How to Juggle 4 Balls

Ойын-сауық

My name is Jesse Joyner and I am a professional juggler who also teaches how-to-juggle workshops. In this video, I'll show you some simple steps that will help you make the jump from juggling three balls to juggling four balls!
Note: At about the 20 second mark (and again towards the end), I say that its not that hard to go from three to four. Allow me to correct myself. It IS hard. I think what I meant is that it is an easier jump to make than the jump from four to five, but first time learners of four don't care about that. Time frames to go from 3 to 4 can vary wildly from person to person. It took me about 2 months of practice to go from 3 to 4 (my memory tells me it was about 30 minutes to an hour each of those days). Others might get it faster or slower than that, which is totally fine. Go at your own pace. Please don't give up if you think it is taking you a long time. Thanks for those who gave me feedback about that. Please reach out in the comments if you have specific questions that I can help you with.

    I learnt 4 balls a few months ago but this popped up so I watched it anyway. Nice tutorial😁 Only thing I would have added is some realistic time frames for people so that new learners can manage their expectations and not get discouraged with progress. For example it took me 4 weeks to get 50 catches...it took my friend 2 months...we both practised pretty much daily together for at least an hour...sometimes a lot more😁 Some people may watch this and think they can learn this in a day or two...then give up prematurely. Just my 2 cents. Keep juggling folks...best fun ever😁

    I appreciate the feedback and thanks for watching. You're right that we don't want to turn people away if they can't get it in a day or two. If I make another 4-ball video someday, I will be more clear about that. In the meantime, I have edited the video description to reflect the point you're making (and others have chimed in about this too). Again, thanks for the feedback and happy juggling to you as well!

    Keep up the good work! Remember that the throws are more important than the catches. Whichever ball it is that you tend to cross, focus on throwing it in the right direction and forget about catching anything when you do so.

    badre, the best tip on 4 balls is to practice with the hands synchronized first and then work towards asynchronized. I find it easiest for the pattern to move in an outward moving fountain (so the right hand juggles two balls in a clockwise pattern and the left hand juggles a counter-clockwise pattern of the two).

    Not yet, but those would be some good videos to work on. I've always liked 5 rings better than 5 clubs because the rings are so narrow and don't collide the way clubs do. With 5 clubs, the standard pattern is a cascade with double flips on each throw. It takes a lot of time, practice, and patience.

  • @JesseJoyner

    @JesseJoyner

    6 жыл бұрын

    Ryan, getting throws consistent comes with time and patience. Remember, the throws are more important than the catches, so don't worry about catching all the time. Just think about where you are throwing the balls, even if they all fall. It also helps me to count while I juggle (even when I was learning). Just count your catches and it helps you develop a rhythm. Keep up the great work!

    If you think about it, there’s a two to one ratio when juggling 2 balls. When juggling 3 balls, there’s a 3 to 2 ratio. Mathematically, two should be harder than 3.

    Thanks for watching DavidGan. All I can say is keep going. You got this. Some tips include throwing the balls a little higher than you're used to throwing them (gives your brain more time to learn the muscle memory) and also take what I call "brain breaks" every 15 minutes of practice. Let's say you practice for 15 minutes. I'd recommend taking a 5 minute break after that to get your mind off the juggling. Then pick it up again for another 15 minutes or so.

  • @JesseJoyner

    @JesseJoyner

    5 жыл бұрын

    I started around age 11. It's never too late to be an awesome juggler. You got this! With five, you want medium weight (not too light and not too heavy). So go for something smaller than a baseball but bigger than a golf ball and make sure it doesn't bounce (so that leaves beanbags or hacky sacks). Here's an example from my website store (you don't have to buy this one, just giving you an idea for the size and look): squareup.com/market/jesse-joyner-juggling/ball

  • @JesseJoyner

    @JesseJoyner

    5 жыл бұрын

    you're well on your way swagata! Good job. If you get 5 catches in synchronous, then that's 10 catches total and you have officially juggled 4 balls (you need a minimum of 8 catches to qualify as a juggle). Again, let your strong hand teach your weak hand. And make sure your throws are medium height (not too high and not too low). A good height is the height of how high the tops of your fingers reach when you raise your hand. However high your hand can reach, that's about as high as you want to throw the balls.

    Jared, thanks for watching. No, I believe 4 is harder than 3. At least it was in my experience. It's not a lot harder (compared to the jump from 4 to 5), but it does take a little more effort/practice to train your brain to keep 4 in the air versus keeping 3 in the air. The jump from 3 to 4 is easier than the jump from 4 to 5. The jump from 4 to 5 takes a LOT of practice.

