I've gone back and forth and back and forth on the main two introduction methods, "neutral area" / "carrier", so much, these are basically my conclusions after having had 8 rats total so far as a new owner: Neutral area Pros - Easier to stop full-on bitey attacks if they happen to happen, which is something to always be prepared for - one vet said they saw a rat had 1 eye lost due to an introduction fight ouchie :( - The rats might be less stressed out if they are given the freedom to roam around the neutral area Cons - Rats may end up ignoring each other altogether and introductions may take forever and ever and ever - Rats might try to jump out of neutral area, especially the young ones who are very spry Carrier method Pros - Rats really can't ignore each other, so they WILL deal with each other, so the introductions progress much faster (for better or for worse) - Personally, shorter amount of time spent in this introduction time meant less stress for me and the rats, in my personal opinion Cons - Can't easily get in there to stop full-on bitey attacks if they happen to happen - Thus some rat keepers don't recommend it Facebook group for rat keepers I'm in swears by the neutral method up and down, but I tried people I really really really tried. I did every single tip the veterans gave me, and it didn't work. It ended up in so much extra stress and awfulness. At the end of the day, YOU are the only one who is with your rats every day, YOU will have to make the call on what method is right for you and for the rats in question.

Oh right so, anyway I ended up doing something like what you did here. :) I did a short time in a neutral area, the bathtub, and then the majority of the rest of the process with carrier method, slowly going from smallest carrier size to the big cage. 1. in the bathrub, "neutral area" 2. Tiniest carrier I have 3. Small hospiral cage - Meanwhile, I deep-clean the main cage completely and as thoroughly as I can to remove all the original rats' smells - 4. Surprisingly it went well, and all were happy, so we just let them be. The second introduction was a hell on earth because we were introducing a rat kept lonely and with cats his entire life to two adult rats. So it's three male rats totally panicking seeing each other and yelling at much as they could. My favorite introductions to do are multiple new rats at a time. That way the new ones already have a built-in support rat and the established rats still have the safety of homefield advantage. It is a good playing field equalizer. I have only had infrequent squabbles. Usually just a momentary ego trip.

I have done a lot of rescues in the past. When you get the big old boys it is hard to get them to get along. I always had to be really careful, because they can do severe damage with one bad bite. I ended up with a lot of elderly males and they are very set in the behaviors. Was challenging and rewarding to get them stable homes to live out their lives happily.

It's hard, but (if I understand you properly) you fostered ratties from bad, maladaptive situations. You set them up for future prosperity. Unlearning habits forged in trauma or neglect is difficult, yet you gave them the power to heal with new, healthier rat families. You did well.

Funny I should find this about introducing rats into the pack. I have a story: So I promised everyone (including myself) that i wasn't getting anymore rats.....but today I was at the local reptile shop buying crickets for my leopard gecko and my army of toads.....when this bratty a-- kid and his dad come in to dump the kid's pet rat (no idea why they want the little guy gone) but..... the reptile shop only carries rodents for feeders and the kid was super excited to see his former little buddy become devoured by a carpet python......I couldn't stand it....the rat was tame and young and clean.....not a gross greasy feeder with a bad attitude like the dude at my house Jack (the Ripper).... I've said this probably 1billion times but I'll say it again: Jack is a grouchy old murderer but my friend yeeted him on me so he's my responsibility now. Right now the two boys are separated but I'm hoping Jack is too elderly now to take down another cage mate....but when they are together I watch them very carefully. Best case scenario they become friendos and all is well..... they say rats are social creatures that aren't really happy unless they have a cage mate..... but Jack has really challenged that as a solid concept for me 🙄

