HOW TO KNOW IF A CAR JUMPED TIMING CHAIN TIMING BELT. SYMPTOMS JUMPED TIMING
How to know if a car jumped timing chain without taking the engine apart? You cannot tell 100 percent if a car jumped timing chain but 90 percent of the time you can by looking at this symptoms. Sometimes cars will jump timing chain or belt and the engine will be trashed, other times they will jump only 1 or 2 teeth and the engine might be ok but you will need to reset the timing.

As a mechanic, I'll explain it in more simpler terms! A engine that's jumped time, but still runs, needs to be diagnosed as to whether it's jumped a few teeth on one or the other of its timing sprockets. In which case can't be repaired but only replaced instead. Or has simply gotten it's timing advance or derate out of adjustment at its distributor, which is a easy fix. The most common signs are. Hard starting with quick, uneven, upward spiking when cranking over. Unsteady idle, or misfire, with excessive engine vibration. Intermittent but steady popping noise at the exhaust pipe. Noticeable loss of power and decrease of fuel mileage. Excessive valve tick or chatter, especially during acceleration. Changing a timing set can be difficult and labor intensive, and should only be attempted by someone properly qualified! Several factors go into getting the engine set precisely back into its proper timing position. There is no latitude for this because if the time settling is positioned just one or two teeth incorrectly, it can cause further internal damage, in just a matter of a few seconds!

Easy way for no starts: First check with starter fluid. If it starts with starter fluid, you know that the fuel system is not functioning correctly. Check for spark next with a spark tester; they're cheap. If spark and fuel are both good, I'd pull the plugs. Check for excessive gap. Shine a light down the cylinder bores to be sure they're not full of water. Turn it over a few times without the plugs to spray any water out. Next would be a compression test. If you have a scope, relative compression test would be quickest. If not, Harbor Freight sells standard kits for cheap prices. Next get a cigar and a piece of flexible tube. Remove the airbox from the engine. Tape the tube to the intake charge tube and start smoking the cigar and blowing smoke down the tube. Any leaks in the intake manifold should be visible. Perhaps you have a giant intake leak. Be sure to check voltage level, and voltage drop during start. The starter motor may be no good. Usually it's the solenoid that gives out first (the plunger that engages the starter gear). That would be observed as a "click" sound when you try to engage the starter. If it's turning over the solenoid is good. Sometimes starter motors can become weak and turn too slowly. There could be an obstruction (like water in the cylinders) keeping it from revolving fast enough to start the engine. Also, if there is water in the engine, chances are you'll need new connecting rods because they'll bend. If all else fails and you can't find a problem, check for an intertia switch. There is a switch in most vehicles that will disable the fuel pump after an accident. They can get tripped even if you hit a bump hard enough sometimes. You just need to press a button (usually red) to reset it. If that's not the problem and everything else seems good, I would suspect a bad ECU.

Please help! Recurring p0012 and p0015 intake and exhaust timing over retarded I have a 2008 X3 3.0SI with 107,000 miles on it. Shortly after purchasing it I got those two codes. After searching everyone said it was the vanos solenoids. So I replaced both of those with OEM parts. A week later the codes came back. I bought another vanos solenoid thinking maybe I got 2 bad ones. I replaced just one of them. The codes came back shortly after and it again was both intake and exhaust at the same time. I took a shot in the dark and replaced the vanos check valves, the codes still came back. Then I replaced the camshaft position sensors thinking maybe they were just broken. The codes still came back. When the codes do come back it is usually just after startup and I can feel the engine surge a bit, and then it throws the codes. Curiously every single time it throws the codes it is both intake and exhaust at the same time. I think it might be the vanos actuator motor? To summarize I've replaced: Both vanos solenoids Both camshaft position sensors Both Vanos check valves Either way I want to stop throwing parts at it in hopes it will fix the problem. Any idea

Or another symptom of the timing being off is when you turn the engine off, and the engine has a shudder, like as if is has bad engine mounts. That has just happened to me, it was starting faster and had a little more power ( Amazingly) And one Day I was driving, and the Engine stalled, couldn't get it started. So I went in the timing case and the crank and follow cam were the same at 3.5 teeth off. When I set the crank angle straight up, the main cam 2.5 teeth back (Retarded). This problem happened after an impact. And all the computer said was P0336, open or shorted circuit. So I had replaced the crank sensor and was ready to replace the crank sprocket (Reluctor ring) And then I find that the timing belt skipped it timing. Also, the computer did say that all Cylinders are misfiring, You know codes P0301 thru P0304, like what is this? But the car up until that point was feeling and sounding very smooth as usual, until I shut the engine off. Oh, And I also had a code for running Rich in bank one. This is on a early Subaru Outback 2.5l.

I AM HAVING THE EXACTTTT SAME PROBLEM!!! DID YOU EVER FIND A FIX? Also misfiring in every cylinder. the front pulleys and serpentine belt go spin smooth for about 3 2 seconds then dies down for about a half second then repeats. i replaced all ignition coils. spark plugs, air filter, MAF. let me know asap please!!! it could also be the transmission fluid i was researching earlier so im going to try that this week because i never checked it and my transmission is definitely slipping.
