Great ideas! Thank you, Robbie. We were at 114 for the last couple of days in LA, CA. Thankfully I have shaded areas where the hummingbirds like to rest. The feeders are in the shade also. There were 30 or more hummingbirds sitting on my vines the last two days. I could see them panting and only flying to the feeders for a quick drink, then back to the vines. I made sure they had plenty of fresh nectar and lots of cool water in the bird baths throughout the day. I kept adding ice to the bird baths. The heat finally broke this morning. The hummingbirds were so happy flying around as I watered my garden. I set the hose to the mist setting, and they would fly through it as I pointed the hose up in the air. We went down to 93 degrees today, and the birds were much happier and livelier.

I put a mister on the end of my hose. Then stick it in a tree, a bush, draped on your sheppards hook, a fence, trellis, whatever, and turn it on. It’s only a mist, so it doesn’t use a lot of water and they love ❤️ it.

I appreciate all you do for the birds, Robbie and Gary. I’ve been able to grow more vegetables than ever before by using the large containers you use. I wasn’t able to garden anymore since 2012 after 6 spinal fusions. Not enough strength to dig up a garden. The containers worked so well. Thank you for teaching me that too. You have such a loving heart, and I love the dedication you have for the birds. ❤️

I have major spinal issues too and miss my gardening. I was never green fingered but had managed to get some plants growing and have wanted for so long to grow my own veg. But I can barely walk down my garden as it's so uneven. I'm gonna have to try the containers too. I have several of the big plastic storage tubs lying idle since co-vid declutter. Your comment reminded me to get to it. I hope your spine doesn't give you too much problems. It's so horrible when the back plays up and when doctors don't take you seriously for years - that's been my issue. I'm now barely able to walk anymore but I have finally got a diagnosis. Had to go to another country to get it and the outlook isn't great. I've been told in layman's terms (couldn't understand the medical terms) one good sneeze could end me as a quadriplegic. May have to get spinal fusion done too. Was it difficult to go through and what was your healing time if you don't mind me asking?

I am going to put together another one, soon or by Spring, I just love it, so easy to maintain and work with, I am even working on another video on more thoughts on this garden too. And oh yes, I just love the birds and glad they found my chair garden too, take care, Love Robbie

You guys are the best. I was so worried about my hummers last winter since they didn't leave. I was afraid they would die with the snow & freezing temps, but with trial & error & your tips they made it!! I now have 2 babies added to their household. I absolutely adore them. I never get tired of their antics. We have a heatwave going on in Idaho too. Air quality is bad also. I am going to follow your heatwave tips too. I have learned so much from you, and your live chat last winter really eased my mind. Thank you both for all the important things you teach us about our tiniest friends, ♡Patty

@bk078 You can buy them on Amazon. There's a site on Facebook called, Idaho Birding. Some good info there. It's a little colder where I live so they don't winter here. The heaters fit on the bottom of the feeder. Search around. Hope this helps. I adore those tiny birds. They poke around in my flowers during the summer.

God bless you Robbie for taking care of the hummingbirds. The only way we kept our wildlife alive in very hot summer was to put a fine spray sprinkler under the trees and the birds kept going in the spray. Saved the chooks as well. Careful of the smoke we had bushfires last year here in Australia and I used to put a wet towel over my face to go out into the yard but some months later I ended up in hospital with a dark patch on my lung. It’s gone now but I think it was from the smoke

I also put trumpet vines in pots by the feeders where there in the shade and they eat from those the smoke is also been in my area for about 2 weeks that has caused it to become cooler due too the smoke blocks the sun. So that part was good.we all try to figure out ways to help the wild life around us I'm glad you take the time to share to make folks aware and things to do to Help you have very good. Brilliant - we have the more decorated glass containers but we also have these cute little mini ice trays. I'm going to freeze some cubets that will easily fit in the bottles and follow your instructions. We may have lost some in the heat yesterday but I'll do my best to help them out through the 90 purge. Thank you again for all your help.

Hi Robbie, I am in Murrieta and was worried about my hummingbirds as well. I put some hummingbird food in ice trays and put a few frozen cubes in their feeders to help keep their food cool. It was sooo hot on Saturday...it is supposed to get hot this weekend, but thankfully not the 118 we had on Saturday. We have ash all over our yard as well...stay cool!!

I see others have suggested misters or water sprinklers and that is so helpful for cooling off the little ones. Remember when you were watering that plant off your deck and they were enjoying the water and bath? I know it will increase your water bill, but you don't have to run it all day, just in the heat of the day. It will also help to keep all the birds clean from the falling ashes.

We are in Central British Columbia, Canada. Our Hummingbirds are all pretty much gone, just a few still coming in from farther up North. Hope and Prayers are sent your way, for the heat wave and Fires to be gone soon! It's warm here, about 30 degrees Celsius, and cool during the night.

The CA situation is really scary. It’s 95/ 100 F down here all summer but not 112! (We grow sugar, there’s plenty! It likes the heat) Perhaps dry ice in a shady place could create a cooler zone? Dropping the temp a few degrees could help enormously. Bless y’all for aiding these little birds.

Maybe a water mister up by the feeders by the window? I give them a wee be more water in the feeding solution so they have more water, but I’m in Northern California. Good idea of the frozen food and ziplock baggies with ice cubes. Prayers for all the little critters.

I use misters in Las Vegas above the feeders. It drips down the branches and makes mini rain forests.

In Palm Spring I had 2 fountains going all summer long. The hummers sat on the top tier in the water. They would drink water constantly. The feeder food gives them the energy they need to look for knats and pollen the food they rely on. So...They need just plain water too! Hello to everyone! 💜

I love this video. Thank you for being so nice to these birds. 115° is par for the course for the summer in my area. In my experience, taking care of the feeders requires just a bit more work when it gets this hot: changing the nectar and cleaning more times per day. A lot of nectar goes down the sink, unfortunately, but at least the birds are happy. Like you, I also use ice and they love it. I also take feeders out of the sun. They don’t like that, but it is better than the birds getting burnt feet or tongues. They are resilient survivors. It just amazes me how nice your birds are with each other. I have Anna’s, Costa’s, and black-chins were I live. The dominant Anna’s and Costa’s are aggressive+++. The sky over my yard looks like the Battle of Britain by 6:00 PM. I feel so bad for the little ones who get chased away.

Birds cool through their feet also like chickens so if you spray areas on the ground where they would walk that will help cool them. I've been letting the bottom of my chicken coop so that they are forced to walk on damp ground during the hottest part of the day lately here in Arizona. I do notice their wings held out away from their bodies and their little beaks open panting so I know they're hot and suffering I also put a shallow pan of water in the shade in their coop and sprinkled in mealworms so they have to get in there to eat them which they do instantly which makes their feet get wet. Just some suggestions for our bird friends
