Been doing a lot of investigation into matten filters. This looks like a great alternative for a display tank. For anyone on the fence on Joeys book. It comes highly recommended. The amount of amazing knowledge in the book is invaluable. Thanks for the great content Joey 🙏
"the macgyver of the aquarium building" u can tell from watching his videos he is a very innovative and creative individual, his passion is his success.
Great as always! But you need to get setup with Amazon and when we buy from your Link you get paid... Your missing out on easy money
Love the sponge filter set-up. It's cost efficient and simple to install. Great job Joey.
This is one of my favorite DIY filters you’ve shown yet. Simple but very effective. I’m thinking of setting up a 125gal and do 3 of these. A half round in the middle then one in each of the back corners. Stuffing a lot of bio media behind them.
This is an awesome build. With some tweaking to the actual build we could gear this idea towards making a normal tank "reef ready"
Been watching your DIY videos and I would say that this is one of my favorite, I have DIY canister filter and I am planning to use it to make 3 of this Internal aquarium sump. Thank you so much Joe, I really appreciated this video.
Maybe instead of a bucket, a large plastic flower pot or a trash can, since those are more common in black.

I'm always amazed to see thumbs down. Must be too old to understand KZread etiquette. Thanks for all of these DIY videos. About to setup a 250 gallon inside pond for my RES and cannot begin to estimate the amount of money you've saved me.

+Drexel Haden Awesome! Glad to have been a part.
Excellent tutorial! I have used this same set up - minus the plastic bucket - for my 125g aquarium. I did a standard Hamburg Mattenfilter and used Koralia pumps in opposing corners for flow, and added Matrix in bags behind the foam. It was a great space for hiding the heater too. I had a sensible bioload of fish and it worked beautifully, even for such a large tank. I have since moved and I'm getting ready to set the 125g up again, and I will incorporate acrylic instead of a bucket just because I need the added size. (I may even chose to cordon off part of the back of the tank and make baffles) Your comment of the plastic preventing fish from getting behind the area while rinsing the foam is worth it's weight in gold - just try herding fish in a tank that size! lol Thanks for the wonderful vid...
I always wanted to do something like this for my oscars as a easier way to give the tank a boast to filtration as always you are the king of diy love the videos from scotland much love.
Dude I am gonna get your book, I have watched some pile of these videos now I would be happy to support it. Cheers man you e helped us out of a few jams when it comes to the hobby haha
Dude that's such a sweet, simple filtration setup. 👍
What a great concept. Gives me an idea for an internal wet/dry
Eres un grande, saludos y muchos exitos hermano, un abrazo desde México!
I got your book today, awesome! I will be surprised if it's not a New York best seller keep doing what you do
another awesome video! keep them coming man we need more!!
Brilliant idea of simplifying filter , pump , heater . surprising so low likes for such a good idea !
I really enjoyed this video! Glad I found it! Thanks!
This is a very very good idea, I had been looking for this kind of idea for a long time.
the diy master! Informative videos! running the led super build and now i'll upgrade to a bigger tank to use this filter in lieu of my h.o.b that can potentially flood the house!
This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you Joey

Nice, clear instructional video!
Wow great idea love this im definitely going this direction
Hi Joey - many thanks for another interesting video :) Since seeing Rachel O'Leary's modified manifold hill stream videos with the poret foam corner matten filter I've been thinking about doing one of these myself. I think you could improve on this design by just cutting four large rectangular holes in the bucket leaving a cross shape of plastic as a brace and to support the powerhead's return nozzle. This would mean you'd get more even flow through a much larger volume of foam than if the water's just being sucked through holes, also making it much less likely to clog. I think you'd probably need slightly thicker foam for this to work well - probably 2" would work. The main reason I like this idea is that the beauty of matten filters is that the exposed sponge offers fry, inverts and smaller fish a large surface to graze on all kinds of microscopic critters, which wouldn't happen so much with the "lots of small holes" approach. The weakness of what I'm suggesting and a great strength of yours is that the holey plastic retains the division between tank and "sump" areas when the sponge is removed. However I think that's easily solved by taking another quarter of the bucket and leaving it smooth and complete - then just slide it down between the brace and the foam before the foam is removed for cleaning. Actually there'd be no real reason not to use something like 2 to 4mm acrylic in place of the cut up bucket, it might cost a bit more - but then you could buy whatever colour you liked and not have to bother to spray paint it. cheers :)
i see this as also being a top corner tank for those who don't want to take it the whole way to the bottom of the tank. It would require you to keep the bottom of the bucket on when cutting it up but i think it would look really nice and serve will for people with small tanks to manage
Great idea and very inexpensive. Too bad the likes aren't alot more. You have made life easier for alot of us fish lovers. You are the man. Thanks
this is pretty much what i am planning, your the man!
Excellent and simple to implement. i have to share this one. .
Awesome as always Joey, I'd guess you could go one step further and silicone two pieces of bucket about 2" apart (innermost first) put the sponge in between them and fill the inside with pot scrubbies, lava rock, bio balls, etc along with the pump for even more beneficial bacteria. This would help from possible recycling when cleaning the sponge.

