Thanks so much you explained it very well 😇 and for some reason there is not much on KZread that explains mosaic knitting and their charts. Yours and Suzanne Bryan (I think) are like the only one and listening to you both explain thing with different tips and info helps a lot. I love fair isle but my tension is horrible no matter what I try and I think mosaic knitting my help me practice with colors and maybe someday I can test my fair isle again but I am excited to try mosaic knitting. Great tutorial!! 😊

Good Morning, I’m writing from Madrid, Spain. I’m very happy to discover your channel. KZread has suggested me a few days ago to see you. At the beginning I’m afraid because my English is not as good as I would like but you speak very clearly and slowly and it’s perfect for me. I understand what is the mosaic and I’m introducing this stitch in my veste. Thank you very much for your instructive channel. Have a good day

This is the tutorial for the mosaic part. The book takes this super simple colorwork technique and combines it with lace techniques. If you are comfortable knitting lace then it will be no problem! But if you haven't tried your hand at lace yet it might be a bit challenging. The book does have a wide range of complexity when it comes to the projects - from the simple mitts that I showed in this video up to full blown lace shawls and a bit of everything in between.

There is a fine line between being concise and confusing and knitting tries to walk it all of the time. You want to convey the information in as compact a manner as possible but there is always the risk of assuming too much. I hope you have fun with color!

Honestly, it is easier in the round. What I demonstrated for the right side you would simply do that twice! You don't have to remember to slip with the yarn in front on the WS because there is no WS.

Hi Barbara, thank you for another fabulous video tutorial. I'm don't do too much colorwork such as mosaic, but I must say your designs are beautiful. I'm not sure if it is appropriate to ask, how long does it take to come up with a design and what is the motivation that drives you to use the color schemes per each project? Thanks again. Respectfully, Donna

Thank you so much for your kind words. It is totally fine to ask questions like that, but I won't always have a good answer LOL. Different designs take different amounts of time. Some come together quickly (a month or two) and some take longer. I've had designs that took over six months from concept to knitting. As far as color schemes - I tend to look at a LOT of yarn and try and decide what colors speak to me. And most of the time I have the yarn before I come up with the design as opposed to the other way around. I pick out two colors that I want to use together and then spend quality time swatching until I find something they like.

Hi Barbara. I have never tried mosaic knitting, but recently I have been wanting to try colorwork. I have done fair aisle once or twice but have never been completely happy with it. I didn't know there was a difference between fair aisle and mosaic knitting. Now I want to try it! Also I LOVE the shawl you have in the background. Is this pattern in your book? If not, where can I get it? Also, I would like to buy your book, is it available by ordering from you and how would I do that? Hope this is not too confusing. Anyway, thanks again for a wonderful video. You are the best! Terry

he piece on the mannequin in the background is Ready Player One which is available on Ravelry here: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/ready-player-one so not in the book! You can't order the book directly from me but I encourage you to try your local yarn store. If that doesn't work there is always Amazon amzn.to/3en5lM8

Can an asymmetric scarf be done with a mosaic pattern. I have an idea in my head which can be painful to have an idea but not sure if it will work?

Almost anything can be done, but some require more math than others LOL. I have several asymmetrical shawls that use mosaic. This is probably one of the simplest: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/confundo

Barbara, @ 10.22 do you bring the white yarn under the red or over the red? Thanks for a reply

  • @WatchBarbaraKnit

You bring it up the same way each time, the important thing is that you be consistent. I’m afraid I don’t think of it as over/under so I’m not sure how to answer your question. I bring the new color up behind the one I’m stopping so that the old yarn is trapped between the new yarn and the fabric.

That is absolutely ingenious of you I’ve alway wanted to knit Fair-ail but was intimidated because of all the yarn carrying through . I tried it once the eye of an owl but it end up the owl had a bulging eyes . But with you technique that will not happen. What is the name of your book, in Amazon? Thanks for your great tutorial

I didn't come up with the concept of slip stitch color-work, but I sure love it. The name of my book is Mosaic & Lace Knits and it is on Amazon!

  • @WatchBarbaraKnit

You just cast on with one color and work two rows. Then you join in the second color.

Do you have to worry about the tension of your float if you slip 3 stitches, for example?

Yes, but not as much as with stranded knitting. Just making sure that each stitch has the same amount of space as the other stitches usually works.

I have been watching all your tutorials while stuck in bed from a leg injury. You mention the mitten pattern being in your book but you have 2 books. Would you please tell me which book? You are a good instructor because you "speak" beginner knitting language. Thank you

I am glad you enjoyed the video. The mitten is in my first book, Mosaic & Lace Knits. I am working on getting the patterns from this book converted into single PDFs because the rights to do so have reverted to me. Of course if you like more than a couple of projects in the book it will be more cost effective to just get the book LOL.

May I ask what type of knitting you’re doing? Is it European or left handed?

  • @WatchBarbaraKnit

I knit in the Continental style. I tension the yarn in my left hand but I knit in the traditional Western style. True "left handed" knitting is called mirror knitting and I cannot do that at all LOL.
