How To Land Your First Job As A Paralegal even with ZERO Experience: Tips from a Lawyer
Do you want to be a paralegal? It's a great career choice! But what does it take to become one?
Paralegals are in high demand, and in this video, I'll share some tips on how to become one.
In North Carolina, it is not required to have a paralegal certificate in order to work as a paralegal, but it can certainly help. Paralegals may voluntarily choose to become certified and use one of the following titles: North Carolina Certified Paralegal, North Carolina State Bar Certified Paralegal, Paralegal Certified by the North Carolina State Bar Board of Paralegal Certification, or NCCP.
Educational requirements for North Carolina certification are: an associate, bachelor’s, or master’s degree in paralegal studies; a juris doctorate degree from a law school; or an associate or bachelor’s degree in another filed complemented by a post-baccalaureate certificate in paralegal studies.

very helpful! im in college doing both a paralegal certificate and a bachelor's in criminal justice, can't wait to be a criminal law paralegal!!
My guess is that it doesn’t matter what background your paralegals come from, because they ran into a fantastic boss/mentor. 😊👍🏻

I am currently in a paralegal program after working in insurance for many years. We are presently reviewing surveys and writing metes and bounds legal descriptions. I love your videos!🙌

Stay out of personal injury unless you want to constantly perpetuate insurance fraud for auto accidents where no real injury exists. PI lawyers are also the laziest, most pampas types in my vast experience.
This was great information, thank you for sharing.
Loved the video always really informative 👍🏻
Solid advice, thanks for sharing.
Very informative video! Thank you!
ty soo much for this video! You reminded me of all the skills I've developed over the years in retail and accounting that I didn't realize were transferable. I'm heading into a paralegal certification program and hopefully can work in IP.
high school students can apply for internships! I did a science camp for my freshmen year and i worked at a law firm over the summer for my sophomore year. I learned so much! All for one month and i got paid as well. A win-win. :)
I love this video! Hope you do more!
I wish I get a boss like you!
Thank you
helpful.
liked the way you think.
Is paralegal a good inroad to becoming an attorney? I heard a seasoned Paralegal can pass the bar after 5-6 years in a law firm. Thoughts?
I'm getting my associate degree in paralegal studies will that be sufficient enough to get work
Nice video! I wonder which other states do not require formal education/certification

Good question!
Where in NC is this law firm? I live in the Asheville area.
I’m currently in a paralegal certificate program & am concerned with how many job listings require a bachelors or associates degree on top of certificate or certification. Any advice for the best way to enter into the field with just a paralegal certificate & no college degree?

You're up against stiff competition but the most important thing is keep putting yourself out there! You'll get turned down until you meet the RIGHT one. A lot like dating lol. But once you have the experience from your first job your doors will open like crazy!
Hi Tiffany! I have a question. I just got my paralegal certificate from Boston University's Online Paralegal Program. However, I reside in Florida; I was told by admissions that I can still use this certificate in other states, and identify myself as a certified paralegal. Would this apply in North Carolina?

I would be concerned that your English is not fluent enough to be a paralegal, especially in Ontario, Canada. There are a lot of errors in your comment. In Ontario, you have to go through an accredited paralegal program, pass the paralegal exam to become certified, and pay for paralegal licensing/membership with the Ontario law society. It’s not like in the US. A paralegal in Ontario can actually practice in certain areas of law independently. Law clerks in Ontario also need specialized training and certification. The role that requires the least amount of training is legal assistant. But it also requires impeccable English skills. There is a lot of writing involved.
I am currently a 911 operator/dispatcher, looking to switch into being paralegal, I feel I can excell at this type of job. However trying to transition via linkedin and other sites have been troublesome, What the best way to reach out to firms or any specific tips for me?

I also have an associates in criminal justice and a paralegal certification from a program during highschool, idk if thats still applicable.
I'm a software engineer and oddly enough I work at one of the largest Law Firms in Colorado. I'm thinking about going into law. I was going to see if my company would be willing to keep me on until I finish my paralegal degree and then hopefully transfer from the IT department to the paralegal department. My ultimate goal is to become a full attorney. Do you think this is good path or should I just go straight to Law School? My thinking is that there is really little harm done getting an AAS in Paralegal Studies. I already have a degree so I would only need to take about 30 credits and only cost about $3 - 4k. Then I can be immersed in legal proceedings to see if I'm going to like it. I would hate to apply to law school and enroll and be 2 years in before I realize that I don't like it. Keep in mind that law was what I was going to go into originally but right before I applied to law school I was hired as a software engineer making 6 figures so I was hard to leave that to go to law school.

I’m a legal assistant at an immigration law firm, I would suggest starting out as a legal assistant/paralegal or shadow them to see if you would really like it !! It depends on the field you might end up loving it or not.

Oh I don’t have a degree, I was trained on the job. It was low pay when I started but it gave me the opportunity to start somewhere.

Do attorneys hire more women than men? I'm currently a surgical tech, I just got tired of the healthcare industry. Can males become paralegals, Also I don't want to spend $70,000 for law school, neither borrow loans. I'm 33 and I feel like its to old to attend law school, but I like criminal law and knowing about the law. Can my gender be a obstacle when getting hired ? Thank you

If you were accepted into a law school today and started class this fall, you'd be about 37-ish years old, right? Regardless, you are going to be 37 anyway... why not be a lawyer by the time you get there? In late life, it's not the things that we did that we regret, but the things we didn't do...
Do you have free training online I am an inspiring paralegal VA from the Philippines.
