Rat hirecracy is usually decided by attitude willingness to win and spunk not sheer size or strength Its not unusual to see a smaller rat take command of a pack I mean cape is blind and you don't see her have any issue being on the top. Tho admittedly blindness is not much of an issue for rats

I've gone back and forth and back and forth on the main two introduction methods, "neutral area" / "carrier", so much, these are basically my conclusions after having had 8 rats total so far as a new owner: Neutral area Pros - Easier to stop full-on bitey attacks if they happen to happen, which is something to always be prepared for - one vet said they saw a rat had 1 eye lost due to an introduction fight ouchie :( - The rats might be less stressed out if they are given the freedom to roam around the neutral area Cons - Rats may end up ignoring each other altogether and introductions may take forever and ever and ever - Rats might try to jump out of neutral area, especially the young ones who are very spry Carrier method Pros - Rats really can't ignore each other, so they WILL deal with each other, so the introductions progress much faster (for better or for worse) - Personally, shorter amount of time spent in this introduction time meant less stress for me and the rats, in my personal opinion Cons - Can't easily get in there to stop full-on bitey attacks if they happen to happen - Thus some rat keepers don't recommend it Facebook group for rat keepers I'm in swears by the neutral method up and down, but I tried people I really really really tried. I did every single tip the veterans gave me, and it didn't work. It ended up in so much extra stress and awfulness. At the end of the day, YOU are the only one who is with your rats every day, YOU will have to make the call on what method is right for you and for the rats in question.

Oh right so, anyway I ended up doing something like what you did here. :) I did a short time in a neutral area, the bathtub, and then the majority of the rest of the process with carrier method, slowly going from smallest carrier size to the big cage. 1. in the bathrub, "neutral area" 2. Tiniest carrier I have 3. Small hospiral cage - Meanwhile, I deep-clean the main cage completely and as thoroughly as I can to remove all the original rats' smells - 4. Cut off half of the main cage, "half cage" setup 5. FINALLY, main cage

There are too many intangibles that people don't realize that they influence, which is why you are correct about people needing to focus on their autonomy to find what works. I get big feelings when people advise newcomers that there is only the *One™* method to do.

It just depends. My two girl rats were lovable to each other from the start. Rabbits have similar dynamics to rats and I've had some that are extremely chill and won't even fight back (yet still wound up being the dominant one I think from sheer cuddle power) and just want to be friends and others that will actively rip each other's fur out on the first meeting. As long as you watched them closely during the meeting, you're good. Glad yours worked out.

@@CreativityNull Yes I had the cage they were in right next to me on my bed. I put them in my “time out” cage so they met on neutral ground. Then when I saw that they were getting along I put them in their big cage and they continued to get along, and they still do to this day! 😊

I mean, individual group dynamics are different from all the other peer groups. Most humans don't fit right into a new group where besties have already been drawn, but it does happen. Your new boys' vibe matched the old boys' vibe. I wouldn't read too much into universal rat law, and just take it as a compliment that you made an environment with good factors that we will likely never be able to fully catalog.

It can get nasty even if quickly resolved, when first introducing one older rat to two baby sisters my older rat fought them both (pulling out a good chunk of fur from one little lady) so I seperated them with the two in their cage and older lady running around the room, about an hour later reintroduced them and it was civil, by the end of the day they were super chill, one of the little ones really really latched onto her, pretty much shadowing her around the room, but yeah definitely needed to be a supervised introduction

I've introduced rats twice in total, first time happened completely accidentally (we had them in separate cages but the two baby rats were so tiny they squeezed through cage's wires super easily and joined the other older rat. Surprisingly it went well, and all were happy, so we just let them be. The second introduction was a hell on earth because we were introducing a rat kept lonely and with cats his entire life to two adult rats. So it's three male rats totally panicking seeing each other and yelling at much as they could. Neutral ground didn't go well as they were scared as heck, but carrier method + scaring the rats a bit so they wouldn't be constantly thinking about fighting did the trick.

My favorite introductions to do are multiple new rats at a time. That way the new ones already have a built-in support rat and the established rats still have the safety of homefield advantage. It is a good playing field equalizer. I have only had infrequent squabbles. Usually just a momentary ego trip.

I have done a lot of rescues in the past. When you get the big old boys it is hard to get them to get along. I always had to be really careful, because they can do severe damage with one bad bite. I ended up with a lot of elderly males and they are very set in the behaviors. Was challenging and rewarding to get them stable homes to live out their lives happily.

It's hard, but (if I understand you properly) you fostered ratties from bad, maladaptive situations. You set them up for future prosperity. Unlearning habits forged in trauma or neglect is difficult, yet you gave them the power to heal with new, healthier rat families. You did well.

Funny I should find this about introducing rats into the pack. I have a story: So I promised everyone (including myself) that i wasn't getting anymore rats.....but today I was at the local reptile shop buying crickets for my leopard gecko and my army of toads.....when this bratty a-- kid and his dad come in to dump the kid's pet rat (no idea why they want the little guy gone) but..... the reptile shop only carries rodents for feeders and the kid was super excited to see his former little buddy become devoured by a carpet python......I couldn't stand it....the rat was tame and young and clean.....not a gross greasy feeder with a bad attitude like the dude at my house Jack (the Ripper).... I've said this probably 1billion times but I'll say it again: Jack is a grouchy old murderer but my friend yeeted him on me so he's my responsibility now. Right now the two boys are separated but I'm hoping Jack is too elderly now to take down another cage mate....but when they are together I watch them very carefully. Best case scenario they become friendos and all is well..... they say rats are social creatures that aren't really happy unless they have a cage mate..... but Jack has really challenged that as a solid concept for me 🙄