Very informative video....I liked it so much that I will redo my hospital tank and put this filter in it for convenience and ease of maintenance . I have a 30 gallon long. I think that if I paint the back of the aquarium black and the filter black also it will pop ! and with the foam I could even keep fry in it etc. So many possibilities.....THANK YOU
Great video!helpful.
Sweet deal on other filter brother. great job.
This is def one of my favorite vids you have put out recently I really like this build and will be using it when i get some of my extra tanks back up and running. can you post the link or the description for finding that type of sponge on Amazon? Thank you for sharing the awesome knowledge!!!
love the video m8 great idea as usual
this is awesome.. makes me want to find a place for an aquarium again
thats an awesome build.
Good video and I’ll send an early congratulations on 500k subscribers.😉
great video very helpful
Thanks! Nice vid as always. I've used this kind of sponge before. When I pull it out for washing, a large amount of gunk trapped on the sponge falls off, making a mess of the water :(

great vídeo
Thanks for posting this. Im going to be building one of these for/with my nieces. Could you link the foam that you used? Awesome vid!
I have something like this, and have the external filter sucking water out of there. Like a huge pre-filter to the external filter. Best of both worlds. Keeps the babies out of the filter intake, and adds MOAR FILTER.
Joey this is a great video the project is amazing just wish you gave a look at the backside of the tank in operation although I can imagine theres not much going on there

+Builder BB Agreed. filmed this pretty fast though and missed a few shots. Nothing to see behind it though. Just filled with water. :)
Question: could you put two of these on separate ends of the aquarium, using the pumps, have one act as the intake to an underneath trickle down sump and the other end as the output? Basically a mega filter.
I have a 24 gal. tank(60x40x40cm), should I use air pump or power head for filtration?
im quite know to the whole thing, When do you use sumps? or why would i consider using a sump for my tanks? and whats the tank size requirement for using sumps?
Would you make holes below the substrate, or is that something to be taken into account when drilling the holes?
Good idea. I have a 20 long in storage. When I'm ready to set it up I may do this to it.
question the filter phone that you use in this video I am looking for a sheet of it that's about 9 by 15 for my tank I can only find it in white at the hobby stores do you know somewhere where I can find it in Black at that size
Hi Joey and thanx for the video. Concerning flow rates, I am going to be requiring a 1200 L/hr pump however I need to shift the water up from my sump to my highest tank which is 6 foot in height. (My other tank is only 3 foot high) Do I need to consider this when buying a pump?. Thanx alot. PJ
Damn great type of filter man
Must say I enjoy your DIY and have done quit a few of them. I am setting up a 160 gallon tank (keeping Koi's) planning on putting 2 on each end of the tank your corner Super Charge corner sponge filter, but also wanted to add in the center your overflow project that will go to a sump and return via pump. Question, is the position of the overflow best in the center since I'm planning the sponge filters. thanks for your advice.
been watching your videos and getting great ideas. i have a 55 gallon tank i want to do glow fish in. i have the filter heater and gravel but was wondering if i could do a lightly planted aquarium to off set the bio load. is that possible and if so what type of plants could i use and what type of substrate do you recommend? also using the diy led light project you built once i order the lights. any help would be appreciated since i'm new to this hobby.
joe i have a custom sump filter it has 2 taps one on the input and one for the output from the pump but i cant seam to get the waterflows matched for the flow in and flow return ?

Nice !

+RyansAquarium Glad you think so ryan
Great video! Is it an issue that shrimp, dirt and small fish will enter the filter through the holes when removing the sponge for cleaning?
Two questions where do you get the sponge from? and will this be fine for saltwater
Really new and only just thinking about stuff but would it be feasible to do this almost like an internal canister set up in that there would be holes on the bottom for intake, a sponge on the bottom inside followed by bio media? I was thinking of a 10 gallon tank. Thanks!
For my 125g, can I do both corners and center? Then run my canaister filter intake hose through each, with the outtake hidden behind?
Hi, could I attach some mosses to the bucket to create a moss wall and to make it look good without it affecting the filtration?
is it possible to see a video of this type of filter in use and how well it does work in a stocked tank
Would this be good to use with a fragging tank with a few small fish? Also would a protein skimmer be a good addition behind it? I am just getting into saltwater, and want to make sure anything I keep stays healthy and happy.
Hey Joey! Its great learning from your videos, but 1 thing that I'm buzzed about is how do you start the cycle from the tank to the sump? I would prefer an automatic way rather than sucking on 1 side of the pipe. Also explain the manual ways to do it while your at it. :) Cheers!
would this work good for a planted shrimp tank ?
Hey Joey, great video and making the change to my 120 gallon as we speak. One question that I hope you or someone on here can answer is when you say rinse the filter in some tank water, are you saying back into the original tank or in another tank, maybe a spare. Thanks Bryan
Hey joey! In theory, could you use the sponge and bucket to hide the intake of a canister filter, so there is no need for floss inside of the actual filter?
@thekingofdiy

+imChanse Yup!
Would the use of slits be better in ensuring a good flow rate through the sponge and a lower chance of the sponge clogging...?
hiiii joey... i see this video it is amezing... i hav a doubt... Instead of buket can i use 6 inch pvc pipe... and cut according to tank corner?
I did a filtration like this one here. How long I leave them there before I do cleaning of the filter. I got shrimp too. 3 ft tank. Please.
REALLY new to this but wondering what kind of pump would I use for a 10 gal tank? Thanks!
amazing
good idea
That's awesome video, but I've got a question. Don't you think while maintenance the sponge grate amount of debris go back to the tank?
thank you Joey
Silicon, are we doing the correct thing by using our finger to make a concave shape? Should we make a simple tool to create a triangle with no possibility of a lip forming allowing water into the seal? Experiment with this idea. Came from looking for sealing bathroom areas.
do you know how to build a terrarium sump or in tank filter ,,, I have a medium florida softshell turtle and would like to make a filter for him/her in a 50gl tank
great videos Joey. How about making a diy vintage supreme superking filter by Danner. This I would pay to see. Thanks.
nice video! I'm also the filter freak guy :p I set up tanks just to try out new kinds of filtration ;)
I've got a 30gallon rimless tank I'm thinking of converting to a reef tank. I think this would be great to hide pump and heater and get some waterflow out of it as well. Probably be able to hide it behind some rocks and corals too.
Hey Joe... Where is the best place to get acrylic to build a fish tank???