@@IceHibiscus Thank you for your kind words. I loved doing it while I could. My new apartment does not allow any rodent type pets. I still coordinate some rescues and there are some others who do the fostering and adoptions.
aww yeah potato time
You were right about cin not having a competitive bone in her body lol
I love your rats and I am living vicariously through your vids cause I cant have rats rn.
I wonder what the dominance line up will be well this is all done with. Imagine baby cyclone ends up on top, that would be so funny 😂
I was extremely lucky the other week, bought two new boys, one was a year old the other a few months younger (They were surrendered to the local pet shop). I bought them on the Saturday & by Monday night they were happily living in the same cage as my other 3 boys... Very lucky the introductions went very well & they got along very quickly...
You're hilarious please don't burn yourself out I love your videos
me meeting new people be like:
Ratty kisses to you all!
I love your rattykins they're so adorable!
2 hours? 😂 I respect that level of stubbornness
So smol and sweet!!
I got lucky. My boys were from the same batch of feeders but not related so when I got them their beef was pretty much sorted but they still formed strong bonds with me.
Love your rats!
This is so fun to watch (especially because I can’t get a pet rat)
Omg that song was so hilarious with their fights
Dw bro ADHD helps out so much with soft soft i find. day dreaming always gives new ideas so when i snap back i got that vision ready
The new one is adorable:3
Lol capes pissed face is just like my last rats 😂
Im going to have to get a couple more babies in a few months, these videos were super helpful and informative. I like how you used both methods, that feels right to me.
very good to see all the ratties looking well, thanks for the video, be well all
Eeeeey that's great! I'm glad Cyclone is doing fine interacting with Cyn and Cape.
I love them
I await the day Cyclone challenges Cape for the throne
Thank you so much for these videos. I just adopted a baby dumbo rat and had no idea how to introduce her to my 1.5 year old girls(3 sisters)
Rats do some baba grilling fights
Tysm im getting dumbos for my bday and its close so and i have fancy
Cyclone is adorable and I'm glad to see that the three chaos potatoes are getting along. Though I do find some amusement in the fact that cin is the blind one, yet the two chaos potatoes with great eyesight are lower in hierarchy.
Always get TWO babies, never one.
Funny dogs
as a proud owner of 15 rats 4 of them are babies we put them into the cage and they only snifed at their buts and never fought for alpha. the alpha is to lazy to even fight so he just sniffs and walks away, tho gotta say having 15 rats is expensive but its so worth it for some chaos potatoes
I have a friend with pet rats and she told me about this one rat she had that just liked to scratch and bite at everything. Every fucking thing. She wasn't out for blood and didn't hurt the other rats, but my friend was still nervous introducing a new rat to the pack. The little shit got pinned down and bodied by this new rat that was like, several months younger than her. Bastard who gnaws through newly bought toys is at the bottom of the food chain. Impeccable.
I love rats
Very good video
1:03 literally me and my friend fighting for a spot
I am loving these videos. Rats are definitely not the pet for me. But i love watching yours. No shade meant, i just dont have the time to dedicate to be a good pet rat owner. But love watching your videos and learning new things. Keep up the awesome work.
THE TAIL WIGGLE
What about my goodbye rattie kisses 😢🥺👉👈
I can't believe that Cyclone won against Cin
I feel like Cin is the lowest on the hierarchy, after fighting with cyclone-
My rats where cell mates in the pet store so they where bestie from the start
I just put the new rat in the cage with my old rats right off the bat with no introduction.
My rat habitat is a cage, but it's huge and divided. My one male is a jerk! We are 2x2, with frustration. It's been a year of this shit. Working on peace.
loveit
Both Cape and Cyclone bully poor Cin
When I introduced mocha to Carter it only took 5 minutes because carter was only 2 months old so they because used to eachother quickly when I put them both I the bathtub with some treats
I don't even want rats. I'm just way too invested in their story.
What products do you use to clean up around your rats?
We're trying to introduce our young Degu with our older ones and I wish they were as chill as your rats. I got bit tryna break up a ball of death a coupleweeks ago. They get alone for about half an hour and then a WWE style melee begins. Its rather frustrating.
Cutie Potatoes!
Can I just ask, how do you know when to intervene when they fight, like how can you tell when it's a play fight or when things will get nasty
Heyyy i just wanted to ask is this ur channel or is freindlyRatsCapeandCin ur channel?
Awwwww
Friendly reminder to NOT use the carrier method with intact boys. It is very dangerous. Especially for a first meeting or if things aren't going well with other methods
cin really just got beat by a little kid
Best case scenario they become friendos and all is well..... they say rats are social creatures that aren't really happy unless they have a cage mate..... but Jack has really challenged that as a solid concept for me 🙄
Cin is getting beat up by a BABY!?
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
My aunt has kankles
Rats are so cute and I wish I could have them but unfortunately my cat is a killer
You're welcome 😁
