Hey Jeff I just found out from another site that fresh soil naturally acidifies any water added to it and is able to balance the nutrients and salts- however, over time the soil loses the ability to do this if it’s been fed only alkaline water. That’s why salts build up later in our pots - the soil can no longer balance the water and use the salts. If we refresh the soil when we see this then the new soil will rebalance the tap water again. This is why we can still grow plants successfully with tap water at first but over time, with the same soil, we may get a decline in the plant. So either, refresh the soil or balance the water before watering. Both will work. 🥰👍 But I’ve taken your advice to add acid to my water, using the products you’ve recommended.

I got a cutting of this plant from my grandmother about 20 years ago. I have started several others and so have my mother & my daughter. I gave a cutting to my sister-in-law, and she had it started in a jar of water and left it in there for years! My grandmother called it a rosary plant (because of the way it attaches to itself). I'm glad to have started others because the main plant did end up dying; I thought it was me. Thanks!

@@EverythingPlants It definitely lasted longer than 5 years (so did my mother's) but did eventually die. I thought I had done something wrong. I can't be certain, but I'd bet it was at least 10 years for the main plant. My mom's eventually died, also. My daughter & I still have smaller plants we started from the main plant.

My string of pearls started to die off after about 3 years, too. No matter what I tried. It started to get dry and die close to the roots, leaving the vines healthy longer, which I found odd. I didn’t know then how to propagate it, so it eventually just went in the compost bin. Now I have two new string of pearls plants and am glad to know how to get them to thrive even better than the first one. Also, trying to locate a video on the propagation boxes you use. What do you put in them, how do you store them, and so on. Thank you for all your great info!

Hi Jeff. Thanks for sharing this information about String of Pearls. I have two small pots and both are in kind of a mixture of regular potting mix plus some orchid bark and Perlite. For the moment they seem to be growing well. I had them outside under a patio but decided to bring them inside. One I have put in my bathroom and now thinking it’s not such a good idea, there is a skylight which I thought would provide enough light but the ends of the vines a turning upwards towards the ceiling. After watching your video I can see I’m doing all the wrong things with my plants and firstly need to check the light level as well as repot into succulent mix. Thanks again, you’ve really set me on the right track now and I’ll deal with both plants today. (May even put them back in one pot for a fuller plant).

String of pearls will live about 5 years. I think if one constantly adds back into the plant pot you could keep it going for an indefinite amount of time. Many mites can only be seen with 60x- 90x zoom. You just wouldn't see them. If you have a declining plant try a sulphur treatment. It will either respond very quickly and perk up or expire. It basically kills all types of pests. I use a 1 part Tea Tree to 10 parts water spray treatment on my plants. It kills black mold, fungus, viruses, aphids, mites, false mites, thrips, and mealy bugs. Your plant is beautiful. I know for myself I am guilty in the past of not replacing the soil every 1.5-2 yrs or so. This can really keep plants living longer.💚🪴☘️🌱🌵🌿🍃

i first saw this plant at the tender age of 17 (will be 59 in sept )... spent the bulk of my adulthood looking for one...finally "found" one when one of my highschool friend's adult daughter bought one for her.... it took mant tries before we finally were able to propoagate it... I brought it home (third try) and it was thriving for a couple years... I decided to move clear across the country and left it with my sister to keep safe for me until I could come back and get it. Soon after I had moved, a stray, pregnant cat decdided my sister was a safe place to have her litter... when her babies started to explore the world... the plant was their favorite thing to play with. Needless to say... I am once again, looking for the plant.... I am on the gulf coast of Florida (Sarasota) if anyone knows where I could find one local to me! Thanks in advance.
