How To Kill Weeds In Landscape
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Killing weeds in landscape areas is always a challenge especially during the rainy season. We don’t have many mulch beds here in El Paso, Tx but we do have plenty of rock beds.
Our city practice Xeriscape and the utilization of rock is a very common landscape application. Even though weed barriers are put down, weeds and grass still manage to find its way through the material. So killing weeds effectively is always a challenge and can be overwhelming. Killing weeds in landscape areas can be done with a few techniques. The most effective that I have found is the use of Non-selective herbicides and staying on top of the problem before it’s gets out of hand.

Thank you for all the information. I was glued to the tv. I am in California and haveca zero scape yard. Weeds are coming up through the fabric and rocks. Thank you for ALL the talking! Now i know what to do.
I grew up in El Paso and I can't tell you how much I love seeing the rock! As you know, at least in all eastern portions, we have great rock walls. Few weeds because we had so much Caliche. In the Loma Linda area, we had 6ft walls in stone, caliche that didn't allow weeds to grow, and when I was a kid, hundreds of miles of undeveloped land that we could shoot fireworks into from our back yard. Tarantulas that we felt were pets, scorpions that never stung because we weren't afraid, The occasional Hila monster that we were warned about, but really wanted to pick up. This was in the 70's, so I know much has changed. So, what I know, is that to kill weeds in a hardscape like rock (which makes sense in El Paso), use one gallon of vinegar, one cup of salt, and one tablespoon of dishwashing liquid. Mix and spray and that weed will never, ever, come back. I honestly miss my home. It's not what it was when we left in the 70's (transferred to the Dallas area). El Paso was my home and the thing that gave me joy in later years. Okay, you're making this whole thing too difficult. Just use the vinegar/salt/dish soap recipe.

Thank you for this video! I live in a rental townhome and my backyard is completely xeroscaped. Unfortunately, the barrier fabric has ripped (if I owned the property I would just redo the fabric) and occasionally there is an influx of grass so hopefully, Natria does the job!

Thank you for this awesome information! We live in Ohio and my daughter has a landscaped (with mulch) area around her house that grows nothing but weeds. They (and I) have tried Roundup and other brands to kill them (also used Preen!) and nothing seems to work. I have never NOT had luck with weed/grass killer. I am going to buy Nutria and add baby shampoo. I will be applying it tomorrow. I hope it works! I'll keep you posted.

Thanks for the video. I am still confused. I have a rock bed with plants spaced a couple feet a part from each other. Is it safe to use the Naturia on the weeds and not kill the plants or not? I live near Seattle where it is cool and wet and my rock bed has some random weeds throughout. The rocks make it difficult to work and get the weeds. I used rocks instead of mulch, but now that’s an issue too!
Thank you so much finally someone that taught me something! Great video!

Actually a safer alternative would be 'industrial vinegar' sold at Amazon. Dilute the vinegar and spray on weeds while the sun is shinning. This is safer for your dogs, cats and kids. Considering how dangerous weed chemicals are... well you choose. Imagine those chemicals on your hands compared to vinegar.

Thank you! we're in Colorado and xeriscaped our backyard last year and now the weeds are coming up. this is super helpful. luckily I think we're early enough for herbicide. Question though: we have tons of branches and leaves that fall throughout the year - I try to stay on top of it but think they are filling up the rock beds a bit. Any advice on that?

Howdy and we have clients with the same issue and we simply use our leaf blowers to blow out the rock beds. Time consuming but it keeps the rocks leaf free.

A once per gallon is sufficient and we always recommend Prodiame rotated with Dithopyr.
You can also use Dawn dishwashing soap, or olive oil, really any natural oil.. also you can use vinegar, salt, lemon juice, and either olive oil, or dawn, that kills weds but can also kill grass.

Whats the difference between herbicide and the 3 in 1 bags of turf builder or grass stabilizer/grwer/weed killer
@SunCityLawnCare
2 ай бұрын
Primarily the concentration percentages and we like to separate the weed control from fertilizer applications. For example if you don’t have any weed pressure then it makes no sense to apply a product containing herbicides.
This was very informative. I have weeds growing on top of my mulch and Bermuda growing through the weed barrier. Some are near shrubs. what is your take on using a non-selective around small bushes? Should I cover them with plastic before using any type of herbicide? will the product run off and eventually get into the dirt and affect the roots of the bushes? I purchased 400 bags of mulch, but I dont want to put it down before I take care of the weed problem...
@SunCityLawnCare
3 ай бұрын
If using non-selective near shrubs I’d suggest keeping the pressure extremely low and place a piece card board between the weed and shrub your treating to prevent any drift into the healthy plant. Would not over saturate to avoid any leaching into the soil. Safest measure would be to hand pull.

Howdy there and that’s a great question. With flower beds I would normally recommend hand pulling weeds. Especially if the flowers have already blossomed. If your just start the bed and everything is still dormant you can spay a non-selective herbicide to kill what is unwanted, wait a few weeks , Then plant your or sow you new flowers.
I am confused. Do I buy a surfactant "and" baby shampoo both to add to some herbicide? Or just one or the other. My yard is the same gravel all over and tiny grass and weeds I want to kill. Thank you...

I’m assuming your irrigation line is ran underneath your xeriscape so that will reduce chance of a herbicide running off into the soil system. Any of the mentioned non-selective herbicides will work. The key is to make sure your spray on a zero windy day so as no drift lands on the tree. Depending on the wee you can also look into a selective herbicide to simply target that specific weed.

Honestly when it comes to flower beds and garden beds we keep the weed killers away and pull by hand. To kill crabgrass we use Quinclorac (post-emergent) and Bio-Advance for the purple dead needle. Just make not to spray your flowers.

Not baby oil….Baby Shampoo. It acts as a surfactant and breaks down the water molecules. If your local to El Paso and want something more professional grade you can get a bottle of surfactant at Tractor Supply.
When buying a Selective weed killer: *Is organic as efficient as non-organic? *What ingredient should we look for and what percentage? *Instead of baby shampoo, will a few drops of Dawn dishwashing soap work? *What brand of Selective herbicide do you recommend that is organic and similar to Natria? Thanks for the questions and both have their pros and cons. I’ve found that organic non-selective herbicides work the fastest. Dawn can be used as a surfactant as well. 1tbsp per gallon. @SunCityLawnCare as much as I hated using it, I had to get pesticide. A 30-year-old house with original rock landscaping is going to be a continuous issue because the barriers are disintegrated. We were renting, so the landlord had no desire to fix it. I tried vinegar, alcohol, and got water to try for a natural response. Then, after they're dead, I used a long-handled soil breaker to get the roots. The house I have now is beautifully landscaped and has some faux grass. It's beautiful.
