How to Knit Your First Fair Isle pattern: The "Fleur-De-Lys" stitch - So Woolly

Ойын-сауық

In this tutorial, I’m showing how to knit your first Fair Isle pattern, while showing the Fleur-De-Lys stitch (or Lilly Flower). It's an easy yet pretty stitch, which makes it the perfect introduction to an ancient knitting technique, that allows us to create pretty designs, by combining two or more colors.

    What a good tutorial for beginning Fair Isle. I had always wanted to try it but felt a bit intimidated by working with two colours. But this lesson makes me think I might try it once again. As always, great video, cheers!

    Hi! Thank you for starting this new tech! I have a love/fear relationship with fair isle knitting. I love it it’s so beautiful, even the simplest pattern, but I cringe at the thought of handling multiple balls of yarn at one time😳🤭😖...but watching you has calmed me. I am eager to learn from you because I have been very successful following and learning from every one of your online lessons. I can’t thank you enough for all that you have done to stabilize my knitting habits. Most grateful in California🥳♥️💐

    I've always been so frustrated when I tried fair isle knitting before. I always managed to get completely tangled up in my yarn. So, I'd calmly remove my needles, carefully frog what I managed to stitch and put it away untill I felt more capable and ready to try again. In watching your tutorial, I already have a better sense of how to manage the multiple yarns. I'm really looking forward to seeing how to manage the floats in your future fair isle tutorials. Thank you so much, Carolina! You always clear away my self doubts and build up my confidence so that I'm eager to try again. ✌️💜🧶🤟🌻

    I did an Icelandic jumper years ago without really understanding the difficulties. It was lovely but too tight over my shoulders as my tension was so tight. This encourages me to have another go

  • @sowoolly

    @sowoolly

    I’m sorry about your jumper, Icelandic sweaters are beautiful and can be intricate. What I like to do, with this kind of patterns especially, is to practice by knitting a swatch, a big one, repeating the rows/rounds several times. Once I feel comfortable, then I start a big project. Anyway, I’m happy to hear that you feel good to give it another chance! Enjoy 😊

    I loved the pattern. I've knitted with 2 colors before (and am always wrapping one yarn over the other in the back of my work and getting the skeins tangled) so I would love to learn a better way to not have those long bars in the back.

    Thank you so very much. You are the reason why I will be able to knit in fair isle after not understanding so many other videos. You are amazing and your videos are easy to understand and are perfect for beginners. One question before I start how many stitches do you recommend for a scarf using worsted weight yarn? Would the next size after 21 be 27?

  • @sowoolly

    @sowoolly

    2 ай бұрын

    OMG! Thank you! You put a smile on my face 🤗 When working with worsted weight yarn, you normally get 16 to 20 stitches per 10 cm/4 in. Please knit a swatch first, to double check your gauge, and then, decide the width of your scarf. I love XXXL scarves (around 25 cm wide) but maybe you prefer a thin one (12-13 cm). I have a tutorial, explaining step by step what to do when knitting a rectangle or square: sowoolly.net/the-essential-guide-to-stitches-yarn-and-measurements-for-your-knitting-crocheting-projects/ And yes, multiples of 6 + 3: 6*4=24+3=27 Enjoy your knitting journey❣️
