How to Introduce Puppies to Dogs

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Introducing two dogs is not always as easy as it seems. The important thing is that the meting be overwhelmingly positive. A negative experience, especially for a puppy, can have life-long implications. I take introducing two dogs very seriously.
In this video, I address the important aspects and how I do it. I focus mainly on Siggy, the Malinois puppy meeting, Max, the Akita, then Jimi my Labrador retriever and finally Goofy, my 11 year old Belgian Malinois. Pay attention to the different ways that Siggy reacts to each dog. This is what you want to watch out for when your dog meets another dog. Notice that neither of my dogs did anything that could be seen as negative to him. That makes for a good experience.

My dog is a year old but he's almost all grown up and I need to keep in mind that he's still a puppy and that I have many years ahead of me to make him even more perfect. The exercice you showed is also a great thing for managing the frustration

Fabulous demonstration of how it should be done, very useful. Notice how RC guides all the dogs and handlers, and he's alweads ahead of them - like a proper ringmanster. Always impressive to see Goofy & RC demonstrate, arguably more impressie to see IGP grade obidenece skills in a real world scenario like this helping the Malionis pup than in pure competiton. and the Goof-meister always looks so happy and biddable. Masterclass.

When I take my ferrets in walks and people's dogs run up, I pick the ferret up calmly and present its butt to the dog. This has never ever gone badly, the dog gets a good sniff and say friends regardless if they know each other and if I read the excitment levels too high the ferret stays on shoulder. Normally the dog just wants a good sniff and the calms down once they are given permission to check it out safley. This gives merit to the butt first method with animals that normally would be exciting a prey drive. This is deff a safe way to intro dogs.

So important to keep introductions really short to start with. I say a count of 3, no more. My girl has no interest in other dogs and the only 2 times she's growled was at a bad mannered puppy trying to get in her face in a highly excited way. She is great with well mannered pups but will not engage in play no matter how hard a pup might try. An excellent neutral dog to walk excitable pups with. Thanks Robert. Just love little Siggy : )

Keep in mind as soon as the Akita hits 10-18 months he will be same sex aggressive. No amount of training or socialization by any trainer will be able to change that. It is genetic in Akitas. They are a primitive dog breed and cannot be expected to be behave like a modern domesticated dog such as GSD. The breed is ~6000 years old. You may find an outlier but there are few and far between. If you repeated this exact test in a year you would have a dog fight on your hands. Props to Robert for understanding this is a difficult breed.

My neighbors had an Akita that used to play with my other neighbors’ Lab, German Shorthair Pointer, and Golden Retriever. They were all males. The lab was intact as was the shorthair. The other two were neutered. They were hysterical together and could play til they all dropped.

Just go really slow and be picky on which dogs they can meet if they do. It's okay if your dog doesn't interact with others. You can always do lots of obedience drills and slowly move closer to other dogs as the focus is maintained. (You can try exposure work with dogs on TV and marking when they are calm and collected before moving to live dogs at a distance.) Best wishes💖

A muzzle (during a walk/anytime they'll be near a dog) seems to be a great and fair tool to keep the dogs safe. Distance from other dogs is probably the first tool to use though. When all the dogs are safe and yours is not too anxious (aggressive), engagement/training can reinforce the behavior of ignoring the other dogs.

@@LLewis-vu9qf I know, but your dog should know when something is not ok. Mine used to be very curious and run to other dogs like crazy, I just correct him whenever he run on a dog and then I keep his attention on to me. Do that everyday for a few weeks and it'll get better. I think the same pattern can be done in the op case.

That guy with the black chow looking dog needs to relearn basic communication with his dog, probably before all these meetings. For instance, when siggy met jimmy and the owner tried to call him back, he didn’t clearly mark the behavior. No differentiation between what “good” and “yes” means. Important and basic stuff

The trainer here is like the scientific problem of measuring. You can't observe and measure without effecting the result. If the puppy was being introduced to the older dog by 2 people the older dog lived with, it would have went a bit different. The trainer is running the show here. The owner seems meek and obedient. Honestly, the mask is not helping.
