can just walk back there, walk across the trailer tongue, unhitch and climb aboard--back the boat off and put it at the temp dock. Walk back to the truck and park it--return to temp dock for boat.

Great video, Tony. The rope trick is great for solo launching so I don't have to depend on my car's handbrake to hold it still while I detach. It's a manual transmission so the only ways to keep it still are the parking brake and shutting the engine off while in gear, which I wouldn't want to do with the exhaust in the water. This way, I can lower the boat off the bunks, pull forward until my rear end is well on land, then securely park with the engine off and exhaust well away from the water.

The boat wasn't coming off the bunks, even when I had it backed into the water! We had to actually push it off, but we got her in. The rope did help to not have my helper having to hold onto it.

Also wanted to add, that at least in some areas (like mine) it is technically illegal to boat alone (I'm on the ocean) because the regs say you must have one "full time lookout" and you can't both run the boat and be the full time lookout. Law or not, I don't recommend anyone go out alone, two eyes are better than one and believe in the buddy system for other reasons too. thanks again for posting, good video

You are so right about impatient people. One day I was trying to pull my boat out of a river surrounded by impatient people. My wife got the boat on the trailer, but did not hook it good enough and the boat slid back into the water. I backed the car up and jumped out to help her re-hook it up. Well my car (actually my wife's car) was still in reverse and it shot backwards down the ramp, floated a little bit, then sunk. I let the inpatients of the people make me impatient and rush . . . and you are right, serious mistakes were made! By the way, great video.

Good Vid, I'd like to add that I have to launch at a ramp that isn't the easiest to back into so I went to my local trailer store where I bought a front hitch, which they installed for a minimum price. Now when I head to the boat launch I stop in the parking lot and connect the trailer to the front which makes pushing the trailer about a hundred times easier than backing it into the water. The time I save doing it this way more than makes up for the time it takes to disconnect the trailer from the rear hitch turn my truck and connect the trailer to the front hitch. I also use the front hitch to put my trailer into my drive way which was not possible connected to the rear hitch, there just wasn't enough street width to swing the trailer into my yard but with the front hitch there's nothing to making the trailer turn then push it into its parking space - and the up front view of where the trailer is tracking is a factor that all by itself was worth the the price of the front hitch and the time it takes to disconnect from the rear hitch, turn the truck around and reconnect to the front hitch - just saying. The only thing that I'd say about the way you launch your boat is that I've used your method of looping the connecting rope and letting it play out when the boat starts floating away from the trailer, in maybe a thousand launches over the years I've had at least 3 occasions - if not more that I don't remember - when the rope decided to tangle itself into a Gordian knot which for me anyway is one big pain in my butt. So what I did was fabricate a piece of 6 inch PVC pipe and a mount for it that slips onto the trailer tongue to which I spool my launching rope which ensures a sure fire play out of the rope. Now some may think this is a bit much but I like to have everything ready to launch when I go out by myself which makes being ready for most anything bad that happens well worth the effort it takes to prepare for my day on the water so I don't mind taking a couple of minutes in my driveway to wrap my launch safety line on that length of PVC pipe and once I've loaded my fishing gear, bate if I'm using it and anything else I might be in need of I'm ready to go - works for me.

My Lund manual says to block the back tires of the truck. The blocks can be connected to the trailer with a rope. The blocks follow the truck when you drive away. That would be for steep and slick launches.

If you have sealed trailer lights or LED trailer lights you can leave them plugged in. Back in the day when they did not have sealed boat trailer lights, the hot bulb would come into contact with the water and bust, not to mention corrosion over time. I have switched to LED lights on my boat trailer, well worth the money spent.

What I do is loosen the winch to where it's got maybe 4-5 inches of slack, back the boat in until it floats, crank motor, and put it in forward so it will give the winch slack and I take the winch hook off, and away I go. I kknow it sounds complicated, but it's easier done than trying to explain it.