    It's not fair Jesse and will dishearten people making them think they are slow learners. It's about ten times harder for most people. By which I mean it takes ten times as long to get a smooth 4 ball fountain than a smooth 3 ball cascade.

    Romazho It's impossible with an even number of balls, as they will collide if your throws are "perfect" (same height and speed). There is however a way to make them cross, but you need to throw the balls twice in a row from each hand which is a bit more challenging.

    Try the animation in libraryofjuggling.com/Tricks/5balltricks/FiveBallCascade.html. the 4 ball cross is given as intermediate step. I am also working on it as i find 4 ball non-cross as cheating myself, in a lighter way ;-)

    I think what’s misleading is folks saying it takes them 4, 8, 20 hrs to juggle 4 balls. The reality is it takes months. Giving people false hope discourages them from continuing and giving up after a short time

  • @JesseJoyner

    @JesseJoyner

    Yes i agree. A small percentage of people may learn quickly but for most it takes longer and false hope is no help. I made this video many years ago and I would word my statements differently today. It took me about 2 months to get four down. I would say to all to press on and don’t give up.

    I learnt 3 ball juggling in 2 weeks last year and from then I am struggling with 4 balls.It is not easy as non dominating hand is not easy to be taught.

  • @JesseJoyner

    @JesseJoyner

    Abhishek, don't give up too soon. Four balls can take a while to learn. It's a big jump to go from three to four (I used to think otherwise, but it really is a bigger step than I originally thought). Spend extra time on your non-dominant hand - just working on two in that hand by itself. When you get better at it, try both hands simultaneously and tell your non-dominant hand to mirror your dominant hand (in your brain).

    I learned the 3-ball cascade pretty quickly - in about 30 minutes. I've been practicing with 4 balls now for over a week, and I'm still terrible. Any tips? Thanks

    Work on one hand at a time first - juggling two. Then move on to juggling them in synchronous columns. And tell your brain to make your subordinate hand do what the dominant hand is doing.

    Ryan, I'm so sorry about your frustrations. Don't give up! You want to find a medium weighted ball (not to light and not too heavy). You can actually convert tennis balls into homemade juggling balls if you slit a hole in them with a knife (carefully), fill them with rice or beans, and then tape them up with duct tape, electrical tape, or balloons. I've dropped thousands of times in my practicing over the years. You can do it!

    It is wrong to say that juggling with 4 or 5 "is not much harder than juggling 3 balls". Only pro jugglers that have years of training say it, which proves it's both wrong and dishonest :p Everyone can learn 3 balls in half a day, but I've never seen anyone succeeding with 4 in less than, at least, a few weeks. I think it is not very helpful (the opposite, actually) for beginners to let them think they will learn with more than 3 balls as quickly as they did with 3.

    People will get a complex and quickly start to think well if it's not much harder than 3 why have I been trying for a week and still struggling. Then they will simply give up altogether. One more juggler lost which is actually very sad!

    I appreciate the feedback from you and others. I edited the summary to correct myself. You all are right, and I don't want to lose any budding jugglers over this either! If I ever re-do this video, I'll drop that comment altogether and point out the difficulty from three to four.

    You and some others have given me the same feedback. And it's a fair critique of what I said in the video. I should correct myself and say that it is indeed a big and difficult step to go from three to four. When I originally made this video years ago, I think what I meant when I said that was that compared to the jump from four to five (which is enormous), the jump from three to four seems relatively easy in retrospect (but first-time learners of 4 are not thinking that, of course). I'll edit the summary and make a note on the video to reflect this correction.

  • @jungliatpil9124

    Okay it's simplistic but let's be realistic, on a scale of difficulty or time taken to get a smooth pattern for a minute or so. I've been through it and this is how it went for me. 3 balls = 1 4 balls = 10 5 balls = 500 That means that learning to do a nice 5 ball cascade is 500 times more difficult than a 3 ball cascade (for ''most' people) Agree? Jesse or anybody?

  • @JesseJoyner

    @JesseJoyner

    7 жыл бұрын

    It would be different for everyone, but that's certainly a realistic scale when prepping learners for how hard each step will be. For me, it took two weeks to get a smooth 3-ball cascade and then 2 years to get a smooth 5-ball cascade (and that was two years of A LOT of practice). Unfortunately, it was so long ago that I don't remember the time frame it took me to get a smooth 4-ball juggle.

    That's a legit question, Hunter. It does look crazy, I know. They simply show up big and bright in the video so the visual is best for the lesson. I would certainly not recommend people use softballs to learn four balls. You're right that beanbags are best.
